Wilkins PRESENTACION La presente obra es la séptima parte de un proyecto que aspira a catalogar e ilustrar a las principales familias de mariposas y polillas de la República Argentina. Se propone acercar al lector toda la información disponible referente tanto a la distribución, biología, conducta, períodos de vuelo y datos de importancia o simplemente anecdóticos que ayuden a su conocimiento. Se procuró que el catálogo tenga un formato tanto estético como práctico, y fue concebido como un catálogo comentado, hecho que permitió mantener una comunicación cercana con el lector, basada en un lenguaje conciso y fácil de leer, teniendo siempre como premisa que la presente obra está dirigida tanto para profesionales, naturalistas, aficionados a la entomología y todo aquel que, con conocimiento previo o no, guste de las mariposas. Esta séptima entrega del catálogo se enfoca en la familia Papilionidae. Se hicieron consideraciones generales acerca de dicha familia, asi como también de sus estadios inmaduros, pupas, adultos, distribución, epocas de vuelo, parasitismo, etc. Dentro del catálogo propiamente dicho se numeraron e ilustraron a las especies que habitan suelo argentino. En un capítulo aparte se hizo referencia a las especies que fueron extraidas de la lista oficial y se justificaron dichas omisiones. Los objetivos principales de los volúmenes de Lepidóptera Argentina son el poder ilustrar en colores y a tamaño real las especies conocidas de las principales familias de mariposas y polillas de nuestro país, y actualizar tanto la nomenclatura como la lista de especies. Si cumple con esas premisas, se considerará cumplida la tarea. F. C. PENCO 5 INTRODUCCION La familia Papilionidae siempre deslumbró a los naturalistas y aficionados debido al tamaño y belleza de sus representantes, por ésta razón ha sido muy estudiada a través de la historia. Entre las publicaciones cuyo tratamiento consideramos de mayor importancia porque hace hincapié en la fauna neotropical, queremos destacar a Description Physique de la République Argentine de Burmeister (1878), Biologia Centrali-Americana de Godman & Salvin (1879-1901), A revision of the American papilios de Rothschild & Jordan (1906) y Die Gross Schmetterlinge der Erde de Adalbert Seitz (1924). De carácter un tanto más general se destacan The illustrated encyclopedia of the butterfly world de Paul Smart (1975) y Butterflies of the world de H. L. Lewis (1975) los cuales han sido los libros de cabecera de los aficionados a las mariposas en las décadas del ochenta y noventa. Un esfuerzo loable por la calidad de sus ilustraciones fueron Butterflies of the Neotropical Region: Part I Papilionidae & Pierdae de Bernard D´Abrera (1981), Butterflies of South America (1984) y The Concise Atlas of Butterflies of the World (2001), asi como las partes dedicadas a ésta familia pertenecientes a Butterflies of the World editada por Erich Bauer y Thomas Frankenbach. Entre ellas podemos citar a Möhn (1999a; 1999b; 2002; 2006) y Racheli (2006). Queremos también destacar la revisión de Racheli & Pariset (1992) llamada “Il genere Battus, Tassonomia e Storia Naturale” aparecida como suplemento al volumen XXIII de la publicación Fragmenta Entomologica. Dentro de la bibliografía editada en el país y dedicada a dicha familia, se destacan los escritos de Kohler (1923), Breyer (1940; 1943; 1945), Jörgensen (1935) y Hayward (1951; 1967 y 1973). Valiosos datos biológicos de algunas especies fueron aportados por Schreiter (1930), Bourquin (1945) y una lista de plantas hospedadoras fue compilada recientemente en el trabajo póstumo de Pastrana (2004). En el año 2000 los aficionados se vieron gratamente sorprendidos por el lanzamiento de varios libros en forma casi consecutiva acerca de las mariposas argentinas, en los que, por supuesto, se encontraban representantes de la familia Papilionidae. Ellos fueron 100 mariposas argentinas (Klimaitis, 2000), Mariposas argentinas (Varga, 2000), Mariposas Bonaerenses (Canals, 2000) y posteriormente dos libros homónimos dedicados a las Mariposas de Misiones (Tricio, Fernández Díaz & Morawicki, 2002; Canals, 2003). Los más recientes libros nacionales se refieren parcialmente a dicha familia, se trata de las publicaciones Garden Butterflies of Buenos Aires (Mattoni & Vannucci, 2008); Mariposas Serranas de Argentina Central (Volkmann & Núñez Bustos, 2010) y Mariposas de la ciudad de Buenos Aires y alrededores (Núñez Bustos, 2010). Sin lugar a dudas el Catálogo de los Ropalóceros Argentinos de Hayward (1973) ha sido una de las obras de consulta de mayor importancia de la lepidopterología nacional, pero lamentablemente ha quedado obsoleto debido a los cambios nomenclatoriales ocurridos en las últimas cuatro décadas. Actualmente Klimaitis & Núñez Bustos se encuentran preparando una guía para la identificación de las mariposas de Argentina, la cual promete ser la obra más completa acerca de los lepidópteros diurnos argentinos desde la mencionada obra de Hayward. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS Se han tomado como base para esta obra el tomo cuarto de Genera et species animalium argentinorum (Hayward, 1967), el Catálogo de los Ropalóceros argentinos (Hayward, 1973), y se ha seguido la organización sistemática de las obras Swallowtail butterflies of the Americas (Tyler et al., 1994) y el Atlas of Neotropical Lepidoptera, Checklist: Part 4A: Hesperioidea & Papilionoidea (Lamas et al., 2004). En la presente obra se introducen y numeran a las especies de la familia Papilionidae que habitan suelo argentino. Se hace mención de los países o regiones donde fueron registradas y entre paréntesis los nombres de las provincias donde se las puede encontrar dentro de Argentina. Se menciona además toda la información disponible acerca de las plantas hospedadoras, hábitat, horario de vuelo y altitud sobre el nivel del mar. Se agregaron localidades y fechas de colecta solo en los casos donde se considero que fuera relevante. Se ilustraron ambos sexos de casi todas las especies, con sus alas extendidas, en vista dorsal y a la derecha de los mismos se puede apreciar un corte de las alas en vista ventral. Cuando la falta de espacio no lo permitió, se ilustró solo la mitad derecha de los ejemplares hembra en faz dorsal. En los casos en donde se ilustró un solo ejemplar de la especie, se optó por ilustrar un macho. Los nombres de las especies se presentan en letra imprenta negrita para facilitar su lectura, mientras que los sinónimos se encuentran en un tamaño menor y cursiva. Debajo del nombre científico de cada especie figura el nombre con el que fue bautizado originalmente. Detrás de cada uno de ellos se incluye el apellido del descriptor y el año de la publicación donde apareció por primera vez dicho nombre. La realización del presente catálogo exigió, como hemos dicho, una exhaustiva búsqueda bibliográfica, complementada con la obtención de datos provenientes de colecciones entomológicas tanto institucionales como privadas, las cuales fueron identificadas en las referencias. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. This paper investigates the butterfly fauna of the ‘Serra do Rola-Moça’ State Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil. We eval- uate i) the seasonal variation of species richness and composition; and ii) the variation in composition of the local butterfly assemblage among three sampling sites and between the dry and rainy seasons. Sampling was carried out monthly between November 2012 and October 2013, using entomological nets. After a total sampling effort of 504 net hours, 311 species were recorded. One of them is endangered in Brazil, and eight are probable new species. Furthermore, two species were new records for the region and eight considered endemic of the Cerrado domain. There was no significant difference in species richness between the dry and the rainy seasons, however the species composition varies significantly among sampling sites. Due to its special, heterogeneous environment, which is home to a rich butterfly fauna, its preservation is important for the conservation of the regional butterfly fauna.

Certain important records of the previous several years are also included. Additionally, the checklist incorporates records of a number of other lepidopterists. The primary focus of the checklist, then, is upon recent collecting, rather than being an attempt to list all known records from the Mid-Valley area. All lepidopterists collecting in the park and vicinity are urged to send copies of their records to the authors and/or the park authorities. A number of species on the list have been taken in Hidalgo Co. but not yet within the actual confines of the park; the annotations will indicate which species these are. Some of these have been taken at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, approximately thirty miles down river, in habitats similar to those within the park. Others have been taken within several miles of the park, in nearby towns and along roadsides. These species can be reasonably expected to occur in the park, and their inclusion upon this list should alert the collector to their possible presence. The annotations have been kept necessarily brief. They are intended to aid the visiting lepidopterist in evaluating the significance of his catches. Local larval food plants are given where known. Much, however, is still to be learned regarding the life histories of even some of the commoner species.

In view of the importance of sampling these areas, the present study conducted the first butterfly inventory of a coastal area in the state of Paraná. Samples were taken in the Floresta Estadual do Palmito, from February 2014 through January 2015, using insect nets and traps for fruit-feeding butterfly species. A total of 200 species were recorded, in the families Hesperiidae (77), Nymphalidae (73), Riodinidae (20), Lycaenidae (19), Pieridae (7) and Papilionidae (4). Particularly notable records included the rare and vulnerable Pseudotinea hemis (Schaus, 1927), representing the lowest elevation record for this species, and Temenis huebneri korallion Fruhstorfer, 1912, a new record for Paraná. These results reinforce the need to direct sampling efforts to poorly inventoried areas, to increase knowledge of the distribution and occurrence patterns of butterflies in Brazil.
