Student Guidebook

1. Introduction Congratulations on being selected to take part in Israel Summer Internship, hosted by SHE’ARIM and organized by JInternship Summer’15 Session in Jerusalem! This unique and innovative program is a hybrid of Jewish learning and professional development. It embodies the Jewish ideal of placing importance on both Torah learning and Jewish values in order to succeed in the marketplace. In the two month program, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about Judaism from some of the world’s top Jewish educators at SHE’ARIM as well as to work alongside successful professionals in your industry of interest.

We hope you will keep in mind that your internship has been secured through much effort, networking and administrative work. The opportunity is a privilege; only around 15% of applicants are awarded internships in the JInternship program. You were selected because of the high recommendations you received from your campus rabbi/other references as well as the talents and potential that was apparent from your resume and your interviews. Based on this, we have great confidence that you will live up to the high expectations we and your host-company have for you.

This Guidebook will introduce you to this carefully designed and powerful program; we are confident that the experience will help you reach new heights personally and professionally.

2. Your Professional Internship Since most students will work for different host companies, it is not in the scope of this Guidebook to discuss specific requirements for time spent at your professional internship. In general, you should discuss the requirements for your internship with your supervisor and our Internship Coordinators, Bashi Rosen and Yisroel Choleva. Upon arrival in Israel, they will supply you with a packet that includes information including the contact information of your supervisor, directions to your internship, bus routes, proper attire, an overview of the work culture in Israel, etc. Make sure you understand clearly what their expectations are for you. It is equally important that you make clear to them what you hope to accomplish during the internship.

If you have any problems with your internship, you should immediately be in touch with Bashi or Yisroel. It is their job to make sure that things go smoothly. You can also contact Jeff Surowitz (the Director of jInternship), or the madrichot (student guides) for assistance. The entire team is committed to making the entire experience a success. © www.jinternship.com, 2015 Issue Date: March 11, 2015 Author: Mrs. Miriam Shaul & Jeff Surowitz 3 Hosted by SHE’ARIM Summer 2015

Upon arrival in Israel, your Madricha will help you secure a Rav Kav card for public transportation to travel to/from work. Bashi will also prepare a map to help you locate your internship and transportation instructions for you upon arrival in Israel.

3. College Credits

The JInternship program is not currently accredited for college credits. However, many universities will offer credits for summer internships done through non-accredited programs so long as the internship is supervised. Several participants have done this in the past. The JInternship team is happy to work together with your host-company’s supervisor to assist you in receiving college credits for your experience. Please tell Bashi or Jeff Surowitz before the program starts if you are interested in this arrangement. More importantly, make sure you contact the appropriate department at your university and that you understand all the requirements you will need to fulfill in order to receive college credits. Students can request a transcript from She’arim for $25. It is up to the student’s university whether they will recognize the credits She’arim gives.

4. Travel Information Students are advised to arrive for international flights three hours prior to departure. Airlines overbook and late arrivals cannot always depend on prior reservations.

Please check, ASAP, that your travel documents are accessible and have not expired. New regulations require that all passports are valid for at least six months after your travel dates. Please make sure that your passport is updated.

In addition, please be advised that students, for whom JInternship has booked flights, will be responsible for any costs associated with late arrival at the airport departure terminal, or failure to arrive with proper travel documents, resulting in a missed flight.

You are responsible for arranging your own airfare to/from Israel. Please email us your itinerary when it is finalized.

6.2. A message from She’arim Staff: Dear Student,

Welcome to She’arim! Learning Torah can be a transformational experience, in so many different ways. The Torah gives us clear direction on how to live our lives, to become a better person and to create a relationship with the Master of the Universe.

Learning from the wisdom of the ages will provide you with much food for thought, change and transformation. As you are going through this transition, we offer you a relationship with a mentor on staff, to guide you on a personal level.

Each of our female teachers and staff members are available to meet with you individually on a regular basis. You can speak to her about your religious growth, changes you would like to make in yourself, your family situation, interpersonal relationships and philosophical questions you might have. When you start dating, you can ask your mentor to guide you through that process.

If there are bigger issues you wish to resolve that require a more therapeutic relationship, your mentor will be happy to make a referral, and if you wish, she will call the therapist to introduce you and make that transition easier.

While we would be happy to assign you a mentor, we have generally found that students appreciate and gravitate towards a particular person on staff. Feel free to make an appointment with any Rebbetzin or administrative staff member that you would enjoy speaking to. If you are too shy to ask for an appointment yourself, Mrs. Freishtat, Rebbetzin Kaganoff or Rebbetzin Pavlov would be happy to set it up for you.

Your mentor will respect your privacy and take your lead in terms of how often you want to meet- if you want ongoing mentoring time, please feel comfortable to approach your mentor, and schedule regular mentoring sessions .Alternatively, you can speak to her as the need arises.

Another source of wisdom and advice in the school is Rebbetzin Pavlov. She loves to meet with students and to develop a relationship with them. You can make an appointment with her through Mrs. Migdal in the office.

Rabbi Yoselevitz, Rabbi Cohen, and Rabbi Chananya Pavlov, our halacha teachers are also happy to answer any halachic questions that come up. Rabbi Yoselevitz is available daily at 2 p.m. to answer questions. The other Rabbis are available by appointment.

For longterm students only, Rebbetzin Raff will be happy to guide and assist you through

the traditional dating process.

We hope that you will avail yourself of all the possibilities for a personal relationship with staff members. These relationships can be a fruitful part of your development while you are at She’arim - and even after you leave!

The She’arim Staff

Make sure your guests are considerate of your apartment mates, it is their home.

Whenever the door is locked and people are inside the dorm, a key must be left in the lock (partly out) as a precaution in case of fire. Unfortunately there have been robberies in Har Nof. Keep your doors locked at all times. Do not open to strangers! The last person in bed at night should check that the door has been locked and turn off all lights.

Shabbat candles must be lit in kitchen or living room on a metal or thick plastic plate.

Buy only the approved Hechsherim (Kashrut certification) located in your orientation packet.

Bathroom After having a bath/shower, please clean out the tub and remove all hair and dirt, and then clear the drain hole of all hair.

Especially in the morning, everyone needs to use the bathroom so please be as brief as possible.

If there is a bath mat in the bathroom, please ensure that you return it to the side of the bath after use so that people will not walk on it.

In general please clean up after yourself and leave the bathroom in a state that you would like to find it.

The solar heating system is good for 2 showers in the evening in the summer. Please do not leave the boiler on overnight or when you leave for classes in the morning. More than that, you will need to turn on the boiler. The electric boiler must be turned off after use. Leaving the boiler on for more than a few hours is dangerous and wasteful.

This is the area where most people pray - it is appropriate that it be kept clean and tidy. © www.jinternship.com, 2015 Issue Date: March 11, 2015 Author: Mrs. Miriam Shaul & Jeff Surowitz 10 Hosted by SHE’ARIM Summer 2015
