History and Variants of the 996 Carrera MY1998 The 996 was introduced to the world at the Frankfurt Motor show in September 1997. It was a radical redesign of the 911 concept with a completely new body shell, and for the first time the engine was water cooled. Designers Pinky Lai and Harm Lagaay produced a svelte new form which was 30mm wider and 173mm longer than its predecessor, the 993. Structural stiffness of the new bodyshell was up by 45% in torsion, and 50% in flexure. Drag coefficient was down to 0.3 from 0.33, and the extra internal dimensions gave the car a roomier and luxurious feel. But it remained instantly recognisable as a 911. The 996 shared many components of the 986 Boxster, and the cars were visually virtually identical from the nose to the ‘A’ pillar. The car was much cheaper to produce than the 993, as a result of bringing in Japanese consultants to assist with production techniques. The engine was also the same basic design as the Boxster, albeit enlarged to 3.4 litres. Emission and noise regulations determined the unavoidable necessity for the new engine to be water cooled. The engine used four-valve technology with a new variocam system for adjusting the camshaft timing to produce an increase in torque and reduction of hydrocarbon emissions. The engine also featured what can only be described as a ‘semi-wet’ sump, as the oil reservoir was incorporated within the crankcase. Transmission was provided by either a manual 6-speed transmission manufactured by Getrag, or a 5-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox supplied by ZF. -

On the other hand, internal combustion engines were the dominant vehicle power source for more than a century, and they will continue to be used in most vehicles for decades to come; thus, it is necessary to employ advanced technologies to replace traditional mechanical systems with mechatronic systems to meet the ever-increasing demand of continuously improving engine efficiency with reduced emissions, where engine intake and the exhaust valve system represent key subsystems that affect the engine combustion efficiency and emissions. This paper reviews variable engine valve systems, including hydraulic and electrical variable valve timing systems, hydraulic multistep lift systems, continuously variable lift and timing valve systems, lost-motion systems, and electro-magnetic, electro-hydraulic, and electro-pneumatic variable valve actuation systems. Introduction With growing concerns on energy security and global warming, there are global efforts to develop more efficient vehicles with lower regulated emissions, including hybrid electrical vehicles, electrical vehicles, and fuel cell vehicles. Hybrid electrical vehicles became a significant part of vehicle production because of their overall efficiency, and they still pose a significant cost penalty, resulting in a stagnant market penetration of 3.2% and 2.7% in 2013 and 2018, respectively, in the United States (US), for example [1]. -

Michael Macht, who for many years served as head of pro- duction and logistics, has been made a member of the executive board of Porsche SE, and CEO of Porsche AG. Thomas Edig has been made board member at Porsche SE and Mr. Macht’s deputy at Porsche AG, where he is also responsible for HR and social issues and functions as labor director. Macht’s successor as head of production is Wolfgang Leimgruber, who was previously responsible for the body shell and paint shops. Race officials, citing hazardous conditions due to torrential rains that fell at Road Atlanta just past the four-hour mark, called the race at eight hours, 44 minutes running. Peugeot’s two diesel-powered factory prototype coupes finished 1-2 with the pole-sitting 908 HDi of Pedro Lamy and Nic Minassian in second. The first of Audi Sport Team Joest’s Audi R15 TDIs placed third, the car driven by Allan McNish and Dindo Capello. McNish and Capello dominated the race before the rains fell. The two Peugeots got past McNish under yellow when the Scot looped the Audi under wet conditions. Dyson Racing took its first Petit Le Mans victory with a victory in LMP2 for Marino Franchitti, Butch Leitzinger and Ben Devlin. Their Mazda-powered Lola B09/86 coupe had problems with gear selection early, but the Acura ARX-01b of Lowe’s Fernandez Racing’s Adrian Fernandez and Luis Diaz experienced steering issues throughout. -

CORVETTE RACING AT LE MANS: All About Preparation Team eager for eight hours of track time ahead attempt at eighth class win • Corvette Racing to make 18th consecutive appearance at Le Mans • Garcia, Magnussen, Taylor reunite in No. 63 Corvette • Gavin, Milner, Fässler try to add Le Mans to last year’s Daytona, Sebring wins • Team conducted two-day private test at Road America in advance of Le Mans DETROIT (June 1, 2017) – Corvette Racing has returned to France for the first steps toward what it hopes is a ninth class victory in 18 consecutive appearances at the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans. The annual Le Mans Test Day on Sunday will give the team – and the rest of the field – eight hours of track time ahead of the twice-round- the-clock event. The Test Day is broken up into a pair of four-hour sessions around the 8.5-mile Circuit de la Sarthe, which is a mix of permanent race track and public roads. It will allow Corvette Racing to validate findings from its own test at Road America earlier this month. All six drivers for the Le Mans program – Antonio Garcia, Jan Magnussen, Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner, Jordan Taylor and Marcel Fässler – sampled the Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C7.Rs in low-downforce trim and on Michelin tires specific for Le Mans. With a number of positive developments from the test in-hand, focus turned toward making final preparations on the two Corvettes and sending them – as well as a collection of equipment – to Europe. -

Dear SCCA Media Partners, Welcome to what is truly a new era of the Sports Car Club of America, as the SCCA National Champi- onship Runoffs heads west for the first time in 46 years to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This event, made possible with the help of our friends and partners at Mazda and the Sports Car Rac- ing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), was met with questions at its announcement that have been answered in a big way, with more than 530 drivers on the entry list and a rejunvenaton of the west coast program all season long. While we haven’t been west of the Rockies since River- side International Raceway in 1968, it’s hard to believe it will be that long before we return again. The question on everyone’s mind, even more than usual, is who is going to win? Are there hidden gems on the west coast who may be making their first Runoffs appearance that will make a name for themselves on the national stage, or will the traditional contenders learn a new track quickly enough to hold their titles? My guess is that we’ll see some of each.
