It is also commonly referred to as train transport. In contrast to road transport, where vehicles merely run on a prepared surface, rail vehicles are also directionally guided by the tracks on which they run. Track usually consists of steel rails installed on sleepers/ties and ballast, on which the rolling stock, usually fitted with metal wheels, moves. However, other variations are also possible, such as slab track where the rails are fastened to a concrete foundation resting on a prepared subsurface. Rolling stock in railway transport systems generally has lower frictional resistance when compared with highway vehicles and the passenger and freight cars (carriages and wagons) can be coupled into longer trains. The operation is carried out by a railway company, providing transport between train stations or freight customer facilities. Power is provided by locomotives which either draw electrical power from a railway electrification system or produce their own power, usually by diesel engines. Most tracks are accompanied by a signalling system.

  • Includes a Day Trip to Montserrat Barcelona City Guide
BARCELONA GUIDE INCLUDES A DAY TRIP TO MONTSERRAT BARCELONA CITY GUIDE A compelling mixture of imposing Gothic and Art Nouveau style architecture, Spanish cuisine, sangria, sunshine, beaches and chilled vibe make Barcelona one of the greatest getaway cities at any time of year. Summers here can be hot and humid, while winters very pleasant compared to much of Europe. Money wise, Barcelona is still relatively affordable, however the main attractions such as the grand Casa Mila or a visit inside the Sagrada Familia, can set you back over €20 per person. BUGETING FOR There are so many things to see and do in Barcelona. Depending BARCELONA on your budget, you can spend an entire weekend doing fun things around the city. However, if you are on a tight budget, ATTRACTIONS select the attractions you definitely want to see and stick to those. For example, both Gaudi apartments, Casa Mila (La Pedrera) and Casa Batllo are extremely expensive to visit. So maybe choose just one of them to go inside and admire the other from the outside. From our own experience, Casa Batllo always has the longest queues. If you want to skip the line, you can purchase a ticket (plus FastPass) for €28.50 per person, otherwise it will cost you €23.50 for the regular line. This Gaudi masterpiece is a joy to look at from the outside so if you are short on cash, you can always appreciate the exterior from the street level for free. Casa Mila (La Pedrera) on the other hand, is an excellent choice for discovering the life and work of one of the greatest Catalan architects, Antoni Gaudi.

Transit Capacity and Quality of Service Manual—2nd Edition PART 8 GLOSSARY This part of the manual presents definitions for the various transit terms discussed and referenced in the manual. Other important terms related to transit planning and operations are included so that this glossary can serve as a readily accessible and easily updated resource for transit applications beyond the evaluation of transit capacity and quality of service. As a result, this glossary includes local definitions and local terminology, even when these may be inconsistent with formal usage in the manual. Many systems have their own specific, historically derived, terminology: a motorman and guard on one system can be an operator and conductor on another. Modal definitions can be confusing. What is clearly light rail by definition may be termed streetcar, semi-metro, or rapid transit in a specific city. It is recommended that in these cases local usage should prevail. • Finished Vehicle Logistics by Rail in Europe
Finished Vehicle Logistics by Rail in Europe Version 3 December 2017 This publication was prepared by Oleh Shchuryk, Research & Projects Manager, ECG – the Association of European Vehicle Logistics. Foreword The project to produce this book on ‘Finished Vehicle Logistics by Rail in Europe’ was initiated during the ECG Land Transport Working Group meeting in January 2014, Frankfurt am Main. Initially, it was suggested by the members of the group that Oleh Shchuryk prepares a short briefing paper about the current status quo of rail transport and FVLs by rail in Europe. It was to be a concise document explaining the complex nature of rail, its difficulties and challenges, main players, and their roles and responsibilities to be used by ECG’s members. However, it rapidly grew way beyond these simple objectives as you will see. The first draft of the project was presented at the following Land Transport WG meeting which took place in May 2014, Frankfurt am Main. It received further support from the group and in order to gain more knowledge on specific rail technical issues it was decided that ECG should organise site visits with rail technical experts of ECG member companies at their railway operations sites. These were held with DB Schenker Rail Automotive in Frankfurt am Main, BLG Automotive in Bremerhaven, ARS Altmann in Wolnzach, and STVA in Valenton and Paris. As a result of these collaborations, and continuous research on various rail issues, the document was extensively enlarged. The document consists of several parts, namely a historical section that covers railway development in Europe and specific EU countries; a technical section that discusses the different technical issues of the railway (gauges, electrification, controlling and signalling systems, etc.); a section on the liberalisation process in Europe; a section on the key rail players, and a section on logistics services provided by rail.

“Notes on the Working of a Rack Railway.” BY WILLIAX TIIEODORELCCY, M. Inst. C.E. ALTIIOUG~this subject might appear to be of but limited interest, it may be pointed out that during recent years the loads hauled on rack railways have been largely increased, while their mileage has been steadilyextended. In Chilealone during,1913 there were opened to traffic, in the Arica-La Paz Railway and the Southern Longitudinal Railway, 1,072 kilometres (666 miles) of line which would not have been practicable without the use of the rack; and as regards loads it was stated in 1911 that the maximum tractive power employed in Switzerland was 11,000 kilograms (24,244 lbs.), while the work now under consideration may be takenas demanding 50,000 lbs. Th‘e interesting Paper presented to The Institution recently by Mr.Brodie H. Henderson, M. Inst. C.E., on “The Transandine Railway,”deals chiefly withthe location and construction of the two railwaysforming theroute betweenArgentina and Chile. The following notes are intended to give further information as to the practical details of working on the Chilian Transandine Railway, the more severe of the two lines, which the Author, while assistant manager, had opportunities of observing and modifying. • 2015-09-01 Modernisierung Von Skitube EN
MEDIENMITTEILUNG Bussnang, 1.9.2015 Upgrade for Perisher Skitube Rail The Skitube Alpine Railway in the Australian Snowy Mountains is set for a major upgrade after almost 30 years of reliable service, transporting millions of people up to Perisher Ski Resort in the Kosciuszko National Park. The Swiss train company Stadler Rail, which is the world’s only provider of the rack and rail system employed by Skitube has just been awarded a two million dollar contract to upgrade the trains’ control systems. Skitube employs a Swiss - designed rack and rail system which uses a toothed cog pinion wheel engaging with a centrally located rack to drive and brake the trains safely up and down the steep mountain inclines. Perisher CEO Peter Brulisauer said after almost 30 years of operations replacement parts were becoming increasingly hard to find, so the decision had been made to upgrade and modernise Skitube. “Skitube has safely carried over four million passengers up to Perisher Valley and Blue Cow and remains the most efficient and practical way to allow people to experience the very best of Perisher,” said Mr Brulisauer. The modernisation program for Skitube, which is scheduled to be carried out during the off-season between October 2016 and April 2017, will ensure that the system continues to meet the highest of Swiss safety standards for rack railways. Upgraded braking The new train control system to be installed by Stadler includes upgraded braking, electronic control equipment and driver displays for controlling and monitoring train functions. Stadler will also carry out commissioning, safety and functionality tests together with Perisher’s rail specialists.
