“The last will be first, and the first will be last” (Matt 20: 16). As a kid I often heard this from my parents as my siblings and I raced to see who would get to sit in the front seat of the car (pre-airbag era) or as we hurriedly reached for the biggest piece of dessert. Back then, this phrase did me no good…being last, which I usually was, landed me in the back seat and with a less favorable dessert. In my childhood, I was not impressed by these words from Jesus. I did not understand what this meant about the kingdom of God.

The last time I wrote to you, we were also ruminating on what the kingdom of God is like. In Matthew’s July 26 gospel, Jesus compared the kingdom to three things: a treasure which brings great joy, a searching merchant, and a powerful net. Today again in Matthew’s gospel, seven chapters later, Jesus says “the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner” whose goal is to take care of his vineyard. This adds a new spin. This landowner surprises us with a challenge to what we think about fairness. In human logic, you get what you earn, right? However, in the justice of God, those who are “last,” like the workers who went all day without being chosen, receive an equal share in what awaits all who answer God’s call. As a social justice message, this gospel reinforces that we are to care for the least among us while we are here on God’s earth, to notice those who go unnoticed yet have all the same needs as we whose needs are met. It also bears pointing out that the landowner needed all the workers for his vineyard. We cannot fool ourselves into thinking that the work of the kingdom only requires people who show up, who are organized, who feel like they have something to offer, who may already be equipped. It requires every one of us, so rather than racing to get in line, we may be called to recognize the gifts of another and to support them in acknowledging their own worthiness.

Beyond its social justice tones, today’s gospel tells us a story of God’s generous love. God seeks to give us grace we have not earned. The idea of worthiness is a human-made constraint. In God’s view there is no “worthy” – every single human, made in God’s image, is equally loved no matter if they are aware of it or how they respond. As I reflected on this realization, it crossed my mind that as Jesus looked upon the Scribes, the Pharisees, and even his persecutors, he knew that his Father loved them as much as God loves him. Is this what moved him to forgive from the cross? This is mind-blowing! God loves the people we do not, no matter what we think! We don’t really have to line up in any fashion for God’s love, because God extends it to all of us all the time. All of us. This has been a rough year in which the rhetoric of division seems to be a dominant voice, especially in the media. This gospel challenges us to stop before adding our voices to the division and derision, in the knowledge that God’s deepest desire is to boundlessly love each human creation. It may mean we say nothing and pray for the grace to have hearts so filled by God’s love that both our friends and our enemies hear God’s voice in ours.

God’s peace be in your hearts this week!

Doreen Kelly

7 www.SaintAlphonsusPH.org The Memorial Garden for Joanne Twomey was blessed on September 12, 2020

Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Maker of all the universe: You have made the sun and moon and stars, the earth and all who live in it. To you belong the seasons of every year as well as the seasons of our lives. All glory and praise are Yours, O Lord our God!

Today we remember with love and respect our sister, Joanne, who worshiped with us here for many years. Joanne’s dedication to our parish home helped both the campus and the community of St. Alphonsus to grow into what it is today. It is fitting that she be remembered with this garden which displays for us the beauty of God’s creation in each of its seasons.

Lord, we ask your blessing on this special garden as a place not only to praise you in the wonders of nature but to remember our sister, Joanne. Bless what grows here and make it flourish, just as Joanne’s many gifts of time, talent, and treasure continue to help our parish community to thrive. Bless all who will pray here; give them grace and peace.

May comfort and joy be found in Joanne’s Garden, which we bless (+) in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
