Componen la muestra más de 100 obras —dibujos, carte- lería revolucionaria, bocetos y libros infantiles ilustrados— procedentes fundamentalmente de los fondos del coleccionista estadounidense Merrill C. Berman (Nueva York) y de la colección de la Bibliothèque de l’Heure Joyeuse de París. Lébedev, cuya obra forma parte de las principales colecciones y museos del mundo, es conocido fuera de su país sólo fragmentariamen- te. Este proyecto no pretende constituir una exhibición completa de la producción del artista; aspira a servir para una primera mirada sobre su extensa carrera. Está organizado en torno a su indudable talento como dibujante y grafi sta revolucionario, además de contar con signifi cativas muestras de su trabajo en el campo de la ilustración de libros infantiles —quizá el aspecto de su obra más conocido fuera de Rusia—. Formado en San Petersburgo, el talento de Lébedev se manifestó ya tras la Revolución de Octubre de 1917 y el establecimiento del ré- gimen soviético. Fue entonces, entre 1920 y 1922, cuando empezó a dibujar sus célebres “ventanas” de la ROSTA, los carteles producidos para la oficina regional del norte de la ROSTA (el popular acrónimo de la agencia telegráfica soviética, en cuya sede de Petrogrado Lébedev fue jefe adjunto del departamento de carteles). Basados en xilografías tradicionales (los llamados lubkí), las “ventanas” de Lébedev revelan los primeros experimentos del artista con el cubismo y el futurismo, decisivos en su carrera mixta de vanguardista y revolucionario, de cultivador tanto de la abstracción como del realismo. Un retrato del artista Masha Koval Para comprender mi trabajo artístico, hay que saber y tener presente que soy un artista de los años 20 (V. Lébedev) El artista ruso-soviético Vladímir Lébedev (1891-1967) es conocido en todo el mundo sobre todo por sus excelentes trabajos en el campo de la ilustración de libros infantiles. Esta fama parece ha- ber eclipsado, con su luz deslumbrante, otras facetas de su poliédrico talento. Porque, al mismo tiempo, Lébedev fue uno de los pintores universales de la vanguardia rusa. A su autoría se deben algunos de los trabajos gráfi cos y de los decorados teatrales más geniales del momento. La eclo- sión de su actividad artística se produce durante el período más esplendoroso de la historia del arte soviético: los años 20 del siglo pasado. Una época de reformas revolucionarias en la sociedad rusa, que coincide con el auge de la vanguardia artística, cuando, en unas condiciones desconocidas de pluralismo en las que conviven multitud de corrientes artísticas, se desarrolla la búsqueda de un nuevo lenguaje fi gurativo.

In 1919, to ensure Russian women supported the Communist party, the Zhenotdel, or women’s department, was established. Its aim was propagating the Communist party’s message through local branches attached to party committees at every level of the hierarchy. This dissertation is an analysis of the Communist party’s Zhenotdel in Petrograd/ Leningrad during the 1920s. Most Western Zhenotdel histories were written in the pre-archival era, and this is the first study to extensively utilize material in the former Leningrad party archive, TsGAIPD SPb. Both the quality and quantity of Zhenotdel fonds is superior at St.Peterburg’s TsGAIPD SPb than Moscow’s RGASPI. While most scholars have used Moscow-centric journals like Kommunistka, Krest’ianka and Rabotnitsa, this study has thoroughly utilized the Leningrad Zhenotdel journal Rabotnitsa i krest’ianka and a rich and extensive collection of Zhenotdel questionnaires. Women’s speeches from Zhenotdel conferences, as well as factory and field reports, have also been folded into the dissertation’s five chapters on: organizational issues, the unemployed, housewives and prostitutes, peasants, and workers.

The catalogue include some of our usual sections along with new experimental ones. Interesting that many books from our selection explore experiments in different fields like art and science themselves. For example our usual sections of art exhibition catalogues and science include such names as Goncharova and Mendeleev - both were great exepimenters. Theatre section keeps exploring experiments on and off stage of the 1920s under striking constrictivist wrappers. We continue to explore early Soviet period with an important section on art for the masses where we gathered editions which shed light on how Soviets used all available matters to create a new citizen on shatters of the past and how to make him a loyal tool of propaganda. Photography and art of that period is gathered in a separate section with such names like Zdanevich and Telingater among the artists. Books on architecture include Chernikhov fantasies, Stepanova’s design of metro book, study of Soviet workers’ clubs and the most spectacular item is account of the work made by architecture studios in early 1930s led by most famous Russian architects. Probably the jewel of our selection is a rare collection of sheet music from 1920s-30s or more precisely cover designs. We have been gathering them for a year and are happy to finally share our discoveries on this subject with you. However, soon after the revolution many within the Bolshevik Party, including Trotsky, were denouncing Soviet bureaucracy as a persistent problem. In fact, for Trotsky the problem of Soviet bureaucracy became the central political and theoretical issue that preoccupied him for the remainder of his life. This study examines the development of Leon Trotsky’s views on that subject from the first years after the Russian Revolution through the completion of his work The Revolution Betrayed in 1936. In his various writings over these years Trotsky expressed three main understandings of the nature of the problem: During the civil war and the first years of NEP he denounced inefficiency in the distribution of supplies to the Red Army and resources throughout the economy as a whole.

In doing so, it contributes to the historiography on human rights, on the WCC, and on religious internationalism. The first part of the dissertation argues that from the 1940s to the 1960s, the WCC’s human rights engagement was strongly focused on religious freedom and extended well beyond the United Nations.
