The region comprises of nine administrative zones which in terms of livelihoods are categorised into 17 livelihood zones. The climate is mostly arid/semi-arid in lowland areas and cooler/wetter in the higher areas. Annual rainfall ranges from 150 - ~600mm per year. The region can be divided into two broader rainfall regimes based on the seasons of the year: Siti and Fafan zones to the north, and the remaining seven zones to the south. The rainfall pattern for both is bimodal but the timings differ slightly. The southern seven zones (Nogob, Jarar, Korahe, Doollo, Shabelle, Afder, Liban and Harshin District of Fafan Zone) receive ‘Gu’ rains (main season) from mid April to end of June, and secondary rains known as ‘Deyr’ from early October to late December. In the north, Siti and Fafan zones excluding Harshin of Fafan zone receive ‘Dirra’ - Objectives of the assessment also known as ‘Gu’ rains from late March To evaluate the outcome of the Deyr/Karan to late May.

    DRMTechnical Periodic Monitoring Report Working 2016 Humanitarian Requirements Document – Ethiopia Group Covering 1 Jan to 31 Dec 2016 Prepared by Clusters and NDRMC Introduction The El Niño global climactic event significantly affected the 2015 meher/summer rains on the heels of failed belg/ spring rains in 2015, driving food insecurity, malnutrition and serious water shortages in many parts of the country. The Government and humanitarian partners issued a joint 2016 Humanitarian Requirements Document (HRD) in December 2015 requesting US$1.4 billion to assist 10.2 million people with food, health and nutrition, water, agriculture, shelter and non-food items, protection and emergency education responses. Following the delay and erratic performance of the belg/spring rains in 2016, a Prioritization Statement was issued in May 2016 with updated humanitarian requirements in nutrition (MAM), agriculture, shelter and non-food items and education.The Mid-Year Review of the HRD identified 9.7 million beneficiaries and updated the funding requirements to $1.2 billion. The 2016 HRD is 69 per cent funded, with contributions of $1.08 billion from international donors and the Government of Ethiopia (including carry-over resources from 2015). Under the leadership of the Government of Ethiopia delivery of life-saving and life- sustaining humanitarian assistance continues across the sectors. However, effective humanitarian response was challenged by shortage of resources, limited logistical capacities and associated delays, and weak real-time information management. This Periodic Monitoring Report (PMR) provides a summary of the cluster financial inputs against outputs and achievements against cluster objectives using secured funding since the launch of the 2016 HRD.

    Research and evidence to inform CRRF programming and policy in Ethiopia Displacement-affected communities and the CRRF in Somali region: the role of research Jigjiga University-ReDSS-UNHCR World Refugee Week 2021 Evidence Seminar June 15th 9am-12pm EAT Key Takeaways Introduction Discussions related to the CRRF process in Ethiopia frequently centre on the developments in the Somali Regional State (SRS) as a good example of where the CRRF process has progressed compared to other refugee-hosting regions in the country. Through government leadership and in partnership with UNHCR, coordination structures have been established and made operational at regional and woreda administration levels. Accordingly, the region has been an area of significant focus and progress in advancing the CRRF/GCR agenda in Ethiopia. In short, it is understood to be, as the Head of the UNHCR Sub-Office in Jigjiga stated during the seminar, the ‘poster child’ of the CRRF approach in the country. Meanwhile, the Regional Durable Solutions Secretariat (ReDSS) has worked through a partnership with UNHCR to support CRRF coordination in SRS, while also hosting a series of discussions aimed at using research and evidence to inform CRRF programming and policy in Ethiopia. It is within this context that the seminar was conducted in Jigjiga. The seminar, co-organized by UNHCR, Jigjiga University, and ReDSS, was conducted within the general umbrella of commemorating this year’s World Refugee Week in Ethiopia, with Together We Heal, Learn and Shine as its motto. Thus, this seminar aimed at sharing research findings and facilitate discussion with key stakeholders focused on the forced displacement response in the region.

    Ethiopia Country Office Food Security Update 24 February 2009 T WFP E thiopia Ove rview/ Hig hlights Hea lth and Nu trition M arket W eather, Re fugees And conflict Overview/ Harvest Prospects and Food Security: Harvesting and threshing of Meher crops have been H i g h l i g h t s completed in most parts of the country. The CFSAM phase 1 report of January 2009 forecasted that cereal and pulse production from the meher 2008 season at 17.44 million tonnes, about 10 percent above the previous year’s post-harvest estimates. This is the fifth consecutive good meher production. Despite the CFSAM estimate of a cereal deficit of 316,000 mt. However, food insecurity at household exists and the Government led multi agency needs assessment estimated that 4.9 million people are in need of emergency assistance up and above the 7.5 million people that benefit from the Productive Safety Net Programme (PSNP). Land preperation for the Belg crops (February to June) in the Belg growing areas that include the high and midlands of Dawuro, Sidama and Gedeo zones of SNNPR; the eastern part that include North Shewa and North Issues of Wollo of Amhara region; Raya Azebo, Alamata, and Enda Mokoni woredas of Tigray region; highlands of Bale and lowlands of West Arsi zones of Oromiya region. In Somali region, farmers in Jijiga zone, particularly Jijiga, Foc us Awbare and Gursum woredas were harvesting and threshing meher crops that are reported to have performed poorly. Malnutrition: Acute malnutrition rates have continued to decline country-wide attributed mainly to improved food access from the new harvest as well as the impact of interventions of the various food security programs.
