2020 Annual Report DEAR FRIENDS With the Coronavirus national emergency declaration, Northern Illinois Hospice’s priorities shifted. Leadership pivoted and narrowed its scope to worldwide pandemic infection control and keeping patients and staff safe. By April 2020, the first individual with both a terminal diagnosis and COVID-19 was admitted. Now, more than 400 days have passed and COVID-19 has become an unwanted, extended guest of the American experience. Northern Illinois Hospice continues to be diligent with its emergency management efforts. Our team has done an amazing job, demonstrating the commitment, expertise, and quality and safety practices for which we are known. Beyond COVID-19, additionally last year: • A Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) Loan was secured, which helped with payroll for several weeks during the peak of the pandemic, and Health and Human Services (HHS) stimulus funds were received to offset COVID-related expenses. • A Capital Improvement Fund was established to From left: Northern Illinois Hospice Chief Executive plan for future needs of our building. This mission expansion currently is underway. • Community outreach continued, and we partnered with organizations like the Alzheimer’s Association to present webinars tailored to individuals caring for seriously ill loved ones at home. We also teamed up with local nursing and assisted living facilities to offer events like Puppy Parades to bring joy to socially-isolated residents. -

Tout le cercle du spectacle en effervescence, de la Diva jusqu'au librettiste, va essayer de se faire engager, afin d'entrevoir les quelques mois de tranquillité indispensables à ces artistes aux abois. Une magnifique occasion d'illustrer les pétillantes ressources des artistes de l'époque mais aussi leurs travers très humains, et leurs préoccupations très quotidiennes... peut-être pas si éloignées de celles des intermittents d'aujourd'hui ! Là où l'on peut espérer que le talent fait la différence, on s'aperçoit que les us et coutumes de la scène doivent être respectés à la lettre, sous peine de cruelle exclusion de ce petit monde. Un monde où la séduction, l'envie, l'engagement, la jalousie, frappent ceux qui se révèlent affaiblis par une situation fragilisante d'insécurité de l'emploi, et qui sont dévorés dans le même temps par l'irrépressible besoin d'être artiste. -

One of Wilder's nastiest, most cynical efforts, who can say he wasn't actually soft-pedalling? He certainly thought it was the best film he'd ever made. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Tom Shadyac, 1994) A goofy detective turns town upside-down in search of a missing dolphin - any old plot would have done for oven-ready megastar Jim Carrey. A ski-jump hairdo, a zillion impersonations, making his bum "talk" - Ace Ventura showcases Jim Carrey's near-rapturous gifts for physical comedy long before he became encumbered by notions of serious acting. An Actor's Revenge (Kon Ichikawa, 1963) Prolific Japanese director Ichikawa scored a bulls-eye with this beautifully stylized potboiler that took its cues from traditional Kabuki theatre. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation. -

Je ne fais jamais rien, ni une conférence, ni un cours, sans me plonger dans Guth, qui a tout dit de tous les auteurs car son "Histoire de la littérature française" est fantastique! Que ce soit en une demi-page ou en 50, il dit tout de l'auteur, de son époque, de la société, de sa famille. Et c'est à Hugo qu'il consacre 50 pages car Hugo est un monument en dépit de ses faiblesses. C'est d'ailleurs là que j'ai découvert qu'il y avait des germes de folie dans la famille Hugo, germes auxquels son frère a succombé et Hugo a eu également 1 des problèmes "nerveux". Son œuvre est sublime mais son théâtre est ce qu'il y a de moins bon, c'est du mauvais théâtre - et on ne peut pas dire le contraire - avec parfois des scènes absolument étonnantes. Et, comme le souligne Paul Guth, ce qui est dommage, c'est que Hugo aurait pu faire un théâtre presque digne de Rostand s'il s'était arrêté à ses personnages picaresques, personnages dans lesquels on sent qu'il est inspiré comme dans "Ruy Blas" : Don César de Bazan pourrait être Cyrano. 2 Déboulonner la statue c'est donc beaucoup dire, mais, de tout temps, je m'en suis toujours rendu compte, alors que, (c’est très curieux) je crois n’avoir jamais monté de Hugo. Non parce que je pensais que c'était une tache trop difficile. On m'avait proposé de monter "Ruy Blas" pour un festival et de jouer Don Salluste mais le projet n'a pas abouti.
