In the Old Testament, God sent many prophets to the

Weekly

Israelites to try and get them to change their lives. Most, if not all, were rejected; many were even killed because they challenged the status quo of the people. God wanted His people to repent and change, but instead, they rejected the prophet’s voice. In time, the Lord would punish His people. Many times, this is the only way to get people to change.

Readings…

Sunday:

Ez 2:2-5/Ps 123:1-2, 2, 3-4 [2cd] 2 Cor 12:7-10/Mk 6:1-6a

Monday:

Gn 28:10-22a/Ps 91:1-2, 3-4, 14-15 ab [cf. 2b]/Mt 9:18-26

Tuesday:

Gn 32:23-33/Ps 17:1b, 2-3, 6-7ab, 8b and 15 [15a]/Mt 9:32-38

In the Gospel, Jesus is considered a prophet, and He also is met with rejection. Jesus spends his whole ministry healing and challenging. The healing, the people loved, the challenging not so much. As a prophet, Jesus

is calling the people to a deeper commitment to God. The Pharisees are

much too preoccupied with the law and have no time for love. Jesus’ call to love is not easy. Jesus’ call to forgiveness is not easy. But it is the call the Father wanted Jesus to make. Jesus did the will of His Father even to the point of total rejection.

Wednesday:

Gn 41:55-57; 42:5-7a, 17-24a/Ps 33:2 -3, 10-11, 18-19 [22]/Mt 10:1-7

Thursday:

Gn 44:18-21, 23b-29; 45:1-5/Ps 105:16-17, 18-19, 20-21 [5a] Mt 10:7-15

Friday:

Gn 46:1-7, 28-30/Ps 37:3-4, 18-19, 27 -28, 39-40 [39a]/Mt 10:16-23

Saturday:

There is a lesson here for us, as a people of God. We may, at times, if we are doing the work of God, fail to convert the people. But this should not get us down. Jesus met with rejection because following the voice of God is not easy. We should not find it any different in our own lives. Sometimes our actions and words may challenge others to a better life, but others may be so caught up in the way of the world they forget God altogether; this should not

stop us. There is still plenty to do. In our own way, we must be prophets,

always calling one another to a better way of life, to a deeper intimacy with the Lord. With God, all things are possible.

Gn 49:29-32; 50:15-26a/Ps 105:1-2, 3 -4, 6-7 [cf. Ps 69:33]/Mt 10:24-33

Sunday:

Am 7:12-15/Ps 85:9-10, 11-12, 13-14 [8]/Eph 1:3-14 or 1:3-10/Mk 6:7-13

SAINTS AND SPECIAL
OBSERVANCES

I want to wish everyone a happy 4th of July, and I hope everyone has a nice day with outdoor barbeques. Next Sunday is our Parish Picnic. It’s been a long time since we have all gotten together. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate, and everyone will have a good time. The picnic will be a little different; we ask that you bring your entrée, and the church will provide tables, chairs, snacks, water, and entertainment for everyone.

Sunday:

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Independence Day

Monday:

St. Anthony Zaccaria, Priest

I also want to inform everyone that on August 1st, we will have another

special Mass. August 1st is the feast of St Alphonsus. It is also Fr. Tom’s 50th

profession anniversary and Fr. Rodney’s and my 40th anniversary. Last year was Fr. Pete’s 50th, but because of COVID, we were not able to celebrate it. Our profession date is more important than our ordination because it is the step we took to become Redemptorists.

LITURGY NOTES...

When St. Alphonsus Liguori founded the Redemptorists he placed the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer under the patronage of Mary, the Immaculate Conception. In 1854 when Pope Pius IX solemnly declared the doctrine of Mary’s sinlessness from the moment of her conception, St. John Neumann, himself a spiritual son of St. Alphonsus, was present for the occasion.

St. Alphonsus Liguori, wrote an explanation of the S a lve Regina in his

monumental work The Glories of Mary. St. Alphonsus identifies two reasons

as to why Mary is our life. Mary is our life because she obtains for us the pardon of our sins and because she obtains for us perseverance. Mary is our sweetness because she renders death sweet to her clients. And lastly, Mary is the hope of all, including sinners. These three attributes accorded to Mary in

the S a l v e Regina are best summarized by the Hail Mary. As is the case with

many of the Church’s beautiful traditions, the composer of the S a lve Regina is not certain. It has pleased Providence to cast a veil over the human origin of this masterpiece of Christian piety, in order to highlight the action of the Paraclete.

There is a long-standing tradition of singing the S a lve Regina immediately after the Concluding

Rite of the Liturgy as Fr. Steve and Fr. Rodney did at Our Mother of Perpetual Feast Day Mass

on June 27. As a prayer, Hail Holy Queen, it is commonly said at the end of the rosary.

Salve ve, Regina, Mater misericordiæ, vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.
Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, Hail our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to you we send up our sighs,
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevæ, Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle. mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us;
Eia, ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos

misericordes oculos ad nos converte;

Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende. and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Je- sus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises

  • of Christ.
  • O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – God’s Grace is Sufficient

In today’s second reading, St. Paul says “a thorn in the flesh was given to me.” Some think of this as a physical alignment that Paul was experiencing while others think this may be referring to a person who has been giving Paul a hard time. In either case, Paul is “suffering.” Suffering, the archenemy of today’s god of comfort. People today avoid suffering at all cost, even the slightest bit of discomfort. This is the result of living a “self-centered” life, everything revolves around me. As Christians, we are called to live “God -centered” lives. Using our God-given gifts for the glory of God and the benefit of others. From this viewpoint, suffering takes on a different meaning. First of all, suffering unites us with Jesus, who suffered and died for our sins to restore our relationship with God and open the gates of Heaven for us. Second, suffering shows our dependence of God. We were not designed to journey through life alone, we need God’s guidance. Finally, through suffering, we open our hearts and are filled with God’s love and mercy. We become instruments of His love and mercy for others. archstl.org/dynamic

ALPHONSUS LIGUORI Preacher of the God of Loveliness

245 Traditions of Spiritual Guidance ALPHONSUS LIGUORI Preacher of the God of Loveliness By TERRENCE J. MORAN NE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENTS in the study of O spirituality since the Second Vatican Council has been the attention paid to the spiritual experience of the ordinary Christian. Latin American liberation theologies value the reflections on Scripture of the basic ecclesial communi- ties as a genuine source of spiritual tradition. Increasingly scholars of spiritu- ality are aware of the need to correct, or at least to amplify, the traditional 'schools of spirituality' by considering how these traditions actually influ- enced the life of the ordinary believer. I Often the very perspective that a school of spirituality considers as most characteristic has had the least influence on the life of the ordinary believer; the perspective or practice that the school considers more marginal by contrast has had a formative effect on Christian life and piety. While the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius Loyola are the defining text of Jesuit spirituality, the Society of Jesus has had far more influence on the life of the ordinary Catholic through propagation of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Order of Preachers, the Dominicans, has had the greatest direct influence on Catholic life not through the magisterial theology of Thomas Aquinas, but through preaching of the rosary. Few ordinary Catholics would have much familiarity with the content of the spirituality of Teresa of Avila or John of the Cross, but the Carmelite tradition touched countless Catholics until very recently through the Brown Scapular. When the history of spirituality is studied not from the perspective of schools and classic texts but from the perspective of the religious experience of the ordinary Roman Catholic, there is scarcely a more influential figure in • modem Catholicism than St Alphonsus Liguori.
  • SAINT ALPHONSUS LIGUORI CATHOLIC CHURCH STATIONS of the CROSS

SAINT ALPHONSUS LIGUORI CATHOLIC CHURCH STATIONS of the CROSS

SAINT ALPHONSUS LIGUORI CATHOLIC CHURCH STATIONS of the CROSS Why do we pray the Stations of the Cross? The Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) is a devotion, particularly appropriate during Lent, by which we meditate upon the final earthly journey of Christ. Jerusalem is the city of the historical Way of the Cross. In the Middle Ages the attraction of the holy places of the Lord's Passion caused some pilgrims to reproduce them in their own city. There is also an historical devotion to the “dolorous journey of Christ” which consisted of journeying from one church to another in memory of Christ's Passion. This last stage of Christ's journey is unspeakably hard and painful, but He completed it out of love for the Father and for humanity. As we pray the Stations of the Cross, we are reminded of our own journey towards heaven. We may also meditate upon the demands of following Christ, which include carrying our own “crosses.” Adapted from Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy #131-133 What is a Plenary Indulgence? The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines an indulgence as “a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven...” Obtaining an indulgence requires prescribed conditions (i.e. being in a state of grace) and prescribed works (see below). "An indulgence is partial or plenary as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin." We can gain indulgences for ourselves or for the dead. CCC #1471 “To acquire a plenary indulgence it is necessary to perform the work to which the indulgence is attached and to fulfill the following three conditions [within several days]: sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion, and prayer for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff.

    The Holy See

The Holy See PRINCIPI APOSTOLORUM PETRO ENCYCLICAL OF POPE BENEDICT XV ON ST. EPHREM THE SYRIAN TO THE PATRIARCHS, PRIMATES, ARCHBISHOPS, BISHOPS, AND OTHER ORDINARIES IN PEACE AND COMMUNION WITH THE APOSTOLIC SEE. Venerable Brothers, Greetings and The Apostolic Benediction. 1. To Peter the Prince of the Apostles, the divine Founder of the Church allotted the gifts of inerrancy [1] in matters of faith and of union with God. This relationship is similar to that of a "Choir Director of the Choir of the Apostles."[2] He is the common teacher and rector [3] of all, so that he might feed the flock of Him who established His Church [4] on the authority of Peter himself and his successors. And on this mystical rock the foundation [6] of the entire ecclesiastical structure stands firm as on a hinge. From it rises the unity of Christian charity as well as our Christian faith. 2. Indeed the unique gift of Peter's primacy is that he might spread everywhere and preserve the riches of charity and faith, as Ignatius Theophorus, a man of Apostolic times, beautifully declared. For in those noble letters he wrote to the Roman Church on his journey, announcing his arrival in Rome to be martyred for Christ, he gave testimony to the primacy of that Church over all others by calling it 'presiding officer over the universal community of charity."[7] This was to signify not only that the Universal Church was the visible image of divine charity, but also that Blessed Peter, together with his primacy and his love for Christ (affirmed by his triple confession), remains heir of the Roman See.

The Act of Spiritual Communion by St. Alphonsus Liguori Prayer Cards Pope Francis's Prayer to Mary During Coronavirus Pandemic

The Act of Spiritual Communion by St. Alphonsus Liguori My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. Prayer Cards In this time of need, Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the USCCB invites the faithful to seek together the maternal intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Below are prayer cards for download. http://www.usccb.org/about/communications/upload/prayer-coronavirus-2020- card.pdf Pope Francis’s Prayer to Mary during Coronavirus Pandemic Pope Francis composes a prayer to Our Lady, Health of the Sick, to implore her protection during the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. Translation courtesy of Vatican News. O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection.

Along the path of communion with God The heart that loves God loves him totally and always The loving heart accepts death and life in Christ CHAPTER 4 Don Bosco and Francis de Sales Don Bosco and Francis de Sales - the correlation The vital Salesian affinities Francis' staunch pastoral character Doctrinal conviction founded on love Salesian pastoral attitudes The Salesian Family today PREFACE FRANCIS, OUR TITULAR AND PATRON SAINT Francis de Sales is one of our Salesian Family saints by special right, and we are most grateful to Father Aubry for presenting us with this pamphlet. Only one with his profound knowledge of the saint could succeed in outlining his life and special brand of spirituality with such brevity and perception. John Bosco had been well acquainted with St Francis of Sales long before his priestly ordination. Right from his seminary days at Chieri, he had looked to Francis de Sales and Charles Borromeo as his special champions; furthermore, St Francis (together with St Aloysius) were recommended as specific models for all the clerics.

ST. ALPHONSUS LIGUORI CATHOLIC CHURCH HOLY TRINITY CYCLE B – WORSHIP AID May 30, 2021 PARISH-VOCATIONS PRAYER Loving God, In baptism You called us by name, making us members of Your people, the Church. We praise You for Your goodness. We thank You for the gift of our parish and the wonderful ministries we have to build Your Church. You have called us, not to set us apart, but to bring us together with others who need our love. May we bring comfort to those who call You, healing to those who need You and openness to all who seek You. Send Your spirit upon us to open our hearts to serve You in our vocations as priests, brothers, sisters, deacons, and married and single members of our Church. May our vocations be a reflection of Your light and Your love. We pray that You watch over us, and bless the people of St. Alphonsus Liguori Parish as we continue to build Your kingdom here on Earth. BEDE, CHADWELL HEATH HYMN SHEET FOR THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER 18th APRIL 2021 ENTRANCE HYMN The strife is o’er, the battle done; The victory of life is won; The song of triumph has begun: Alleluia! The pow’rs of death have done their worst; But Christ their legions has dispersed; Let shouts of holy joy outburst: Alleluia! The three sad days are quickly sped; He rises glorious from the dead; All glory to our risen Head: Alleluia! He closed the yawning gates of hell; The bars from heav’n’s high portals fell; Let hymns of praise His triumphs tell: Alleluia! Lord, by the stripes which wounded You, In us You’ve won the vict’ry too, That we may live, and sing to You: Alleluia! 17th C, tr Francis Pott (1832-1909) alt.
