CHENGDU AIRLINES A-320 CAPTAINS Chengdu Airlines (CDA) had its maiden flight on 23 January, 2010 from its base in Chengdu, China. CDA is owned by three corporations: Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Sichuan Airlines Group and the Chengdu Communications Investment Group. CDA currently operates a fleet of 17 A-319/320 aircraft increasing to 20 by the end of 2015. CDA has 50 A- 320 aircraft on order over the next 5-10 years. Additionally, CDA has ordered 30 ARJ21 aircraft. CDA currently serves more than 50 domestic routes, including, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Shenzhen with planned expansion to Hong Kong, Macao and cities in East Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia. In March, Korean Air tops the global OTP chart. A total of 395,500 aircraft movements were handled by Chinese airlines, showing an increase of 3.04 percent year-over-year. Korean Air takes the top spot in the global OTP chart with an on-time arrival rate of 97.40 percent. Shandong Airlines and China Express Airlines become the most punctual Chinese large and medium-sized airlines in Asia-Pacific region respectively. Low Cost Carrier in China and Its Contribution to Passenger Traffic Flow YAHUA ZHANG ZHEN LU The gradual liberalisation of China’s air transport sector led to the launch of some new private airlines and low cost carriers (LCCs) in the mid-2000s. However, the large population and geographic market do not necessarily mean that a conducive environment is ensured for the growth of these new airlines. The domestic market is still dominated by the three state-owned carriers that have access to government aid whenever they are in trouble. Despite the less favourable environment, China’s only low cost carrier Spring Airlines has managed to grow and achieved limited success. The presence of Spring Airlines on a domestic route has contributed to an increase in passenger volume by 23%, holding other factors constant. This study also finds that when the jet fuel price increases by one dollar per gallon, the number of passengers carried will drop by 6%. The tourism and economic benefits brought about by LCCs should be the driving forces for the change in air transport policies in China. KEYWORDS. It has been found that three low-cost carriers (LCCs), namely, China’s Spring and India’s SpiceJet were the most efficient carriers during the period between 2008 and 2015. China’s three state- owned airlines performed poorly in both the capacity generation and service stages, particularly the latter. The second-stage regression results confirm that the LCC model and private ownership are significantly associated with better airline efficiency performance.
