Breaking Down the Barriers, 785-816 2013-1-050-037-000234-1 Pan-Sinitic Object Marking: * Morphology and Syntax Hilary Chappell (曹茜蕾) EHESS In Chinese languages, when a direct object occurs in a non-canonical position preceding the main verb, this SOV structure can be morphologically marked by a preposition whose source comes largely from verbs or deverbal prepositions. For example, markers such as kā 共 in Southern Min are ultimately derived from the verb ‘to accompany’, pau11 幫 in many Huizhou and Wu dialects is derived from the verb ‘to help’ and bǎ 把 from the verb ‘to hold’ in standard Mandarin and the Jin dialects. In general, these markers are used to highlight an explicit change of state affecting a referential object, located in this preverbal position. This analysis sets out to address the issue of diversity in such object-marking constructions in order to examine the question of whether areal patterns exist within Sinitic languages on the basis of the main lexical fields of the object markers, if not the construction types. The possibility of establishing four major linguistic zones in China is thus explored with respect to grammaticalization pathways. Acting on a tip from his brother, the police inspector He (2) Tao (1) arrested Bai Sheng, the Daylight Rat, for his part in the hijacking of the birthday gifts for the premier. After sufficient torture, Bai Sheng fessed up and confirmed that Chao Gai, the ward chief at East Bank Village in Yuncheng (4,2) County, was the ringleader of the plot. So He Tao was dispatched with 20 men to go to Yuncheng County, where they were to get the cooperation of the local magistrate and arrest Chao Gai and his co-conspirators. When He Tao got to Yuncheng County, court was in recess. So he talked to a clerk of the court, a man named Song Jiang. Now, this Song Jiang was apparently a man of some renown, because He Tao showed him great deference and confided to him the reason for the visit, asking him to help. Song Jiang said sure, no problem; I’ll take you to see the magistrate as soon as he comes back in the afternoon. In the meantime, pardon me while I go take care of a few things at home. So Song Jiang left He Tao at the teahouse across the street from the courthouse and hopped on his horse. But as soon as he left the town, Song Jiang galloped off toward the east. Soooo, what gives? Who the heck is this Song Jiang? And where is he going? As it turns out, this lowly clerk of the court in a podunk little county is going to be THE central character of our novel. -

Welcome to the Water Margin Podcast. This is episode 22. Last time, Chao Gai and Liu Tang were planning to hijack the convoy of birthday presents meant for the premier. They brought this idea to the brains of the operation, a local scholar named Wu Yong. Wu Yong suggested that they needed seven or eight bodies to pull this off, but not just any bodies. To that end, he went to recruit three fisherman brothers in Stone Tablet Village: Ruan Xiao’er, Ruan Xiaowu, and Ruan Xiaoqi. As we rejoin the narrative, Wu Yong was spending the night with the three Ruan brothers, and they were drinking and feasting over dinner at the home of one of the brothers. After a few cups, Wu Yong once again broached the pretext of his visit -- that he was there to secure a bunch of big fat juicy fish for a wealthy patron. But the Ruan brothers told him that such big fish were no longer available in these waters. “But you have such a large fishing ground here,” Wu Yong asked, “How come you can’t find big fish?” “To tell you the truth, professor,” said Ruan Xiao’er, the eldest brother, “such big fish can only be found in the waters around Liangshan. The lake around this village is too small for fish that big.” “Well, the marsh around Liangshan is not far from here, and the two bodies of water are connected,” Wu Yong said. “So why don’t you go there to get some fish?” “[Sigh] Don’t even ask,” Ruan Xiao’er sighed. -

PROHIBITION OF JIATOU ZAJU IN THE MING DYNASTY AND THE PORTRAYAL OF THE EMPEROR ON STAGE Tian Yuan Tan (Chen Tianyuan) INTRODUCTION: THE TERMS JIATOU AND JIATOU ZAJU Portraying the emperor on stage was not at all uncommon in the Yuan dynasty (1260-1368). This can be gathered from the fact that the emperor role, designated by the term jiatou, is one of the cus- tomary role types in Yuan drama.' According to the Qinglouji (The Green Bower Collection), a valuable collection of short biograph- ical notes on performers in the Yuan dynasty compiled around 1364, jiatou is one of the waijiao (extra roles) in zaju besides the fe- male and male lead roles, clan (female) and mo (male): [These extra role types] include the jiatou, the beauty pining in her boudoir, the bawd, the coquettish young girl, the high official, the poor, the brigand, the government servant, and those categories concerning immortals and Taoist deliver- ance, and family matters.'- The term "jiatou" originally referred to the throne of the emperor which an old eunuch would carry in front of the emperor's carriage on an imperial tour of inspection.' Since jiatou was an important insignia of an imperial tour, the modern Chinese scholar Sun Kaidi suggests that the term "jiatou zaju" must therefore involve at least a certain scene of the emperor going out in a carriage, as found in Act Three of both Hangong qiu (Autumn in the Palace of Han) and Tian Yuan Tan, "Prohibition of Jiatou Zaju in the Ming Dynasty and the Portrayal of the Emperor on Stage," MING STUDIES, 49, pp. -
No Later Than the First Half of the Sixteenth Century, the Story About
wolf of zhongshan tian yuan tan The Wolf of Zhongshan and Ingrates: Problematic Literary Contexts in Sixteenth-Century China o later than the first half of the sixteenth century, the story about N an ungrateful wolf captured the interests and attention of Chinese writers and readers. It offers the following scenario: a wolf, on the run from pursuing hunters in the Zhongshan խ՞ area of the kingdom of Zhao, asks a traveling scholar named Master Dongguo ࣟພ to be hid in the scholar’s book bag. After the hunters have left, the scholar lets the wolf out of the bag. However, as soon as it is safely free, the wolf wants to eat the scholar. The scholar protests and suggests that they should submit their quarrel to the judgment of the first three elders that they meet on the road. They first encounter an ancient apricot tree and an old ox, Both agree that the scholar should be eaten, because their own pitiful experience with their masters has shown them that men are in- deed the most ungrateful of all. Next, they meet an elderly man who, after listening to both sides of the story, demands that the wolf prove it can fit into the bag, so that the elderly man can see for himself what happened. The wolf agrees, but as soon as it is tied up and put into the bag as before, the elderly man instructs the scholar to kill the wolf, thereby saving his life. As pointed out by Zheng Zhenduo ᔤ (1898–1958), this story is the Chinese version of a folk tale about an ungrateful creature that has been very popular in many other Asian and European literary tradi- tions.1 For centuries, this story has appeared in multiple literary forms such as classical tales, drama, and illustrations in the Chinese tradition. -

When I was searching the resources for my thesis Nora’s rewriting in China(1914-1948), by accident the website of Ibsen Center jumped out. Then I came to Norway and studied at Ibsen Center. Whether in Norway or in China, many people asked me why I had chosen Ibsen studies and had come to Norway. I always said because I liked Ibsen’s plays and Norway has an Ibsen Center. It turned out that I had chosen correctly. At the Ibsen Center, professors and students from all over the world gave me lots of chances to access different ideas and insights into Ibsen studies, especially from theatre and performance aspects. I could access the original Ibsen’s texts and understand Norwegian society in Ibsen’s times, and I could watch Ibsen’s performances from different countries either in the National Theatre or through DVDs in class. Thanks to Ibsen Center for giving me the opportunity to study here, and I also want to show my appreciation for all the professors at the Ibsen Center: especially Frode Helland, Astrid Sæther, Jon Nygaard, Atle Kittang, Erika Fischer-Lichte and Nilu Kamaluddin, Julie Holledge, Knut Brynhildsvoll, who gave me the latest information about Ibsen studies through lectures and seminars. Article Xiuzhen (Immortality Cultivation) Fantasy: Science, Religion, and the Novels of Magic/Superstition in Contemporary China Zhange Ni Department of Religion and Culture, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA 24061, USA; [email protected] Received: 11 October 2019; Accepted: 22 December 2019; Published: 2 January 2020 Abstract: In early twenty-first-century China, online fantasy is one of the most popular literary genres. This article studies a subgenre of Chinese fantasy named xiuzhen 修真 (immortality cultivation), which draws on Daoist alchemy in particular and Chinese religion and culture in general, especially that which was negatively labelled “superstitious” in the twentieth century, to tell exciting adventure stories. Xiuzhen fantasy is indebted to wuxia xiaoshuo 武俠小說 (martial arts novels), the first emergence of Chinese fantasy in the early twentieth century after the translation of the modern Western discourses of science, religion, and superstition. Although martial arts fiction was suppressed by the modernizing nation-state because it contained the unwanted elements of magic and supernaturalism, its reemergence in the late twentieth century paved the way for the rise of its successor, xiuzhen fantasy. As a type of magical arts fiction, xiuzhen reinvents Daoist alchemy and other “superstitious” practices to build a cultivation world which does not escape but engages with the dazzling reality of digital technology, neoliberal governance, and global capitalism. In this fantastic world, the divide of magic and science breaks down; religion, defined not by faith but embodied practice, serves as the organizing center of society, economy, and politics. Moreover, the subject of martial arts fiction that challenged the sovereignty of the nation-state has evolved into the neoliberal homo economicus and its non-/anti-capitalist alternatives.
