Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523 Abstract A list of 1531 species ofLepidoptera is presented, collected over 15 years (1988 to 2002), in eleven southern West Virginia counties. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains, -

Errata and First Update to the 2010 Checklist of the Lepidoptera Of
Errata and first uppppdate to the 2010 checklist of the Lepidoptera of Alberta Gregory R. Pohl, Jason J Dombroskie, Jean‐François Landry, Charles D Bird, and Vazrick Nazari lead author contact: [email protected] Introduction: Since the Annotated list of the Lepidoptera of Alberta was published in March 2010 (Pohl et al. 2010), a few typographical and nomenclatural errors have come to the authors' attention, as well as three erroneous AB records that were inadvertently omitted from that publication. Additionally, a considerable number of new AB species records have been brought to our attention since that checklist went to press. As expected, most are microlepidoptera. We detail all these items below, in what we hope will be a regular series of addenda to the AB list. If you are aware of further errors or additions to the AB Lepidoptera list, please contact the authors. Wit hin the NidNoctuoidea, there are a few minor iiiinconsistencies in the order of species wihiithin genera, and in the order of genera within tribes or subtribes, as compared to the sequence published by Lafontaine & Schmidt (2010). As well, the sequence of tribes in the AB list does not exactly match that of Lafontaine & Schmidt (2010), particularly in the Erebinae. We are not detailing those minor differences here unless they involve a move to a new genus or new higher taxonomic category. Errata: Abstract, p. 2, line 10, should read "1530... annotations are given" 41 Nemapogon granella (p. 55). Add Kearfott (1905) to the AB literature records. 78 Caloptilia syringella (p. 60). This species should be placed in the genus Gracillaria as per De Prins & De Prins (2005). -

Macrolepidoptera Inventory of the Chilcotin District Aud I. Fischer – Biologist Jon H. Shepard - Research Scientist and Crispin S. Guppy – Research Scientist January 31, 2000 2 Abstract This study was undertaken to learn more of the distribution, status and habitat requirements of B.C. macrolepidoptera (butterflies and the larger moths), the group of insects given the highest priority by the BC Environment Conservation Center. The study was conducted in the Chilcotin District near Williams Lake and Riske Creek in central B.C. The study area contains a wide variety of habitats, including rare habitat types that elsewhere occur only in the Lillooet-Lytton area of the Fraser Canyon and, in some cases, the Southern Interior. Specimens were collected with light traps and by aerial net. A total of 538 species of macrolepidoptera were identified during the two years of the project, which is 96% of the estimated total number of species in the study area. There were 29,689 specimens collected, and 9,988 records of the number of specimens of each species captured on each date at each sample site. A list of the species recorded from the Chilcotin is provided, with a summary of provincial and global distributions. The habitats, at site series level as TEM mapped, are provided for each sample. A subset of the data was provided to the Ministry of Forests (Research Section, Williams Lake) for use in a Flamulated Owl study. A voucher collection of 2,526 moth and butterfly specimens was deposited in the Royal BC Museum. There were 25 species that are rare in BC, with most known only from the Riske Creek area. -

Entomol. Fennica 21: 243253. Parasitoids of leaf-spinning Lepidoptera associated with two isolated central Eu- ropean peat bogs were investigated. Five families of parasitoid Hymenoptera (Braconidae, Ichneumonidae, Eulophidae, Pteromalidae and Encyrtidae) were recorded. Three categories were recognised: (1) primary parasitoids, (2) faculta- tive hyperparasitoids and (3) obligatory hyperparasitoids. Ten species of Braco- nidae, five species and seven marked morphospecies among Ichneumonidae, and three species of Chalcidoidea were identified. Despite of some niche-specific (but less host-specific) parasitoids, all these hymenopterans are likely to be gen- eralists and none of them were confirmed to be habitat and/or host specialists. Unlike their eurytopic (opportunistic tyrphoneutral) parasitoids, the Lepidoptera hosts associated with peat bogs are partially highly stenotopic (tyrphobionts and tyrphophiles). The occurrence of parasitoids compared to their potential hosts was structured along an ecological (mesoclimatic) gradient, so most parasitoids were recorded from margins while stenotopic (narrow habitat adaptation) moths were mostly distributed near the centre of the bog habitat. Serious or significant pests require strategic-level plans developed at a national level describing the overall aim and high-level objectives to be achieved, and setting out the response strategy for eradicating or containing outbreaks. 2. The UK Plant Health Risk Group (PHRG) has commissioned, following identification by the UK Plant Health Risk Register, pest-specific contingency plans for those pests which pose the greatest risk and require stakeholder consultation. 3. The purpose of these pest-specific contingency plans is to ensure a rapid and effective response to outbreaks of the pests or diseases described. They are designed to help government agencies anticipate, assess, prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from pest and disease outbreaks. 4. Contingency planning starts with the anticipation and assessment of potential threats, includes preparation and response, and finishes with recovery. Anticipate 5. Gathering information and intelligence about the pest, including surveillance and horizon scanning. Assess 6. Identifying concerns and preparing plans. 7. Setting outbreak management objectives Prepare 8. Ensuring staff and stakeholders are familiar with the pest. Response 9. Identifying the requirements for either containing or eradicating the pest or disease, including work to determine success. 10. The Defra Contingency Plan for Plant Health in England (in draft) gives details of the teams and organisations involved in pest and disease response in England, and their responsibilities and governance. Summary Two Asiatic Euliini genera, Drachmobola Meyrick and Protopterna Meyrick are characterised, and two are described : Dicanticinta gen.n. (for Tortrix diticinctana Walsingham) and Minutargyrotoza gen.n. (for Capua minuta Walsingham). All their known species are discussed or mentioned, and one is described : Protopterna eremia sp.n. A preliminary note on the tribe Euliini and some data on its non-Palaearctic genera are given. Résumé Identification de deux genres asiatiques d'Euliini : Drachmobola Meyrick et Protopterna Meyrick, et description de deux genres nouveaux de cette tribu : Dicanticinta gen.n. (pour Tortrix diticinctana Walsingham) et Mi- nutargyrotoza gen.n. (pour Capua minuta Walsingham). Toutes les espèces connues de ces genres sont présentées ou mentionées, et une nouvelle espèces est décrite : Protopterna eremia sp.n. Introduction Obraztsov (1965) placed the genera Drachmobola Meyrick and Protopterna Meyrick in the tribe Cnephasiini. Common (1963) included at least two Australian genera in that tribe and redescribed Drachmobola strigulata Meyrick. Diakonoff (1975) transferred Drachmobola to the Epitymbiini, describing in it one unrelated species. Kuznetsov & Stekolnikov (1977) erected in the Cochylini a new subtribe Euliina to comprise two genera, viz., Eulia Hübner and Pseudargyrotoza Obraztsov. -
Lepidoptera of the Tolman Bridge Area (2000-2011)
LEPIDOPTERA OF THE TOLMAN BRIDGE AREA, ALBERTA, 2000-2011 Charles Bird, 8 March 2012 Box 22, Erskine, AB T0C 1G0 [email protected] The present paper includes a number of redeterminations and additions to the information in earlier reports. It also follows the up-to-date order and taxonomy of Pohl et al. (2010), rather than that of Hodges et al. (1983). Brian Scholtens, Greg Pohl and Jean-François Landry collecting moths at a sheet illuminated by a mercury vapor (MV) light, Tolman Bridge, 24 July 2003, during the 2003 Olds meetings of the Lepidopterist’s Society (C.D. Bird image). Tolman Bridge, is located in the valley of the Red Deer River, 18 km (10 miles) east of the town of Trochu. The bridge and adjoining Park land are in the north half of section 14, range 22, township 34, west of the Fourth Meridian. The coordinates at the bridge are 51.503N and 113.009W. The elevation ranges from around 600 m at the river to 800 m or so near the top of the river breaks. In a Natural Area Inspection Report dated 25 June 1982 and in the 1989 Trochu 82 P/14, 1:50,000 topographic map, the land southwest of the bridge was designated as the “Tolman Bridge Municipal Park” while that southeast of the bridge was referred to as the “Tolman Bridge Recreation Area”. In an Alberta, Department of the Environment, Parks and Protected Areas Division paper dated 9 May 2000, the areas on both sides of the river are included in “Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park”. -

Abstract The Australasian genus Scotocyma Turner is revised, containing the species S. albinotata (Walker), S. legalis (Warren), S. asiatica Holloway, S. scotopepla Prout, stat. n., S. manusensis Prout, stat. n., S. mimula (Warren), stat. n. and S. miscix Prout. Scotocyma euryochra Turner, syn. n., S. idioschema Turner, syn. n., S. ischnophrica Turner, syn. n. and S. transfixa Turner, syn. n. are regarded as synonyms of S. albinotata. Four species are described as new: S. samoensis, sp. n., S. sumatrensis, sp. n., S. rutilimixta, sp. n. and S. longiuncus, sp. n. Lectotypes are designated for S. scotopepla, S. manusensis and S. miscix. All species are illustrated, and keys to species and distribution maps are provided. A phylogenetic analysis was performed to test the monophyly of the genus and to examine distribution patterns of the species. A biogeographical discussion is included. The tribal position of the genus is clarified and relationships to closely related genera are discussed.
