EADERSHIP L JVBL Mission Statement The mission of the JVBL is to promote ethical and moral leadership and behavior by serving as a forum for ideas and the sharing of “best practices.” It serves as a resource for business and institutional leaders, educators, and students concerned about values- based leadership. The JVBL defines values-based leadership to include topics involving ethics in leadership, moral considerations in business decision-making, stewardship of our natural environment, and spirituality as a source of motivation. The JVBL strives to publish articles that are intellectually rigorous yet of practical use to leaders, teachers, and entrepreneurs. In this way, the JVBL serves as a high quality, international journal focused on converging the practical, theoretical, and applicable ideas and experiences of scholars and practitioners. The JVBL provides leaders with a tool of ongoing self-critique and development, teachers with a resource of pedagogical support in instructing values-based leadership to their students, and entrepreneurs with examples of conscientious decision- making to be emulated within their own business environs. Submission Guidelines for the JVBL The JVBL invites you to submit manuscripts for review and possible publication. The JVBL is dedicated to supporting people who seek to create more ethically- and socially- responsive organizations through leadership and education. The Journal publishes articles that provide knowledge that is intellectually well-developed and useful in practice. The JVBL is a peer-reviewed journal available in both electronic and print fora (fully digital with print-on-demand options). The readership includes business leaders, government representatives, academics, and students interested in the study and analysis of critical issues affecting the practice of values-based leadership. The JVBL is dedicated to publishing articles related to: 1. Leading with integrity, credibility, and morality; 2. Creating ethical, values-based organizations; 3. Balancing the concerns of stakeholders, consumers, labor and management, and the environment; and 4. Teaching students how to understand their personal core values and how such values impact organizational performance. JOURNAL OF VALUES-BASED LEADERSHIP 1 In addition to articles that bridge theory and practice, the JVBL is interested in book reviews, case studies, personal experience articles, and pedagogical papers. If you have a manuscript idea that addresses facets of principled or values-based leadership, but you are uncertain as to its propriety to the mission of the JVBL, please contact its editor. While manuscript length is not a major consideration in electronic publication, we encourage EADERSHIP L contributions of less than 20 pages of double-spaced narrative. As the JVBL is in electronic format, we especially encourage the submission of manuscripts which utilize visual text. Manuscripts will be acknowledged immediately upon receipt. All efforts will be made to complete the review process within 4-6 weeks. By submitting a paper for review for possible publication in the JVBL, the author(s) acknowledge that the work has not been offered to any other publication and additionally warrant that the work is original and does not infringe upon another’s copyright. If the submitted work is accepted for publication and copyright infringement and/or plagiarism is successfully alleged with respect to that particular work, the submitting author agrees to hold the JVBL harmless and indemnified against any resulting claims associated therewith and further commits to undertaking all appropriate corrective actions necessary to remedy this substantiated claim(s) of infringement/plagiarism. All submissions, including appendices, should be transmitted as a Word.doc attachment to either [email protected] (preferred) or [email protected]. The submitting author shall provide contact information and indicate whether there are co-authors to be listed (specifying which one will be the primary contact). All material accepted for publication shall become the property of the JVBL. Review Process The JVBL seeks work that is clearly written and relevant to the Journal’s central theme, yet imbued with analytical and intellectual excellence. In this respect, the editorial review board shall consist of both leading scholars and respected high-level business leaders. All manuscripts undergo a two-stage review process: 1) The editor and/or his or her representative will conduct a cursory review to determine if the manuscript is appropriate for inclusion in the JVBL by examining the relevance of the topic and its appeal to the Journal’s target readership. The editor may: a) reject the manuscript outright, b) request submission of a revised manuscript which will then be subject to a comprehensive in-house review, or c) forward the manuscript for review

    American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Animal Welfare Institute • Farm Sanctuary • Food Animal Concerns Trust Humane Farming Association • Humane Society of the United States Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association October 21, 2009 The Honorable Louise McIntosh Slaughter U.S. House of Representatives 2469 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, D.C. 20515 Dear Representative Slaughter: We, the undersigned animal protection organizations representing more than 11 million supporters nationwide, are writing to voice our strong support for H.R. 1549/S. 619, the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA), introduced by Representative Louise Slaughter and Senators Edward Kennedy and Olympia Snowe. Profligate use by industrial agriculture of antibiotics for non-therapeutic purposes – to keep animals from getting sick in overcrowded, stressful, often unsanitary conditions on factory farms and feedlots, and to artificially speed their growth – threatens to ruin the effectiveness of these wonder drugs for treating sick people and sick animals. An estimated 70% of all antimicrobials used in this country are squandered for non-therapeutic purposes. Most pigs, chickens, and turkeys raised for food in the U.S. are fed low doses of antibiotics virtually every day of their lives, and most beef cattle receive these drugs from the day they arrive in the feedlot until just before slaughter. This routine feeding of antibiotics to billions of animals who are not sick is tailor-made to hasten the development of resistant bacteria affecting both animals and people. Just as in human medicine, we must do all we can to minimize or eliminate unnecessary use of antibiotics in animal agriculture in order to preserve the effectiveness of these precious drugs.

Abstract For the first time in India’s general elections of 2014, social media was used extensively by certain political parties and candidates. It was no different in Karnataka. Social media provided an alternative forum for parties and candidates to reach out voters. Social media has turned into additional vote base for political parties and candidates points out this study. The two national parties and one regional party made efforts to make use of the Internet based tools, though their efforts, interest and investments in terms of money were not equal. However, the social media tools used by them were more or less the same. The two national parties – the Indian National Congress (INC) commonly referred as the Congress party, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – were way ahead of other national parties when it comes to using social media.

The following is a tran- script of their conversation with Gene Baur, co-founder of Farm Sanctuary. Robert Moore - Well, first of all, thanks for letting us be here, it’s an amazing place. Gene Baur - Well, thank you for being here. Rob and Gene Baur at Farm Sanctuary Thanks for being part of it. Farm Sanctuary is made up of people who care about animals and want to make the world a nicer place. So everybody who comes here can then go home and tell others about the animals they met and about the fact that they are individuals who have feelings and who want to live and don’t want to be abused as they are being abused on factory farms all over the world. So thanks for being here, absolutely. RM - And when did you make that connection, that first connection that animals did have feelings? GB - For me, when I was maybe about 10 years old I had a cat who I was very close to, his name was Tiger, so he was my first animal friend who I really bonded with. But from that time on, and back then too, I grew up in LA in the hills and there were coyotes and deer and skunks and squirrels and raccoons and there were all these animals around.

Hong Kong is an ideal place to host the three conferences of closely related themes: Data-Mining, Web Intelligence, and Intelligent Agent Technologies. Hong Kong has been one of the important international financial services and trading hubs, attributing to three key factors. First of all, the fundamental economic principle of Hong Kong is to harness growth opportunities. Hundreds of thousands of small and medium enterprises serve as individual autonomous agents that cooperate, compete, and collectively they flourish as one economic system. Second, the abundance of data as well as many government and financial institutions’ efforts to data-mine and, in turn, generate useful knowledge, is translated into actionable business opportunities and marketing initiatives. Third, the electronic connectivity has served Hong Kong as the infrastructure backbone, and the Web intelligence technologies provide innovative ways of solving problems and developing and deploying new applications on top of such an infrastructure. As the prominent Milton Friedman once put “Hong Kong is a genuine example of ‘free-market’ economy.” We believe the models of such an efficient, market economy may some day shed new lights on the development of novel computing paradigms and technologies. We hope these joint conferences will provide a forum for researchers and students in the areas of data-mining, Web intelligence, and agent technologies to exchange their latest research ideas and results and to inspire future breakthroughs.

Being in the right place with the right product at the dawn of the personal computer era certainly had a lot to do with it. But so do some very smart approaches to work and life that all of us can follow. The personal finance site GOBankingRates recently published a list of 10 habits and experiences that make Gates so successful and helped him build his fortune. Here are my favorites. How many of them do you do? 1. He's always learning. Gates is famous for being a Harvard dropout, but the only reason he dropped out is that he and Paul Allen saw a window of opportunity to start their own software company. In fact, Gates loves learning and often sat in on classes he wasn't signed up for. That's something he had in common with Steve Jobs, who stuck around after dropping out of Reed College, sleeping on floors, so that he could take classes that interested him. 2. He reads everything. "Just about every kind of book interested him -- encyclopedias, science fiction, you name it," Gates's father said in an interview. Although his parents were thrilled that their son was such a bookworm, they had to establish a no-reading-at-the-dinner-table rule.

    Ip Man' martial arts superstar Yen joins polio campaign 21 August 2013 | News | By BioSpectrum Bureau Singapore: Internationally-renowned Hong Kong action star Mr Donnie Yen has joined the growing roster of public figures and celebrities to participate in Rotary's 'This Close' public awareness campaign for polio eradication. Mr Yen, an Asian superstar who gained world fame with Ip Man, Wu Xia and many other classics, will help Rotary achieve its goal of a polio-free world by raising his thumb and forefinger in the 'this close' gesture in the ad with the tagline "we're this close to ending polio". Mr Yen said, "I decided to become a Rotary ambassador for polio eradication because polio kills or paralyzes young children and Rotary is committed to ending this terrible disease worldwide. I also learned that the world has never been so close to eradication of polio since the mid 80's thanks to the vigorous efforts of Rotary International and its partners." Rotary club has partnered with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in the campaign for polio eradication. The Gates Foundation will match two-to-one, up to $35 million per year for every dollar that Rotary commits, in order to reduce the funding shortfall for polio eradication through 2018. It will help provide world's governments with the $5.5 billion needed to finish the job and end polio forever. The Rotary awareness campaign also features public figures and celebrities including Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, action movie star Jackie Chan, boxing great Manny Pacquiao, Korean pop star Psy, golf legend Jack Nicklaus, conservationist Jane Goodall, premier violinist Itzhak Perlman, Grammy Award winners AR Rahman, Angelique Kidjo and Ziggy Marley, and peace advocate Queen Noor of Jordan..
