He has had a prolific career spanning four decades, during which he has acted in more than 300 films. In addition to Malayalam, he has also appeared in other regional Indian films. Mohanlal made his acting debut as a teenager in the Malayalam film Thiranottam in 1978, but the film was delayed in its release for 25 years due to censorship issues. His screen debut was in the 1980 romance film Manjil Virinja Pookkal, in which he played the villain.[3] In the following years, he played antagonistic characters in several films and gradually rose to supporting roles. Mohanlal has received five National Film Awards—two Best Actor, a Special Jury Mention and a Special Jury Award for acting, and an award for Best Feature Film (as producer), also nine Kerala State Film Awards, Filmfare Awards South and numerous other accolades. In 2001, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour, for his contribution to Indian cinema.[6] In 2009, he became the first and only actor to be awarded the honorary rank of Lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army of India. Once there lived twelve weavers in a colony. One day they started a long journey. On the way they crossed a river in a boat. They counted themselves to find out whether ball of them had got down from the boat. They found that they were now only eleven in number. They were filled with horror and pain by the thought of the missing one. All the weavers counted and found that one was missing. Each one omitted himself and counted all others. So,the numbers stopped at eleven. Again and again the repeated the same thing. Soon there came a passes by. He promised that he would produce all of them the agreed and the passes by started to count them one by one giving each one a blow with his shoes he counted twelve and gave them twelve blows. All the twelve weavers now realised their folly

One beautiful spring morning, a merchant loaded his donkey with the bags of salt to go to the market in order to sell them. The merchant and his donkey were walking along together. They had not walked far when they reached a river on the road. Unfortunately, the donkey slipped and fell into the river and noticed that bags of salt loaded on his back became lighter. There was nothing the merchant could do, except return home where he loaded his donkey with more bags of salt. As they reached the slippery river bank, now deliberately, the donkey fell into the river and wasted all the bags of salt on its back again. The merchant quickly discovered the donkey's trick. He then returned home again but re-loaded his donkey with the bags of sponges. The foolish, tricky donkey again set on its way. On reaching the river he again fell into the water. But instead of the load becoming lighter, it became heavier.
