  • Kresnik: an Attempt at a Mythological Reconstruction
Kresnik: An Attempt at a Mythological Reconstruction Zmago Šmitek The Slovene Kresnik tradition has numerous parallels in Indo-European mythologies. Research has established connections between the myth about a hero’s fight with a snake (dragon) and the vegetational cult of Jarilo/Zeleni Jurij. The Author establishes a hypothesis about Iranian influences (resemblance to figures of Yima/Yama and Mithra) and outlines a later transformation of Kresnik in the period of Christianization. If it is possible to find a mythological figure in Slovene folk tradition which is remi- niscent of a “higher” deity, this would undoubtedly be Kresnik. It is therefore not strange that different researchers were of the opinion that Kresnik represented the key to old Slovene mythology and religion.1 Their explanations, however, are mostly outdated, insufficciently explained or contrasting in the context of contemporary findings of comparative mythol- ogy and religiology. Equally doubtful is also the authenticity of older records about Kresnik since the still living traditions seem not to verify them.2 Kresnik thus remains a controver- sial and mysterious image as far as the origin of his name is concerned, but also concerning the role and the function it was supposed to have in old Slovene, Slavic and Indo-European mythological structures. The first extensive and thorough comparative study about Kr(e)snik was written by Maja Bošković-Stulli.3 She justly ascertained that there were differences between the major- ity of Slovene records on Kresnik and the data on a being with the same name collected in Croatia and east of it. On the other hand, however, certain fragments of Slovene tradition did correspond to the image of Krsnik which she had documented during the course of her 1 Kresnik was linked to Božič or Svarožič (Jakob Kelemina, Bajke in pripovedke slovenskega ljudstva, Znanstvena knjižnica, Tome 4, Celje 1930, p.

  • CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of Study It Was
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of Study It was amazing and amusing when in my childhood listen the fable story of Sang Kancil and its series (the mouse deer) as the most popular children stories in my childhood. This story firstly was undocumented and it was told orally from the parents to their children. Such the traditional story shows the traditional setting of culture, custom, and nature as well. The jungle, the river and the farm field characterizes the setting of story. While the crocodile, snail, tiger, elephant, farmer, and the mouse deer itself became the characters in the story. It firmly depicts the influence of culture and nature to the traditional children stories. Being Sang Kancil (the mouse deer) is the well - known story for children, mostly it was told every day before the children were slept by the parents. Consequently, the following day, the children discussion in the school will talk of the abundance of this story, discussing the smartness of the mouse deer, laughing at the elephant’s silliness, crocodile’s confusion, and tiger stupidity, chatting how could the mouse deer cheat them and so forth. The simple discussion of the children dealing with the story is always about the amusement, funny, and entertaining simple topics. Attending the children to listen the stories will emerge two kinds of possibilities, first they will be laughing and happy and perhaps secondly, they will yawn as the reaction of their boredom. It is the natural response and honest expression from the children from the entire world in acquainted with the interesting and uninteresting of the stories that they have heard.

There are many people who claim to be experts on vampire lore and legend who will say that they know all about Vlad Tepes and Count Dracula or that they can name several different types of vampiric species. I can do that, too, but that is not how I came to be a known vam- pirologist. Knowing the “who, what and where” is one thing, but knowing and more impor- tantly understanding the “why” is another.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.34291/BV2019/04/Borenovic Mirjana Borenović René Girard’s Scapegoating and Stereotypes of Perse- cution in the Divine Battle between Veles and Perun Mehanizem grešnega kozla pri Renéju Girardu in pre- ganjanje v božanskem boju med Velesom in Perunom Abstract: This paper describes René Girard’s interpretation of myths and explains the scapegoating mechanism. This interpretation is then applied to the Slavic basic myth of the divine battle between Veles and Perun. The paper demon- strates that the myth of divine battle still holds enough information to identify and analyse the scapegoating mechanism, all the stereotypes of persecution, an innocent victim or the scapegoat and the violence committed against him. The analysis emphasises and decodes the process in which a human victim of persecution was transformed into a mighty god Veles. The paper also critically evaluates and points out the shortcomings of René Girard’s interpretation of myths in the context of Slavic religion and mythology. Keywords: stereotypes, persecution, Slavic mythology, Veles, Perun, scapegoating, mythology Povzetek: Članek opisuje interpretacijo mitov pri Renéju Girardu in pojasnjuje me- hanizem grešnega kozla.
