“KAIST Innovation for Science and Technology for Global Society” Dr. Sung-Mo “Steve” Kang, the President of KAIST Dr. Kang has been a leader in for over two decades. He received his BS degree from Fairleigh Dickinson in 1970, MS degree from the State University of New York, Buffalo in 1972, and obtained his Ph.D. degree from UC Berkeley in 1975. Dr. Kang is a Distinguished Chair Professor on leave of the University of , Santa Cruz, and a Emeritus of the University of California, Merced. From March 2007 to June 2011, he was Chancellor of the University of California, Merced and Professor of Engineering, and from January 2001 to February 2007, he was Dean of Engineering and Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz. From August 1995 to December 2000, he served as Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Prior to joining UIUC in 1985, he was Supervisor of High-End Microprocessor Design at AT&T Bell Laboratories at Murray Hill, N.J. and also a member of . He is a fellow of IEEE, ACM, AAAS, a foreign member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea and a member of the Korea Academy of Science and Technology. He serves on the President’s Advisory Council for Science and Technology of the Republic of Korea and also the presidential advisory committees of the Politecnico di Torino, Italy and the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, United Arab Emirates. Dr. Kang will introduce KAIST and their innovative efforts for Science and Technology for Global Society. Since 1971 KAIST has made remarkable contributions to the economic development of Korea through rigorous research and education in many fields of national importance such as microelectronics, display technology, transportation industry, ICT, among others. Today, many KAIST graduates are leaders in industry and higher education not only in Korea, but also in the USA. KAIST has been rated in the top 20s worldwide in engineering and in the top 40s in basic science. Its management program has been rated in the top tier in Asia. KAIST is continually innovating for Knowledge creation, Advancement, Integrity, Sustainability and Trust to become a trusted global leader in science and technology for the 21st century global society. Dr. Kang’s talk will highlight strategic planning for innovation in academic programs, research programs and technology transfer programs, especially for Kreation-X Valley in Daedeok and Sejong City.
