AGARDH FROM THE SLOVENIAN COAST (GULF OF TRIESTE, NORTHERN ADRIATIC) Claudio BATTELLI Ulica Sergeja Mašere 5, SI 6000 Koper, Slovenia e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT At the end of 2010, a signifi cant decline in populations of Fucus virsoides was observed in the Slovenian coast (Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic), which prompted the undertaking of a direct observation assessment of changes in the occurrence of these populations along the Slovenian coast over the period 2010–2015. The paper presents a comparison between historical and current data on the presence of F. virsoides along the Slovenian coast, gathered through in situ surveys and from literature, and proposes the possible causes that have led to the decline and disap- pearance of F. virsoides populations along the Slovenian coastline. Key words: Fucus virsoides, occurrence, disappearance, Slovenian coast, northern Adriatic SCOMPARSA DI FUCUS VIRSOIDES J. Nella nota vengono riportati i risultati di uno studio sulla distribuzio- ne di F. virsoides lungo la costa della Slovenia nel periodo 2010–2015, attraverso l’osservazione diretta. A visionary and tough decision by those who have made the environment their resource and will project Abruzzo into a major and leading role in “green tourism”. Overall most of this legacy – but not all – is to be found in the mountains, where the landscapes and ecosystems change according to altitude, shifting from typically Mediterranean milieus to outright alpine scenarios, with mugo pine groves and high-altitude steppe. Of all the Apennine regions, Abruzzo is distinctive for its prevalently mountainous nature, with two thirds of its territory found at over 750 metres in altitude. This is due to the unique way that the Apennine develops in its central section, where it continues to proceed along the peninsula’s

THE SANGRO VALLEY RESEARCH PROJECT (ABRUZZO): EXCAVATION AND RESEARCH AT COLLE SANT’IANNI (VILLETTA BARREA, PESCASSEROLI), 1997-2000 The ‘Sangro Valley Research Project’ was initiated in 1994, organised and in part directed by Prof. John Lloyd† (Istitute of Archaeology, University of Oxford) who sadly died in 1999. It was co-ordinated with the British School at Rome who offered financial and material support, and further funds were provided by the British Academy, The Roman Society, and the Craven Committee. The basic scope of the Project was to analyse the settlement and landscape sequence of different zones of the broad valley of the river Sangro in the Abruzzo region of east central Italy spanning the periods from early prehistory to the medieval epoch. The Project featured a wide methodology, combining field/surface landscape archaeology, geomorphological analysis, excavation, GIS, and ethnographic research). A detailed account of the aims, methods and initial results from the 1994-95 seasons was published in 1997 (Lloyd, Lock & Christie 1997). There were two distinct zones that formed the focus to this landscape project: 1) The site and territory of Monte Pallano, a late Iron Age or Samnite hillfort/town or oppidum in the middle valley, where excavations by the Soprintendenza Archeologica per l’Abruzzo had already identified various levels of consistent settlement and religious activity extending fully into the second century AD; our Project contributed to the archaeology of this settlement and aimed to locate Monte Pallano into

Historia naturalis bulgarica, 22: 45-71, 2015 Invertebrate Animals (Metazoa: Invertebrata) of the Atanasovsko Lake, Bulgaria Zdravko Hubenov, Lyubomir Kenderov, Ivan Pandourski Abstract: The role of the Atanasovsko Lake for storage and protection of the specific faunistic diversity, characteristic of the hyper-saline lakes of the Bulgarian seaside is presented. The fauna of the lake and surrounding waters is reviewed, the taxonomic diversity and some zoogeographical and ecological features of the invertebrates are analyzed. The lake system includes from freshwater to hyper-saline basins with fast changing environment. A total of 6 types, 10 classes, 35 orders, 82 families and 157 species are known from the Atanasovsko Lake and the surrounding basins. They include 56 species (35.7%) marine and marine-brackish forms and 101 species (64.3%) brackish-freshwater, freshwater and terrestrial forms, connected with water. For the first time, 23 species in this study are established (12 marine, 1 brackish and 10 freshwater). The marine and marine- brackish species have 4 types of ranges – Cosmopolitan, Atlantic-Indian, Atlantic-Pacific and Atlantic. The Atlantic (66.1%) and Cosmopolitan (23.2%) ranges that include 80% of the species, predominate. Most of the fauna (over 60%) has an Atlantic-Mediterranean origin and represents an impoverished Atlantic-Mediterranean fauna. The freshwater-brackish, freshwater and terrestrial forms, connected with water, that have been established from the Atanasovsko Lake, have 2 main types of ranges – species, distributed in the Palaearctic and beyond it and species, distributed only in the Palaearctic. The representatives of the first type (52.4%) predomi- nate. They are related to the typical marine coastal habitats, optimal for the development of certain species.

  • Cities Call for a More Sustainable and Equitable European Future
Cities call for a more sustainable and equitable European future An open letter to the European Council and its Member States Tuesday 30th April 2019, President of the European Council, Heads of States and Governments of the European Union Member States, We, the undersigned mayors and heads of local governments have come together to urge the Heads of States and Governments of the Member States to commit the European Union (EU) and all European institutions to a long-term climate strategy with the objective of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 – when they meet at the Future of Europe conference in Sibiu, Romania on 9 May, 2019. The urgency of the climate crisis requires immediate action, stepping up our climate ambition and pursuing every effort to keep global temperature rise below 1.5C by mid-century, as evidenced by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5C. Current energy and climate policies in place globally, set the planet on a global warming pathway of 3°C. We are reminded of the inadequacy of our response to climate change, by the thousands of young people demonstrating each week on the streets of European cities - and around the world. We cannot let the status quo jeopardise their future and those of millions of European citizens. We owe it to the next generation to make more ambitious commitments to address climate change at all levels of government and in every aspect of European policy-making. We acknowledge and support the positions of the European Parliament and of the Commission to pursue net-zero emissions as the only viable option for the future of Europe and the world.

The keys cover 127 taxa, most of them identi¢ed to genus and species level. These keys were mainly constructed upon external morphological characters, which are easy to observe under a stereo- microscope.
