Let Editorialthe game commence!

In April, European football experienced one of the administrative highlights of its year in Limassol on the island of Cyprus: the XXVIII Ordinary UEFA Congress, which was the perfect occasion to celebrate the organisation’s Golden Jubilee. For the delegates and guests it was an opportunity to pay tribute to some deserving servants of football, as well as to remember the pioneers and visionaries who built UEFA, and their successors, who have made it the dynamic and efficient organisation that it is today. The representatives of the national associations also had the possibility to relive – through archive pictures and commentaries from some of the great figures of European football – the evolution of the game and some of the moments in the history of the European competitions that remain firmly etched in the memory, such as the incredible ending to the 1999 UEFA Champions League final in between Manchester United and Bayern Munich and, further back, in 1960, the fantastic victory of Real Madrid over Eintracht Frankfurt in , in front of a crowd. To a large extent, it was in order for European football to be able to experience top-level competitions in both the club and the national team sectors that the pioneers founded UEFA in 1954. Thanks to the competi- tion calendar, which means that this Golden Jubilee year coincides with a European Championship final round, we will be able to pay the most magnificent of tributes to UEFA’s founders: a European Championship final round beyond their wildest dreams, with 16 finalists, marvellous stadiums and excited crowds whose passion is heating up even before the tournament has kicked off. So after the commemorative ceremonies, it’s time for the action. Vive o 2004!
