His first film, O SANGUE (BLOOD), had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 1989. CASA DE LAVA, his second feature, shot in Cabo Verde, was shown in Cannes, Un Certain Regard, in 1994. His other features include BONES, IN VANDA’S ROOM, and COLLOSAL YOUTH (currently available in the US as a box set from the Criterion Collection), NE CHANGE RIEN, and WHERE DOES YOUR HIDDEN SMILE LIE?, a documentary on the work of Daniele Huillet and Jean‐Marie Straub. Recently he directed the SWEET EXORCIST, a segment of the omnibus feature CENTRO HISTORICO with Manoel de Oliveira, Aki Kaurismaki and Victor Erice.

    A Review of Horse Money [Cavalo Dinheiro], directed by Pedro Costa (Portugal, 2014). Ivan Cerecina University of Sydney Even among the diverse field of entries at the 2015 Melbourne International Film Festival, Horse Money remained a unique propo- sition. Although director Pedro Costa has made no secret of his key influences over the years, Horse Money strikes one as a film that shows the director working through a very personal set of aesthetic and phil- osophical preoccupations.1 While those who have followed Costa’s filmography in recent years will note the many continuities between Horse Money and the Portuguese director’s previous films (both in terms of casting and the broad subjects his films tackle), Horse Money also signals a few key departures from the director’s previous work, testifying to the evolving nature of his artistic vision. Given Horse Money’s inventiveness, it is worth reflecting on Cos- ta’s career in order to better understand what is distinctive about this new work and the fresh challenges it poses to viewers familiar with the director’s oeuvre. Often, as inIn Vanda’s Room (2000), Costa’s technological and aesthetic approaches have been closely interrelated; there, we saw the convergence of a more intimate attitude towards representing others that was made possible by the artisanal, low-budget production model of early digital filmmaking.2 It was before the 2000s, however, that Costa confirmed his cinephile credentials in his first two features,O Sangue (1989) and Casa de Lava (1995).

The new technology, which by now has become standard for moving images of any kind, has put into question existing assumptions and created paradoxes from a continuity between two different media that are, however, thought of as one medium. I address that problem from the perspective of surrealist film theory, which insisted on paradoxes and saw cinema as an art form that necessarily operated on contradictions: a quality that resonated with surrealism’s general aesthetic theory. To support my argument, I then analyze in some depth three contemporary works of cinema that possess surrealist attributes and employed digital technology in their making in a self-conscious way. Leos Carax’s Holy Motors, Pedro Costa’s Horse Money, and Seances by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson all point to specific contradictions revealed by digital technology that they resolve, or hold in tension, in accordance with the surrealist notion of point sublime.

El grupo crece cada vez más y entre quienes hemos continuado este proceso interminable de organizar edición tras edición seguimos aprendiendo juntos. Personalmente esta edición se la dedico a ellas y ellos, pero grupalmente se la dedicamos a ustedes, que nos regalan el invalorable sentido de hacer un evento que intervenga la esfera pública con tantas buenas intenciones como ganas de retarlos cinematográ!camente. Un festival de cine contemporáneo hecho en el Perú, pero también un festival de cine peruano: nuevo, arriesga- do, que late y abre nuevas posibilidades narrativas. Ahora estamos tan contentos como aliviados. Gracias a un premio multianu- al del Ministerio de Cultura del Perú hemos asegurado nuestra continuidad hasta el 2021 y prometemos seguir haciendo Transcinema hasta que el cine más audaz y libre sea visto entre nosotros como de rebelde rutina. Sí, un nuevo cine es posible. Otro agradecimiento enorme al Centro Cultural de España en Lima que se ofreció a alojarnos como sede principal y espacio cotidiano para convivir y crear. También a la sala elgalpon.transcinema donde están todos invitados a construir comunidad cinematográ!ca barrial (Pueblo Libre) a partir de estos días. Epistolarity in cinema is commonly understood as a narrative device either fitting the so- called essay film, or resulting from filmic adaptation of literary works. A more nuanced understanding of the workings of this device is observed in films of disparate contemporary Portuguese filmmakers which adapt, rephrase and remediate letters. This article centres its attention on possible tendencies concerning epistolarity in this context, examining films that make use of the personal archive and epistolary voice, or that adapt letters to screen. It also examines filmic works that use the epistolary device to negotiate between emotional expression and historical materiality. Among others, this article discusses films such as Yama No Anata (Aya Koretzy, 2011), Correspondences (Rita Azevedo Gomes, 2016), Letters from War (Ivo M. Ferreira, 2016) and works directed by Pedro Costa and Miguel Gomes. Artist spotlight : Pedro Costa Ryland Walker Knight, 2009 PEDRO COSTA has made digital works since the turn of the 21st Century due to a number of influences and philosophical premises. Through his 1997 film, Ossos (Bones), Costa shot on film and perfected a style of shadow and elision equal parts Bresson, Rivette, Ford and Tourneur. After working in the Lisbon slums of Fountainhas while filming Ossos, Costa realized the inefficiency and intrusion of a 35mm camera crew, no matter their limited size/footprint. He realized that to work with any grace, any honesty, any integrity, he would have to abandon the troupe of filmmaking. Thus he forsake film‘s emulsion for digital‘s arrayed pinholes of light and began to shoot his next film, No Quarto da Vanda (In Vanda’s Room), by himself with a ―consumer-grade‖ camera. This was not simply a democratic, or even simply a Marxist, impulse. It‘s more complicated, more radical. His new art—in and of the margins—gives face to the mosaic of poverty too rarely seen on cinema screens. It builds the world in blocks of time and space into a concrete object of witness.

    Notes on a Certain Trend in Portuguese Cinema ANTÓNIO PRETO Escola Superior Artística do Porto Centro de Estudos Arnaldo Araújo Abstract: The present essay examines how contemporary Portuguese cinema critically dialogues with the historical representations upon which mythical images of Portugal have been founded. Analyzing films by Manoel de Oliveira, Pedro Costa, and Miguel Gomes, the essay highlights how these filmmakers problematize, within a postcolonial perspective, the political sense of understanding modernity as a crisis of identity. Keywords: History; identity; postcolonialism; Manoel de Oliveira; Miguel Gomes; Pedro Costa Contemporary Portuguese cinema—let us say, over the last four decades—is haunted by Portugal’s history.1 Reinventing the legacy of nineteenth-century literary Romanticism, many filmmakers have engaged in questioning the most grandiloquent representations of the country’s past, whether by dismantling the hyperbolic national identity forged by the Estado Novo, or by constructively challenging those images and discourses that have attempted to break with the dictates of Salazar’s historical propaganda. In both cases, it is not about opposing historical rupture to historical continuity; nor is it simply about demolishing the national mythology to erect, upon its ruins, flags of an inverted and pacifying counter-mythology that is deemed more appropriate, if not wholly acceptable and politically laundered.
