Download This SARAH SMITH Uncovering. Exposing. Revealing. For Sarah Smith, the time has come to say more, show more, and share an even deeper truth with her fans, courtesy of her brand new album, Unveiling. Sarah has always been vulnerable in her songwriting – she doesn’t know how to do it any other way. Unveiling takes that openness to a deeply personal new level as Sarah sings about love, loss, and having the courage to trust in her own voice. Unveiling is Sarah’s fifth studio album, following A Christmas Wish (2018), 11 (2016), The Journey (2014), and Stronger Now (2012). She also released her live album Live In Concert in 2018, and the live DVD Sarah Smith: Plugged and Unplugged in 2015. In addition to her full-length albums, she regularly releases stand-alone singles and music videos. Recorded at London, Ontario’s EMAC Studios and Second Records in St. Thomas, Ontario, Unveiling is unmistakeably a pop/rock album. The 15 tracks draw on Sarah’s ‘90s rock influences and once again display her characteristic knack for writing hooks and singalong melodies. From the infectious ‘Beautiful Disaster’ and ‘Divine Intervention’ to the hard driving ‘You Don’t Get My Love’ and the haunting ballad ‘The Hider,’ the record is Sarah and her band pushing from a harder foundation, digging deeper and unleashing intense, pent-up emotions. As Sarah says in the album liner notes, the songs are about opening yourself to a new future, and believing that the right road lies ahead. It’s a truth she’s come to know the hard way through years of spiritual and musical development. Music is Sarah’s full-time passion. She continues to tour prolifically, playing around 300 dates per year in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Along the way, she has shared the stage with artists including Carole Pope, Sass Jordan, Biff Naked, Emm Gryner, Joel Plaskett, David Wilcox, 54-40 and many others. Whether it’s just her and her acoustic guitar or her full band, she is simply a mesmerizing performer. She has also recently begun to play in the Caribbean, and has performed in musical stage productions at Petrolia Playhouse Theatre – challenges that have broadened her stage presence and songwriting acumen. Her social activism includes playing shows and sharing her story in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Addictions Services of Thames Valley, My Sister’s Place, Anova, and Vanier Children’s Services. Sarah has won many awards throughout her career. She was named Best Adult Contemporary Artist at the Toronto Independent Music Awards, and has earned multiple honours at the Jack Richardson/Forest City London Music Awards, including the Rock and Singer/Songwriter awards. With Unveiling now available, Sarah is looking forward to what comes next, trusting that her music will take her and her listeners where they need to go. • Art to Commerce: the Trajectory of Popular Music Criticism
Art to Commerce: The Trajectory of Popular Music Criticism Thomas Conner and Steve Jones University of Illinois at Chicago [email protected] / [email protected] Abstract This article reports the results of a content and textual analysis of popular music criticism from the 1960s to the 2000s to discern the extent to which criticism has shifted focus from matters of music to matters of business. In part, we believe such a shift to be due likely to increased awareness among journalists and fans of the industrial nature of popular music production, distribution and consumption, and to the disruption of the music industry that began in the late 1990s with the widespread use of the Internet for file sharing. Searching and sorting the Rock’s Backpages database of over 22,000 pieces of music journalism for keywords associated with the business, economics and commercial aspects of popular music, we found several periods during which popular music criticism’s focus on business-related concerns seemed to have increased. The article discusses possible reasons for the increases as well as methods for analyzing a large corpus of popular music criticism texts. Keywords: music journalism, popular music criticism, rock criticism, Rock’s Backpages Though scant scholarship directly addresses this subject, music journalists and bloggers have identified a trend in recent years toward commerce-specific framing when writing about artists, recording and performance. Most music journalists, according to Willoughby (2011), “are writing quasi shareholder reports that chart the movements of artists’ commercial careers” instead of artistic criticism. While there may be many reasons for such a trend, such as the Internet’s rise to prominence not only as a medium for distribution of music but also as a medium for distribution of information about music, might it be possible to discern such a trend? Our goal with the research reported here was an attempt to empirically determine whether such a trend exists and, if so, the extent to which it does.

  • One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and Their Fans
One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Annie Lyons TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin December 2020 __________________________________________ Renita Coleman Department of Journalism Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Hannah Lewis Department of Musicology Second Reader 2 ABSTRACT Author: Annie Lyons Title: One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Supervising Professors: Renita Coleman, Ph.D. Hannah Lewis, Ph.D. Boy bands have long been disparaged in music journalism settings, largely in part to their close association with hordes of screaming teenage and prepubescent girls. As rock journalism evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, so did two dismissive and misogynistic stereotypes about female fans: groupies and teenyboppers (Coates, 2003). While groupies were scorned in rock circles for their perceived hypersexuality, teenyboppers, who we can consider an umbrella term including boy band fanbases, were defined by a lack of sexuality and viewed as shallow, immature and prone to hysteria, and ridiculed as hall markers of bad taste, despite being driving forces in commercial markets (Ewens, 2020; Sherman, 2020). Similarly, boy bands have been disdained for their perceived femininity and viewed as inauthentic compared to “real” artists— namely, hypermasculine male rock artists. While the boy band genre has evolved and experienced different eras, depictions of both the bands and their fans have stagnated in media, relying on these old stereotypes (Duffett, 2012). This paper aimed to investigate to what extent modern boy bands are portrayed differently from non-boy bands in music journalism through a quantitative content analysis coding articles for certain tropes and themes.

  • A Sociological Analysis of Christian Contemporary Music and Aural Piety
“FAITH COMES BY HEARING”: A SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF CHRISTIAN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC AND AURAL PIETY __________________________________________________________________ A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board __________________________________________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Courtney Sorrell Tepera August 2017 Examining Committee Members: Lucy Bregman, Advisory Chair, TU Department of Religion Terry Rey, TU Department of Religion David Harrington Watt, TU Department of History Dustin Kidd, External Member, TU Department of Sociology © Copyright 2017 by Courtney Suzanne Sorrell Tepera ____________________________ All rights reserved iii ABSTRACT Over the past fifty years, Christian contemporary music has joined hymnody and psalmody as a major form of evangelical liturgical and devotional song. While the production and content of this genre have been explored by scholars, few studies have attended to the devotional use of the genre and its role in shaping the religious lives of American evangelicals. This project draws from several sets of data to address this matter: analysis of church-created worship music albums, listener testimonials on Christian radio websites, and focus group interviews of laity and clergy at four South Carolina churches. The data revealed that music is significant to their religious lives outside of church as a means of encountering God, managing emotions, and displaying spiritual capital. Inside churches, the music is used to create a sense of corporate identity that reinforces social bonds within the community and attracts newcomers. Drawing on the methodological framework of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice and his work on social distinction, I argue that American evangelicals who listen to Christian contemporary music are engaged in aural piety, a set of practices, attitudes, and ideas invested in music that structure and evoke the experience of the sacred.

MUSICAL PREFERENCES, PERSONALITY TRAITS AND SPOTIFY FEATURES Sem Kaylee Dekkers 10555943 University of Amsterdam Master of Arts: Thesis 0 th 15 August J.A. Burgoyne Introduction I like to think I present an innocuous, well-socialized face to the world – nothing for anyone to worry about. But if you know that I like [alternative music] then you know a little something else about me. You've gotten a new data point. If you have all of my songs, the points coalesce to form a picture, an intimate one that doesn't quite match the public persona (Schwarz, 2004).1 Music is everywhere around us. If we walk into our local grocers, shops, gym, when we turn on our radio during a car ride, even when we pay a visit to our dentist. In short, music is a ubiquitous phenomenon. One common use of music in today's society is enjoyment and aesthetic appreciation (Kohut & Levarie, 1950). Music is also the center of many social activities, concerts, dancing, singing such as choirs, and even in most social gatherings. Music may not always be the primary focus, but it is certainly an essential component – for example, try to imagine Christmas Eve without Christmas carols. Another common use is music's ability to inspire dance and physical movement (Dwyer, 1995; Large, 2000; Ronström, 1999). Music also satisfys a number of needs beyond social context; a personal music selection can serve as a tool to shape their physical and social environments to reinforce their dispositions and self-views (Buss, 1987; Gosling, Ko, Mannarelli, & Morris, 2002; Snyder & Ickers,
