E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. This paper investigates the butterfly fauna of the ‘Serra do Rola-Moça’ State Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil. We eval- uate i) the seasonal variation of species richness and composition; and ii) the variation in composition of the local butterfly assemblage among three sampling sites and between the dry and rainy seasons. Sampling was carried out monthly between November 2012 and October 2013, using entomological nets. After a total sampling effort of 504 net hours, 311 species were recorded. One of them is endangered in Brazil, and eight are probable new species. Furthermore, two species were new records for the region and eight considered endemic of the Cerrado domain. There was no significant difference in species richness between the dry and the rainy seasons, however the species composition varies significantly among sampling sites. Due to its special, heterogeneous environment, which is home to a rich butterfly fauna, its preservation is important for the conservation of the regional butterfly fauna. -

Bates’s classic writings (6, 7), reflecting observations during his lengthy stay on the Ama- zon, used these insects in a proposal of the phenomenonof mimicry and in support of Darwinian paradigms of adaptation and evolution. During the following thirty years, field biological studies of heliconians were relegated to second place behind heated arguments about "mimicry" in museum specimens; an important exception was the pioneering work of the brothers Fritz and WilhelmMiiller in southern Brazil (100-105). Most papers in this period involved taxonomic description of the seemingly endless phenotypes in the tribe. [email protected], [email protected] RESUMEN Los lepidópteros nocturnos ostentan una gran diversidad de especies, sobresaliendo los grandes ejemplares denominados esfinges, a continuación en el presente trabajo se procede a citar y describir las especies halladas en el Valle del Rio Rímac - Departamento de Lima registrándose un total de 12 especies de la familia Sphingidae y estas dentro de dos sub familias (Macroglossini, con seis géneros) y (Sphingini con tres géneros) con un total de 9 géneros hallados, siendo estos: Hyles, Erinnyis, Pachylia, Callionima, Aellops, Eumorpha, Agrius, Cocytius y Manduca) entre las cuales la sub familia Sphingini es la más diversificada con 5 especies y 3 géneros. In this paper, the species found in the Rímac River Valley - Department of Lima are cited and described, registering a total of 12 species of the family Sphingidae and these within two sub-families (Macroglossini, with six genera) and (Sphingini with three genera) with a total of 9 genera found, these being: Hyles, Erinnyis, Pachylia, Callionima, Aellops, Eumorpha, Agrius, Cocytius and Manduca) among which the Sphingini subfamily is the most diversified with 5 species and 3 genera. -

Classification of Tropical Vegetation by Dominica Elaine Harrison A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s of Science Earth and Atmospheric Sciences University of Alberta © Dominica Elaine Harrison, 2016 Thesis abstract The increasing anthropogenic pressure on biodiversity in the tropics is resulting in changes to ecosystem structure and increasing species extinction rates (Collen et al. 2013). These issues are heightened in the tropics where 50% of the world’s biodiversity is held in 7% of the world’s terrestrial landmass (Urquhart 2001). The biodiversity of vegetation has been used as an indicator of the overall health and processes occurring in a biological system. This thesis explores ways to quantify the biodiversity of vegetation using different avenues of vegetation classification. In the second chapter of this thesis the leaf economic spectra (LES), a vegetation classification that attempts to provide a general framework to assess plant functional diversity, is used to explore the relationships between the conventional plant functional traits with the newly applied anatomical traits (Wright et al. 2004). This system uses economic principles to help understand plant ecology trade-offs and performance strategies. The LES was used to discern two plant functional groups (PFG), lianas and tree species, at two different Panamanian tropical sites, a tropical wet forest and a tropical dry forest. This was accomplished by examining the interactions between commonly used whole-leaf traits from the LES and newly applied anatomical traits. The addition of anatomical traits to the LES is a new approach (Reich 2014). The findings of this investigation support the hypothesis that trees are resource conservative when compared to their liana counterpart, which are thought to be resource acquisitive (Schnitzer 2005; Asner and Martin 2012).
