Authenticity of Standard Version of Dasam Granth: History and its Text in Literature* By: Jasbir Singh Mann M.D. Granths with title as Sri Dasam Granth/or Dasam Patshahi Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, also known as Standard Version of Dasam Granth has been seen since 1897 AD in Circulation in Title prints with fixed compositions/contents with and arrangement of contents in 1428 pages, which was published after correction of 32 Granths by a Sodhak committee 1896AD and in Print form since 1900AD. Review of Literature shows no such Granth with Title Sri Dasam Granth or Dasmi Patshahi Ka Granth (with fixed pattern of Compositions/contents and arrangement) was seen in Punjab or Delhi area Sikh institutions in 18th century. Indian sources, Persian sources & over 30 European sources were silent about this Granth during 18th Century. In Literature Title “Dasmi Patshahi Granth” was first time reported by Malcolm in 1810 AD (early 19th century). Then onwards in early 19th century, such Granths started appearing in Sikh institutions in Punjab, initially in hand written Birs and then in print form in 19th century. By 1895AD, over 32 versions, with variable patterns of compositions in hand written birs, including six printed versions were available in Punjab. Sodhak committee prepared final standard version in 1897 AD which has been extensively used in literature during 20th century (1900AD-2000AD). This Granth has always remained controversial among scholars and Sikh community and issues of authenticity of its compositions can be traced during Cunningham during Pre-Singhsabha /Singh Sabha period and from 1947AD onwards till 2013. -

All the texts under consideration date from before the third quarter of the eighteenth century and, therefore, both predate and inform the classical qissa tradition of the nineteenth century. The texts narrate three of the most commonly represented love stories in pre twentieth century Punjab, two of them versions of local folk legends and one an episode from the Quran. A total of six texts are considered in the thesis: Hafiz Barkhurdar's Mirza Sahiba, Siddlq Tail's Yusuf Zulatkha, and the versions of HTr by Ahmad, Muqbil and Varis Shah. -

One aim is to expose some of the fault lines in the historiography of premodern Hindi literature. One reason that Brajbhasha court literature has not attracted the kind of deep, sympathetic study it merits is because literary historians have been too quick to stamp the stigma of decadence on late precolonial traditions. The study of literature has been trapped in stale paradigms of Mughal decline that have long been discredited in other disciplines. JPS: 11:2 Schreffler: Vernacular Music and Dance of Punjab Vernacular Music and Dance of Punjab Gibb Stuart Schreffler U.C. Santa Barbara ______________________________________________________ The field of Punjabi music is marked by an interaction between Punjabi music as contemporary practice and Punjabi music as people imagine it. In order to understand the state of vernacular music in Punjab it is instructive to devise a classificatory schema consisting of a few objectively determined, yet liberally conceived, musical subtypes. Following such a framework, this paper will describe how Punjabi musical activity manifests within each category, as well as how it has changed over time. Special note is taken of how ideas held about Punjabi vernacular music have themselves affected the development of music to its present form. Through a review of existing scholarship on Punjabi music it will be possible to delineate areas of future research. ______________________________________________________ Music is one of many realms that distinguishes Punjab1 as a cultural area. Given its importance, music is a mode through which Punjabis display their identity. Vernacular music and dance of Punjab both embody regional characteristics of the Punjab and index change in its society over time. The stories about Punjabi identity that are narrated through music evoke images which Punjabis use to particularize their ethnicity both within the Punjab and in diasporic communities around the globe. However, interpretive notions such as "traditional" and "modern," with which audiences assess the quality and "correctness" of musical performances, tell us more about how they perceive their own identity as Punjabis than they tell us about the music's stylistic classification. -

The Two Bhai Sahibs: A Rejoinder to Professor Tejwant Gill”s Article Darshan S. Tatla1 Punjabi University, Patiala In “The two Bhai Sahibs: Vir Singh and Kahn Singh in comparative perspective” (JSPS 23:1&2), Tejwant Gill passes rather severe judgment on two Sikh intellectuals; in his view, the two writers’ vast array of writings were devoid of “originality” and their contributions were not “fundamental.” Leaving aside the meaning of “originality” and “fundamental,” this seems quite a taking down of two major Sikh personalities of the 20th century. It is an interesting assessment in so far as these two leading Sikh personalities of the colonial Punjab are brought together in the first place, especially as the second Bhai Sahib, Kahn Singh, has generally escaped the attention of literary critics since his contribution to literary genre is considerably smaller. Kahn Singh’s Magnus Opus is an encyclopedia of Punjabi language, while his main writings concern Sikh theology and exegesis. There is, of course, his much discussed Hum Hindu Nahin (We are not Hindus), a book that sets out a case for the Sikh community’s distinction from Hindu society. Social historians of Punjab have made extensive comments upon it as the first definitive statement of how the Sikhs started to demarcate themselves from the Hindu society during the colonial rule but it has generally not been treated as a literary text. Thus it is quite interesting that Gill brings these two Sikh intellectuals together, through his novel criterion, as a comparative exercise. Reading through the article, Gill brings together several kinds of tests and contestations to judge the worth of each Bhai sahib.
