Cover photo: Patrik Olofsson/N Maps: Stadsbyggnadskontoret Kristianstads kommun PERIODIC REVIEW FOR BIOSPHERE RESERVE INTRODUCTION The UNESCO General Conference, at its 28th session, adopted Resolution 28 C/2.4 on the Statutory Framework of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. This text defines in particular the criteria for an area to be qualified for designation as a biosphere reserve (Article 4). In addition, Article 9 foresees a periodic review every ten years The periodic review is based on a report prepared by the relevant authority, on the basis of the criteria of Article 4. The periodic review must be submitted by the national MAB Committee to the MAB Secretariat in Paris. The text of the Statutory Framework is presented in the third annex. The form which follows is provided to help States prepare their national reports in accordance with Article 9 and to update the Secretariat's information on the biosphere reserve concerned. This report should enable the International Coordinating Council (ICC) of the MAB Programme to review how each biosphere reserve is fulfilling the criteria of Article 4 of the Statutory Framework and, in particular, the three functions: conservation, development and support. It should be noted that it is requested, in the last part of the form (Criteria and Progress Made), that an indication be given of how the biosphere reserve fulfils each of these criteria. -

Abstract: Until recently, Euphyia unangulata was only known in The Netherlands from a single and very old record, dating from 1866. In spite of the wide distribution of this species in the surrounding countries and its very common food- plant Stellaria media, it was not recorded for The Netherlands again until 1981. It seems to have established a popula¬ tion in the country since it was seen in many later years in a row and in increasing numbers. Nevertheless, it seems to be restricted mainly to a relatively small area in the central and southeastern part of the province of Noord-Brabant. In The Netherlands E. unangulata has two generations. MOTHS AND BUTTERFLIES LEPIDOPTERA DISTRIBUTION DATA SOURCES (LEPIDOPTERA) * Detailed distributional information has been J.D. Lafontaine published for only a few groups of Lepidoptera in western Biological Resources Program, Agriculture and Agri-food Canada. Scott (1986) gives good distribution maps for Canada butterflies in North America but these are generalized shade Central Experimental Farm Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0C6 maps that give no detail within the Montane Cordillera Ecozone. A series of memoirs on the Inchworms (family and Geometridae) of Canada by McGuffin (1967, 1972, 1977, 1981, 1987) and Bolte (1990) cover about 3/4 of the Canadian J.T. Troubridge fauna and include dot maps for most species. A long term project on the “Forest Lepidoptera of Canada” resulted in a Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre (Agassiz) four volume series on Lepidoptera that feed on trees in Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Canada and these also give dot maps for most species Box 1000, Agassiz, B.C. V0M 1A0 (McGugan, 1958; Prentice, 1962, 1963, 1965). Dot maps for three groups of Cutworm Moths (Family Noctuidae): the subfamily Plusiinae (Lafontaine and Poole, 1991), the subfamilies Cuculliinae and Psaphidinae (Poole, 1995), and ABSTRACT the tribe Noctuini (subfamily Noctuinae) (Lafontaine, 1998) have also been published. Most fascicles in The Moths of The Montane Cordillera Ecozone of British Columbia America North of Mexico series (e.g. Ferguson, 1971-72, and southwestern Alberta supports a diverse fauna with over 1978; Franclemont, 1973; Hodges, 1971, 1986; Lafontaine, 2,000 species of butterflies and moths (Order Lepidoptera) 1987; Munroe, 1972-74, 1976; Neunzig, 1986, 1990, 1997) recorded to date. -

Notes on the Scottish Macro-moth List, 2015 This list aims to include every species of macro-moth reliably recorded in Scotland, with an assessment of its Scottish status, as guidance for observers contributing to the National Moth Recording Scheme (NMRS). It updates and amends the previous lists of 2009, 2011, 2012 & 2014. The requirement for inclusion on this checklist is a minimum of one record that is beyond reasonable doubt. Plausible but unproven species are relegated to an appendix, awaiting confirmation or further records. Unlikely species and known errors are omitted altogether, even if published records exist. Note that inclusion in the Scottish Invertebrate Records Index (SIRI) does not imply credibility. At one time or another, virtually every macro-moth on the British list has been reported from Scotland. Many of these claims are almost certainly misidentifications or other errors, including name confusion. However, because the County Moth Recorder (CMR) has the final say, dubious Scottish records for some unlikely species appear in the NMRS dataset. A modern complication involves the unwitting transportation of moths inside the traps of visiting lepidopterists. Then on the first night of their stay they record a species never seen before or afterwards by the local observers. Various such instances are known or suspected, including three for my own vice-county of Banffshire. Surprising species found in visitors’ traps the first time they are used here should always be regarded with caution. Clerical slips – the wrong scientific name scribbled in a notebook – have long caused confusion. An even greater modern problem involves errors when computerising the data. -

They are intended to form a base for protection programs and measures of habitat mainten ance. Résumé On y décrit les prétentions à l’habitat et l’écologie pour la plupart des espèces de lépidoptères en voie de disparition et quelques des espèces disparues de l’Etat fédéral de Brandebourg (Allemagne orientale). Ces données basent sur les expériences des auteurs ainsi que sur des informations de la littérature. Ils peuvent être la base de pro grammes de protection ainsi que de mesures pour l’entretien du biotope. Einleitung Neben Hinweisen auf die Gesamtverbreitung der vorge 1992 erschien die Rote Liste der bedrohten Tierarten stellten Arten in Brandenburg wird auch die Dringlich des Landes Brandenburgs. Um wirksame Schutzmaß keit von Artenschutzprogrammen im Sinne des Erhaltes nahmen (im Sinne des Biotopschutzes) ergreifen zu und der Pflege der Biotope erläutert. Auf die Tatsache, können, ist die Kenntnis der Lebensansprüche der daß der Einsatz sämtlicher Pflanzenschutzmittel in einzelnen Arten - in diesem Falle der Schmetterlinge - Habitaten gefährdeter Arten generell zu unterlassen ist, eine grundlegende Voraussetzung. Aus diesem Grunde wird bei der Behandlung der einzelnen Arten nicht wie haben die Autoren versucht, die Biotopansprüche dieser der hingewiesen. -

Three hundred sixty species of moths were collected; they repre sented the following families: Sphingidae, Saturniidae, Amatidae, Nolidae, Lithosiidae, Arctiidae, Agaristidae, Noctuidae, Notodonti dae, Liparidae, Lasiocampidae, Thyatiridae, Drepanidae, Geomet ridae, and Epiplemidae. Information is given on the seasonal occur renee, relative abundance, flight habits, and known foodplants of the species collected. Biological and behavioral information is in- eluded for 82 of the species. Comparisons are made between the local fauna and that of the northeastern United States, British Columbia, and a specific locality in southern California. A new device for attracting and holding moths more effec tively within the vicinity of the light (a parabolic moth sheet), which does not involve the use of a trap, is described. Species on the Menu of a Generalist

HEBERT* *Department of Integrative Biology, University of Guelph, Guelph, ON, Canada N1G2W1, †Department of Biology, University of Western Ontario, London, ON, Canada N6A 5B7 Abstract One of the most difficult interactions to observe in nature is the relationship between a predator and its prey. When direct observations are impossible, we rely on morphological classification of prey remains, although this is particularly challenging among generalist predators whose faeces contain mixed and degraded prey fragments. In this investigation, we used a poly- merase chain reaction and sequence-based technique to identify prey fragments in the guano of the generalist insectivore, the eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis), and evaluate several hypotheses about prey selection and prey defences. The interaction between bats and insects is of significant evolutionary interest because of the adaptive nature of insect hearing against echolocation. However, measuring the successes of predator tactics or particular prey defences is limited because we cannot normally identify these digested prey fragments beyond order or family. Using a molecular approach, we recovered sequences from 89% of the fragments tested, and through comparison to a reference database of sequences, we were able to identify 127 different species of prey. Our results indicate that despite the robust jaws of L. borealis, most prey taxa were softer-bodied Lepidoptera.
