E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. This paper investigates the butterfly fauna of the ‘Serra do Rola-Moça’ State Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil. We eval- uate i) the seasonal variation of species richness and composition; and ii) the variation in composition of the local butterfly assemblage among three sampling sites and between the dry and rainy seasons. Sampling was carried out monthly between November 2012 and October 2013, using entomological nets. After a total sampling effort of 504 net hours, 311 species were recorded. One of them is endangered in Brazil, and eight are probable new species. Furthermore, two species were new records for the region and eight considered endemic of the Cerrado domain. There was no significant difference in species richness between the dry and the rainy seasons, however the species composition varies significantly among sampling sites. Due to its special, heterogeneous environment, which is home to a rich butterfly fauna, its preservation is important for the conservation of the regional butterfly fauna. -

Wing pattern diversity is specifically present among papilionid butterflies. Whether a correlation between color and the evolution of these butterflies exists so far remained unsolved. Results: We here investigate the Cattlehearts, Parides, a small Neotropical genus of papilionid butterflies with 36 members, the wings of which are marked by distinctly colored patches. By applying various physical techniques, we investigate the coloration toolkit of the wing scales. The wing scales contain two different, wavelength-selective absorbing pigments, causing pigmentary colorations. Scale ridges with multilayered lamellae, lumen multilayers or gyroid photonic crystals in the scale lumen create structural colors that are variously combined with these pigmentary colors. Conclusions: The pigmentary and structural traits strongly correlate with the taxonomical distribution of Parides species. The experimental findings add crucial insight into the evolution of butterfly wing scales and show the importance of morphological parameter mapping for butterfly phylogenetics. A pigment, which absorbs maximally at ~395 nm, is immersed predominantly throughout the elaborate upper lamina. This pigment acts as a long- pass filter shaping the reflectance spectrum of the underlying photonic crystals. -

Abstract This study describes the results and collection practices for obtaining arthropod samples to be studied as potential sources of new medicines in a bioprospecting effort. From 1994 to 1998, 1800 arthropod samples of 6-10 g were collected in 21 sites of the Área de Conservación Guancaste (A.C.G) in Northwestern Costa Rica. The samples corresponded to 642 species distributed in 21 orders and 95 families. -

AUSTIN Department of Zoology, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32611, and Nevada State Museum and Historical Society, 700 Twin Lakes Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89107, USA ABSTRACT.— The state of Rondonia in west central Brazil apparently has the highest reported butterfly diversity in the world, with an estimated 1,500-1,600 species living within several square kilometers in the central part of that state. A preliminary checklist of over 800 identified species is given, and some of the factors contributing to this diversity are described. The tropical rain forest in this area is being rapidly cleared for development and the creation of one or more inviolate biological preserves is urgently needed in order to save a living sample of the incredibly diverse fauna and flora for study by future generations. Rondonia, one of the newest states in western central Brazil, occupies some 93,840 square miles (243,044 sq km) in the southwestern part of the Amazon Basin of South America. This territory, which borders Bolivia to the south and west, was formerly a part of the state of Amazonas and until the last two decades, was primarily important to Brazil's economy only during the Amazon rubber boom, which collapsed in 1912. The androconial structures of each species were used as the main characters for the analysis. The ingroup Parides comprises four main clades, which are discussed in the light of evolutionary and biogeographic evidence. 1. Introduction The genus Parides Hubner , [1819], has been studied for a long time, but only recently has it been subjected to cladistic analysis. This showed an unresolved monophylum within the Troidini, encom passing terminal taxa with South American and Oriental distributions. Miller (1987) hypothesized the monophyly of Parides sensu lato by the following apomorphic characters: 1 - Females with a highly sclerotized invagination dorsally to ductus bursae. 2 - A wide ductus bursae. 3 - A large vesica. While the neotropical subgenus Parides was characterised by: 1 - Dorso-ventrally oriented signa. 2 - Lower level androconia curled. Several approaches aimed to the recognition of relation ships among the species groups resulted in different arrangements (Rothschild & J ordan , 1906; Munroe, 1961; Hancock , 1978; Miller 1987; Tyler etal. 1994; Brown et al. 1995). All the species considered are endemic to Central and South America, the larvae are monophagous on Aristolochia plants (Aristolochiaceae), and the adults are linked to mimicry rings (tab.
