Editors’ Column Volume 33 marks a major transition for Oral Tradition. After thirty-two fruitful years at the University of Missouri, the journal has now found a new home at Harvard University. In the “Editor’s Column” that prefaced the first issue of Oral Tradition in 1986, John Miles Foley justified the creation of the new journal by speaking of the need for a periodical “devoted exclusively to the study of oral tradition in its many forms,” one which would “inform specialists of parallel developments in their own and different areas” and “build and maintain bridges among disciplines in order to promote the healthy growth of the field as a whole.” Thirty-three years after its inception, one can say not only that the journal created by John Foley has lived up to the goals of its founder, having done much to promote the growth of the field, but also that the need for such a clearing-house and meeting-place remains as keenly felt as ever. We and our colleagues who have helped find a new home for Oral Tradition are proud to have secured what we hope will be an equally fruitful future for the journal at Harvard. A transition of this scale presents many challenges. The biggest challenge we have faced has been the building of a new online platform for the delivery of the journal. The new website has a substantially different design from the one with which long-time readers are familiar, but it retains most of the essential features of the former website. Most importantly, all of the journal’s back issues, including their eCompanions, remain freely available. There have been other challenges as well: practices that had become routine for the journal’s former stewards had to be re-learned or re-imagined, a new cover was designed, and a new editor had to find his footing. As a consequence of the effort required to meet these challenges, there has been an unavoidable delay in the publication of this latest issue, which we have designated as Issue 1 of Volume 33, even though the next issue, in 2020, will belong to Volume 34. Going forward, we anticipate publishing only one regular issue each year, reserving the second issue for special, guest-edited issues (for which we are happy to entertain proposals). The present issue contains five essays that illustrate individually the vitality of the study of oral tradition, and collectively its scope. The issue opens with an essay on the Dead Sea Scrolls by Shem Miller, who demonstrates the power of John Miles Foley’s methodology to recover traces of oral performance even from texts of the distant past. Timothy Thurston, applying related methodologies to contemporary Tibetan wedding speeches, explores ways in which auspiciousness can be created in performance by forms of traditional referentiality. There follows a sequence of three essays, each of which engages with the legacy of Milman Parry, the Harvard scholar whose work on Homeric poetry and South Slavic epic song laid the foundation for so much contemporary research on oral traditions. Texts collected by Parry in the former Yugoslavia provide the primary evidence for Milan Vidaković, who examines the quasi-magical power of questions—an otherwise unassuming class of utterances—to assert power over others. Richard Hughes Gibson assesses the effect of Parry’s ideas about Homeric style on the translation of the Homeric poems into English. Finally, Steve Reece considers accounts of Parry’s own life and tragic death as instances of a contemporary oral-and-written tradition, which he tests against documentary evidence. It seems fitting that the first issue of Oral Tradition published from its new home at Harvard should include these explorations of aspects of Parry’s legacy. The coming of Oral Tradition to Harvard, which is also the home of the Milman Parry Collection of Oral Literature, has something of the feel of a family reunion. It is a reunion, however, that is not without a twinge of regret for the fact that the journal has had to leave an institution that for so long supported its growth and enabled it flourish. It is our hope that the move to Harvard will enable the journal to continue to grow and flourish. With the support of you, our readers, we are certain that it will. David F. John Zemke Oral Tradition, 33/1 (2019):3-22 Oral Tradition and the Dead Sea Scrolls Shem Miller The Dead Sea Scrolls are a cache of ancient manuscripts written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek discovered in eleven caves from 1947-1956. Most scholars associate the Dead Sea Scrolls with an ancient Jewish community who lived in a complex of ruins on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea known as Khirbet Qumran. Early on scholars identified this “Qumran Community” with the Essenes, a well-known Jewish group discussed by Philo, Josephus, and Pliny the Elder. As pointed out by Géza Vermes, the significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls is due to their great antiquity compared with our previously oldest copies of biblical books: “Before 1947, the oldest Hebrew

    NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES • VOLUME 3 NUMBER 2 • APRIL 1982 Humanities Art, the essential historian BY JOHN CANADAY I would like to know, sometime, why some people are spontaneously attracted to art—the visual arts especially— while others who have been conditioned by apparently the same circumstances are left either cold or puzzled by some­ thing that has interested me as far back as 1 can remember, fascinated me since adolescence, and enriched my adult life beyond measure—with no explanation that I can reach as to why it happened. In our close-knit family of eight, books were plentiful (my father's shelf included Dante, Samuel Johnson, and George Meredith) and our Kimball upright piano was subjected to constant abuse. But until 1 began bringing pictures into the house there were almost none, except for family photo­ graphs, on the walls. The only ones I can remember were a chromo of a German mountain scene with peasants (which 1 recognize in retrospect as having been in the manner of Ferdinand Waldmixller), a reproduction of an early Taos painting showing an Indian dipping water from a stream, and a tinted mezzotint of Gainsborough's Duchess of Devonshire, none of which explains why as a teen-ager I developed a passion for Holbein drawings without ever having been inside an art museum or having seen, so far as I can remember, any art books. I have no idea why, how, or exactly when this first love was generated, but I do know that art from that time until now has been an increasingly potent form of communication with the past and an enlarge­ ment of the world around me.

Rose Miriam Lisa Chalklen 2019 ii ABSTRACT Though there has been much scholarship on various aspects of death and the afterlife in ancient Greece, there has been little attempt to view the evidence in the context of the afterlife journey as a composite whole. This thesis aims to present a comprehensive study on different aspects of ancient Greek eschatology in the context of the afterlife journey, in order to reconstruct the process of the transition. This is achieved by investigating the eschatological themes and motifs which are reflected in ancient Greek literature, iconography, and archaeological remains. The text is loosely structured on a traveller’s ‘guide’, which consists of three basic stages of the afterlife journey: preparation, transit, and arrival. Chapter One outlines the actions undertaken in preparation for the soul’s journey to the afterlife, primarily regarding the performance of proper burial rites, which were imagined in early times to directly affect the soul’s incorporation into Hades, but by the Classical period were no longer necessary for entry into the afterlife. Still, certain practices, such as the provision of grave goods, did facilitate the soul’s journey to a certain extent.

    American School of Classical Newsetter Studies at Athens Summer1984 80th Birthday Party for Sterling Dow On January 17, 1984, friends and former students of Sterling Dow gathered at the Tavern Club in Boston to celebrate his 80th birthday. Before the cocktail hour, Dow gave a lecture on Homer relating mainly to the authorship of the Odyssey. In part the an­ swer to the question was determined on the basis of the extent of Homer's knowl­ edge. To suggest the range of that knowl­ edge, Dow produced the skull of a horse, demonstrating persuasively that there is an opening, precisely where Homer said it was, through which an arrow could have entered the brain of Nestor's horse in Book VIII of the Iliad. •struck at the point of the head, where the utmost hairs of horses are grown along the skull, and which is a place most mortal," (R. Lattimore trans.). During cocktails (including ouzo!), Dow received a telephone call from an octet of well-wishers in Athens. A large Greek goat-bell summoned the company up to dinner, where their teacher presented his Sterling Dow with two of his former students, Hunter Lewis and Jim McCredie Ph.D.'s with gold-plated replicas of the Vapheio cups. EMILY VERMEULE Born: August 11, 1928 Died: February 6, 2001 Emily Dickinson Townsend Vermeule, scholar of classical Greek literature and Aegean art and archaeology, was the Samuel Zemurray Jr. and Doris Zemurray-Stone Radcliffe Professor at Harvard from 1970 until her retirement in the spring of 1994, at which time she received Harvard’s Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize in the Humanities. She was born in New York City on the 11th of August, 1928, attended the Brearley School in that city, and graduated summa cum laude from Bryn Mawr College in 1950 with a degree in Greek and philosophy. She then spent a year at Oxford University, and went on to graduate degrees from Radcliffe College and Bryn Mawr, receiving the Ph.D. in Classics in 1956 with a dissertation on the poet Bacchylides. Emily was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1964-5, and of honorary degrees from a dozen institutions of higher learning, including Smith College, Princeton, Tufts, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Harvard. She was also elected a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy and the German Archaeological Institute. Of nimble wit and rapier sharp tongue, few could rival Emily in speed or depth of comprehension. To watch her scan a text, pencil tracing lines almost faster than one could follow, was a lesson in humility. Jointly appointed at Harvard in the Department of the Classics and in Fine Arts, now History of Art and Architecture, Emily’s pedagogical range was great.
