Chris Hatten

Chris has approximately 15 years of public accounting experience. His experience includes audit and financial consulting for publicly owned and privately held businesses. David Lowe, Ph.D. CEO, Aeglea BioTherapeutics

David G. Lowe PhD has been a research scientist managing and leading drug discovery programs, a venture capitalist investing in emerging and mid stage life science companies, and most recently a biotechnology entrepreneur. He joined in 1985 as post-doctoral fellow and ultimately became a Senior Scientist in Molecular Biology and later Director of Cardiovascular Research. At Genentech, David led drug discovery activities in biologics and small molecule therapeutics, and was a member of the therapeutic area team responsible for strategic planning and product portfolio management. He was responsible for drug discovery efforts that resulted in eight drugs that moved into clinical trials, including the successful cancer therapy Avastin®. David M. Schubert CEO, Accelerator Corporation

David M. Schubert is Chief Operating Officer of Accelerator Corporation, a biotechnology focused venture capital backed investment vehicle located in New York City and Seattle, Washington.

From May of 2012- August of 2014, Mr. Schubert served as Executive Director of the Houston Area Translational Research Consortium (HATRC) at Rice University, a biotechnology-based non-for-profit organization that focused on filling the gap between R&D investment and translation of discovery to the clinic in the form of marketable products to treat diseases. Erin Ator Thomson

Erin's principal areas of practice are strategic intellectual property counseling, technology transactions (including patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret licensing), and intellectual property litigation, primarily in the areas of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, research tools, medical devices, consumer products, and software. She has extensive experience assisting clients in evaluating, structuring, and negotiating intellectual property and technology transactions, and conducting due diligence associated with such transactions. LauraLee Hughes, MBIOT

LauraLee Hughes serves as Executive Director for the Office of Technology Translation at the Texas A&M Health Science Center and currently leads efforts related technology commercialization, product development, entrepreneurship and innovation. Previously, LauraLee worked at the Texas A&M University System Office of Strategic Initiatives as a key technical and project manager for multiple research and development initiatives. Her major projects and responsibilities included the National Center for Therapeutics Manufacturing, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Blue Angel Program, and most recently, the Texas A&M Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing. Jim Graham

Jim Graham is a biotechnology consultant based in Austin, Texas. Jim has over fifteen years of experience in life sciences finance, commercialization and entrepreneurship. He started his career in the West Coast office of Alex.Brown, the investment banking division of Deutsche Bank. Jim worked at Idec before moving to the Boston Office of McKinsey & Co. to join their Pharmaceutical and Medical Products practice. Kala Marathi is the Executive Director of Innovation at the University of Houston's CT Bauer College of Business. In her role at UH, Kala is launching the Robinson Venture Fund and establishing other entrepreneurial-focused initiatives. Kala also served as Managing Director of the Houston Angel Network for 9 years. During this time, she has facilitated over $30M in investments in 85 early stage technology deals. She also helped create the Texas HALO Fund, the largest angel-focused sidecar fund in Texas. Kala has more than 15 years of operating and financial experience. Kala was formerly with Reliant Energy where she was a founding member of the corporate venture group, Reliant Energy Net Ventures. At Reliant, she led several smart grid pilots and technology initiatives, and launched a subsidiary called Texas Star Energy. She also has extensive experience in strategy and corporate finance with such firms as the Continental Airlines and Chase. Kala is a Director in the Texas Lyceum. She has also served on the Board of Directors of Texchange and the National Association of Women MBAs (Houston Chapter), as well as on the Advisory Board of the National Angel Education Foundation. Kala has B.A. in Japanese and Economics from Wellesley College, and an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.

Paul Lammers, M.D., M.Sc., joined Mirna Therapeutics in November 2009 as its President, CEO, and Director of the Board. Since joining the company, Paul has led the team in successfully raising more than 150 million dollars for the company, both from leading traditional and corporate venture firms, Federal and State grant programs, including the Texas Emerging Technology Fund (ETF) and the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT), and by recently bringing the company public (NASDAQ: MIRN). Prior to joining Mirna Therapeutics, Dr. Lammers served as President of Repros Therapeutics in The Woodlands, Texas, after having served for 6 years as the Chief Medical Officer for EMD Serono Inc., a Division of German pharmaceutical company, Merck KgA. He began his career with Dutch pharmaceutical company, Organon, spending 8 years in the commercial and clinical operations in Europe and the US. He also served 4 years as Senior Vice President of clinical and regulatory affairs at Zonagen in The Woodlands, TX. Dr. Lammers obtained his Medical and Masters of Science degrees from Radboud University in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, and moved with his family to the US in 1992.

Larry Hope

Larry Hope joined MD Anderson Cancer Center's licensing office in January 2014 and more recently moved to the Strategic Industry Ventures group. His main role is to help "connect the dots" between industry needs and MD Anderson's capabilities. He focuses primarily on start-ups and creative collaborations. Previously, he was with CAP Resources, a boutique consulting firm in the energy and technology sectors and Baylor College of Medicine where he was responsible for all patenting and commercialization activities for the BCM departments of Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatrics, Biochemistry and Physical Medicine. Prior to Baylor, he held marketing / business development positions at several Houston-area biotechnology companies, the most recent being LifeCell Corporation. He has been a guest lecturer and panelist for a variety of technology and entrepreneurship-oriented programs and takes on advising roles as time permits. Larry holds a B.S. in Microbiology from Texas A&M University and an M.B.A. in Finance & Entrepreneurship from Rice University.

Mellie Price Managing Director, Capital Factory

Mellie Price, a 25 year Austinite, is the Executive Director of Technology Innovation at the Dell Medical School. She is an experienced investor, executive, fund manager and eight- time entrepreneur with a range of business experience from small private sector to a large publicly traded organization. She has created and managed both organic and explosive growth scenarios for variety of organizations.

Mellie is a founding mentor and Managing Director of Capital Factory as well as a General Partner to its investment fund. She is the co-founder of SoftMatch, which connects enterprises interested in innovation to the highly fragmented global startup ecosystem. Ms. Price was also the Founder & CEO of Austin’s own Front Gate Solutions and Front Gate Tickets, one of the largest privately held ticketing companies in the US/Canada from 2002 to 2015 when it was sold to Live Nation.

Ms. Price is an active member of the Texas entrepreneurship community and a winner of the prestigious Austin Business Journal’s 2015 Profiles in Power Award as well as the 2014 Tech Titan Award. She is a proud member of the Board of Directors for Leadership Austin and the Sustainable Food Center. She is also a founding Advisor to Texas Competes and currently serves on the Social Innovation Council and the Technology Advisory Committee for Austin Mayor Steve Adler.

Matt Cohen

Matt joined Osage University Partners in 2013 where he focuses on Life Science investments. He is a board observer at Spero Therapeutics, Faraday Pharma, and PMV Pharma. Prior to joining Osage, Matt was a strategy consultant with L.E.K. Consulting serving clients in biopharma, diagnostics, research tools, healthcare, and private equity. Engagements included strategy development, market assessment, commercialization support, portfolio development, acquisition target identification, and diligence / transaction support. As a Ph.D. student at the University of Pennsylvania, Matt conducted research on the antibody response to a novel protein-based poxvirus vaccine and advised several startups while working with the Penn Biotech Group.

Matt holds a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Pennsylvania, and a B.S. in Microbiology from the Pennsylvania State University.

Michael Lowe CEO, OrthoAccel Technologies

Most recently, Mr. Lowe spent seven years at Philips Oral Healthcare (Royal Philips Electronics) where he worked in a variety of roles including global product management and brand management for Sonicare (Class I medical device, $350 million annual revenue). His experience comprises a range of marketing-related disciplines including dental professional sales management, sales training, promotion and advertising, market research, pricing strategy, and channel strategy development. While at Philips, he was nominated into the prestigious High Potential global management program, was listed as a co-inventor on a business application patent related to CRM, and developed a training program, Evidence-Based Dentistry, which won a regional MEDIC process improvement award for increased dental sales. He initially began working on the Sonicare business with Optiva, Inc. (1999 Inc. magazine Fastest Growing Privately Held Company award), joining Philips through the strategic acquisition process in 2000.

Mike Kuo

Mike Kuo is a Client Service Partner at Slalom Consulting, a provider of strategy, operations, change management and technology-enabled business transformation services. He leads key accounts and provides strategic leadership and direction for the healthcare practice, and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).

Mike has extensive leadership experience in healthcare, previously serving as the Vice President of Commercial Operations at Cardinal Health, responsible for all support operations related to marketing, sales and product development in a $12B+ healthcare solutions and pharmaceutical supply chain enterprise. Prior to his tenure at Cardinal Health, Mike spent ten years at Pfizer in roles of increasing responsibility, with Director- level roles in Corporate Strategy, Global Business Analytics & Insights, Commercial Operations and Operational Excellence.

Mike spent five years at Deloitte, where he was part of the strategy and operations practice, focused in the Life Sciences industry. He holds an undergraduate degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Columbia Business School.

After spending nearly a decade in academic research, Erin finally came to her senses and cut loose to join TMCx. Her background in biomedical science and genetics serves her well in the Innovation Institute—she tackles TMCx operational needs with the accuracy and precision of a multiplexed PCR protocol. She facilitates communications between TMCx companies and TMC member institutions and is determined to cultivate businesses with the greatest impact for patients and health care delivery in Houston.

In her free time Erin enjoys nurturing her own genetic experiment (her toddler Aveda), playing the ukulele, and reminiscing about her time wrangling cattle for her graduate research in bovine immunogenetics. Jacob Setterbo, Ph.D. Director of Grants, HIREtech

Dr. Jacob Setterbo is Director of Grants at HIREtech, where he helps life science companies obtain non-dilutive funding. Jacob focuses on small business grants (SBIR/STTRs) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He has provided consultation and technical writing for various therapeutic areas across the spectrum of NIH’s interests, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, digital health, and health care delivery. Jacob assists with experimental design and commercialization components of each project. Jacob regularly vets early-stage companies with respect to innovation and commercial potential to determine their applicability for grants. As part of this process, Jacob evaluates business plans, market analyses, existing literature, patent portfolios, and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) meeting minutes. Jacob also assists with R&D Tax Credits at HIREtech. Jacob serves as an Advisor for the Texas Medical Center Accelerator (TMCx) and as an Advisory Board Member for the Terry Foundation. Jacob also served as a reviewer for the Texas Emerging Technology Fund and as a due diligence team member for the Houston Angel Network. Jacob received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from University of California, Davis and his B.S. in Civil Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.

Cindy R. WalkerPeach, PhD

Dr. WalkerPeach joined the Austin Technology Incubator in early 2010 as lead advisor for healthcare-focused life sciences startups. She is responsible for critically evaluating new business ventures, managing a portfolio of bioscience startups and providing business mentoring to technology-focused entrepreneurs. She brings more than 20 years of experience in the biotechnology sector as a member of a number of startup teams, including Ambion Diagnostics and Asuragen. Her specialty areas include product development and technology assessment, business management/operations, corporate development and strategic product partnering, drug and companion diagnostic assay co- development, university and commercial collaborations, technology licensing and nucleic acid-based technologies. Dr. WalkerPeach completed a BS in Chemistry, PhD in Chemistry and Molecular Biology, focusing on understanding disease pathways and disease management strategies.

Srini Akkaraju, M.D., Ph.D. General Partner, Sofinnova Ventures

Srini has over 18 years of investment and operational experience in the Life Sciences sector. He joined Sofinnova in 2013 as a General Partner, and concentrates on biopharmaceutical investments. Srini’s board memberships have included Piramed (acquired by Roche), Eyetech Pharmaceuticals (EYET), Synageva BioPharma (GEVA), Seattle Genetics (SGEN), Intercept Pharmaceuticals, (ICPT), and Versartis.

Prior to joining Sofinnova, Srini was a Managing Director at New Leaf Venture Partners. Prior to NLVP, he was a co-founder and Managing Director at Panorama Capital. Before forming Panorama, he served as Partner of JP Morgan Partners. Prior to JP Morgan Partners, Srini held business and corporate development positions at Genentech.

Srini MD and PhD degrees in Immunology from Stanford University School of Medicine. He graduated with BA degrees in both Biochemistry and Computer Science from Rice University.

Stephen Curtis, Ph.D.

Stephen is responsible for sourcing, assessing, and leading bioscience investments for 2M Companies, the Dallas-based family office of Morton H. Meyerson. Steve also supports emerging companies in the 2M portfolio; he sits on the Boards of Partikula (mitochondria-targeting drug-delivery platform) and Therabracelet (wearable consumer/medical technology) and is an observer and interim manager for Odin Biotech (ophthalmology therapeutic). Prior to joining 2M, Steve ran the technology evaluation and in-licensing program at Reata Pharmaceuticals, a clinical-stage drug development company, leading cross-functional efforts to identify and acquire novel therapeutic programs across a variety of disease areas. Steve is a fellow in class 20 of the Kauffman Fellows Program, a competitive international fellowship program for high-potential innovation investors. He is also an advisor to the Health Wildcatters accelerator in Dallas and a member of the Oversight Committee for the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation’s Translational Partnership Program at University of Louisville.

Steve graduated summa cum laude from Cornell University, completing a dual BS degree in Molecular Biology and Applied Economics and Management, and earned his PhD in Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Harvard Medical School.

Tamsen Valoir, Ph.D.

Dr. Valoir focuses her practice on IP and FDA regulation in the life sciences, but she also has experience in copyright and trademark enforcement. Her work includes patent prosecution, infringement and patentability opinion work, licensing, due diligence, FDA patent term extensions and data exclusivities, as well as litigation related to copyright, trademark and patent infringement.

In addition to patent prosecution, Dr. Valoir’s practice has recently focused on IP and regulatory due diligence, clinical trial agreements, as well as various licensing agreements, including those to migrate IP to low tax jurisdictions. She has also done extensive work on freedom to operate (FTO) in several industries.

Dr. Valoir presented at Bio2009 on Global IP Due Diligence and Bio2010 on IP and Bankruptcy and has extensively published in the IP, tax, and regulatory areas.

Dr. Valoir has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Rice University and an LL.M. in Intellectual Property from the University of Houston.

Ann Tanabe CEO, BioHouston

Ann Tanabe was appointed CEO of BioHouston in October 2015 after serving four years as the company’s COO. Prior to joining BioHouston in 2011, Ann served as vice president of investor relations at Synthesis Energy Systems, a publicly traded alternative energy company from May 2008 to December 2010.

Prior to this position, Ann served as vice president of corporate communications and investor relations and investor relations director at Encysive Pharmaceuticals, a publicly traded biotechnology company from July 2003 to May 2008.

From October 2000 to July 2003, Ann served as investor relations manager and corporate communications coordinator to Texas Biotechnology, the predecessor company to Encysive Pharmaceuticals. Prior to 2000, Ann held a variety of positions at Rochem Separation Systems. Ann earned a BA degree from Loyola Marymount University.

Jeffrey Wade Executive VP, Corporate and Administrative Affairs , Lexicon Pharmaceuticals

Jeffrey L. Wade is executive vice president, corporate and administrative affairs and chief financial officer of Lexicon Pharmaceuticals, Inc., having previously served as the company’s general counsel and as senior vice president and chief financial officer. He has played an instrumental role in completing securities offerings for Lexicon totaling more than $1 billion; completing the acquisition of Coelacanth Corporation that established the basis for the company’s small molecule drug discovery efforts; and negotiating collaborations and licenses involving more than $775 million in committed funding to the company, including strategic alliances with Sanofi, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Genentech, Ipsen and Takeda, as well as a product financing collaboration with Symphony Capital. Before joining Lexicon, Mr. Wade was a partner with the law firm of Andrews & Kurth, where his practice consisted primarily of corporate finance and securities transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and partnerships and alliances. Mr. Wade received his B.A. (Plan II) and J.D. from The University of Texas.

William R. Buras

William brings over 29 years of diverse experience and demonstrated leadership in the biotechnology and healthcare industry to Texas. As Senior Director, William leads research development for Life Sciences Division of Tietronix. William serves as Chair of the Industrial Advisory Board for the National Science Foundation “Cyber-Operating Room” center of excellence and is the Principal Investigator for medical research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health, The Defense Health Program and NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Prior to these roles, William served a variety of technical and scientific leadership roles at DuPont, Eli Lilly and Cyberonics where he has managed programs of scientific research consisting of as many as 200+ individual clinical/pre-

clinical/engineering studies. In addition to 8 patented and licensed medical devices, William led and published results of the first controlled study demonstrating the clinical benefits of adding an atypical antipsychotic to SSRI’s for treating Resistant Depression.

Angela Shah

Angela Shah is the editor of Xconomy Texas. She has written about startups along a wide entrepreneurial spectrum, from Silicon Valley transplants to Austin partying in the '90s tech boom to 20-something women defying cultural norms as they seek to build vital IT infrastructure in a war-torn Afghanistan. As a foreign correspondent based in Dubai, her work appeared in The New York Times, TIME, Newsweek/Daily Beast and Forbes Asia.

Before moving overseas, Shah was a staff writer and columnist with The Dallas Morning News and the Austin American-Statesman. She has an MBA from Tulane University, a Bachelor's of Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin and is a 2007 Knight- Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan.

David Parkinson

Dr. Parkinson has served as a director of the Company since June 24, 2015 and has been employed full time as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company since January 7, 2016. He is responsible for the management of the Company, developing objectives, strategy and standards of performance, securing and leading a team of professionals and directing them to deliver the required performance. Most recently Dr. Parkinson has served as a venture partner at New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Inc., and following his assumption of these new Essa-related responsibilities he has moved to the role of venture advisor to NEA. From 2007 until 2012, Dr. Parkinson served as President and CEO of Nodality, a biotechnology company focused on the biological characterization of signaling pathways in patients with malignancy to enable more effective therapeutics development and clinical decision-making. Dr. Parkinson has previously led oncology clinical development activities at Novartis (1997-2003), Amgen (2003-2006) and Biogen Idec 2006-2007). He worked at the National Cancer Institute from 1990 to 1997, serving as Chief of the Investigational Drug Branch, and then as Acting Associate Director of the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP). Dr. Parkinson is a past Chairman of the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Biologics Advisory Committee, has also served on the FDA’s Science Board, and is a recipient of the FDA's Cody Medal. He has served on the National Cancer Policy Forum of the Institute of Medicine, as a board director for the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, and is a past co-chair of the Cancer Steering Committee of the NIH Foundation Biomarkers Consortium. He currently serves as a Board Director for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation and has served as Chairperson of the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) Finance and Audit Committee for the last 15 years. Dr. Parkinson was formerly a Director of Facet Biotech, Inc. and Ambit Biosciences, both public biopharma companies which were acquired by large pharma. He currently serves as Director on the Boards of Cerulean Pharma Inc., 3S Bio Inc. He has held academic positions both at Tufts and at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications.

John Demarco, JD

John Demarco is a United States patent attorney and partner in the IP Group of Haynes and Boone LLP in Houston. He focuses on patent and trademark counseling, licensing, litigation, and prosecution. He helps companies design around patents, defend against patent assertions, enforce/license intellectual property, resolve complex patent prosecution issues, and acquire and develop technology and intellectual property. John's technical experience includes: medical devices and imaging (fluorescence, MRI, CT, and OCT); pharmaceuticals; software; and digital reading, storage, display, printing and camera devices.

Mini Kapoor, PhD, JD

Mini is a scientist and a lawyer. Prior to her career in law, she was a faculty at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. Mini's research focus was development of genomics technologies for high-throughput patient sample profiling. Currently, Mini is a practicing lawyer at Haynes and Boone, LLP, and a registered attorney at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Her practice areas include intellectual property matters, including patents, trade secrets and trademarks. Mini's experience includes patent opinions, technology licensing, and litigation. She is also experienced in general commercial business matters and has represented large, mid-size and small entities in contract disputes as well as intellectual property matters.
