Sasaki. 79 Drawings by Hakuin Ekaku.123 Index.147 viii FOREWORD The First Zen Institute of America, founded in New York City in 1930 by the late Sasaki Sokei-an Roshi for the purpose of instructing American students of Zen in the traditional manner, celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary on February 15, 1955. To commemorate that event it invited Miura Isshu Roshi of the Koon-ji, a monastery belonging to the Nanzen-ji branch of Rinzai Zen and situated not far from Tokyo, to come to New York and give a series of talks at the Institute on the subject of koan study, the study which is basic for monks and laymen in traditional, transmitted Rinzai Zen. -

1 The Form and function of Koan Literature A Historical Overview T. GRIFFITH FOULK ANY DISCUSSION o f koan s i n th e histor y o f Eas t Asia n Buddhis m needs t o star t wit h a definitio n o f the wor d "koan " itself , fo r althoug h th e word ha s entere d int o relativel y commo n Englis h usage , fe w people hav e a clear idea o f what it refers to, and ambiguities remain even in scholarly stud- ies.1 The first part o f this chapter, accordingly , is dedicated t o a brief history of the koan, with particular attentio n t o th e etymology of the word and th e evolution of its meaning in China an d Japan. Th e second part delineates the range of texts that I take to be "koan literature " an d explains my reasons for regarding the m as such. The remaining part s of the chapter are dedicated to a form-critical analysi s of the comple x internal structur e o f the koan literatur e and an exploration o f how that literatur e has both mirrored an d serve d as a model for its social and ritual functions. The treatmen t o f the koa n a s a literar y genre in thi s chapter ma y strik e some readers as peculiar or even irrelevant. After all , many accounts of koans today, both popular an d scholarly, describe them as devices that ar e meant to focus th e mind in meditation, t o confound the discursive intellect, freezing it into a single ball of doubt, an d finally to trigger an awakening (J. -

In the Rinzai Zen tradition, Joshu's "Mu" is considered that one koan. However, one koan has many aspects. Hakuin Zenji divided these aspects into five categories. Genuine insight is no other than the realization of zero ness of our being--that is sunyata [Hosshin--Dharmakaya, Category I]. One of the aspects of sunyata is to see the dynamic activity of Dharma [Kikan--Dynamism, Category II]. Still another aspect of sunyata is to appreciate the dialog through verbal expression [Gonsen--Verbal Expression, Catego~y III]. The other aspects of sunyata are so near, hence, easy to miss; consequently, difficult to pass [ Nanto--Diff icul t to Pass, Category IV]. The last categ-ory is Kojo--Endless Integration [Category V], which includes Goi, The Five Ranks and The Ten Precepts. Here I have selected about 100 koans but did not categorize them. I am planning to add about 10 more koans from The Transmission of the Lamp in the near future. Also, it is my intention to ask the students to present Jakugo, or "capping phrases," for selected koans. At any rate, I am convinced if these are thoroughly digested and looked into with genuine insight, one by one, we can cultivate the perspectives of our vistas. -

In the end. some of them were practiced as spiritual training in themselves; they were then called “Ways.” This book includes translations of some rare texts on Zen and the Ways. One is a sixteenth- century Zen text compiled from Kamakura temple records of the previous three centuries, giving accounts of the very first Zen interviews in Japan. It gives the actual koan “test questions” which disciples had to answer. In the koan called “Sermon,” for instance, among the tests are: How would you give a sermon to a one-month-old child? To someone screaming with pain in hell? To a foreign pirate who cannot speak your language? To Maitreya in the Tushita heaven? Extracts are translated from the “secret scrolls” of fencing, archery, judo, and so on. These scrolls were given in feudal days to pupils when they graduated from the academy, and some of them contain profound psychological and spiritual hints, but in deliberately cryptic form. These phrases appear at different times and in different contexts, beginning with Indian sutras that were translated into Chinese, and ending with Classical Chan (Jap. Zen) Buddhist texts. Each context is new, and one can understand the different expressions in different ways. Some expressions can be understood in the same way despite the context, and others have to be understood differently, depending on the context. At the outset of the study is a group of sayings the content of which is metaphorical hunger. -

The distillation of this Oriental philosophy is contained in the Zen sayings—pithy phrases and poems handed down from a distinguished line of Chinese and Japanese masters. Over the centuries, their sayings and writings have been compiled into voluminous handbooks. The most complete of these are the various editions of Zemin Kushu, or the "Zen Forest Saying Anthology."
