Dve stvari }e imati ovde najpovla{}eniji prostor : Nova mitologija, kwi`evnost istinita. Priroda zra~i lepotom. Treba li `aliti zbog toga? Bastion oficijelne literature i kritike uspavquje. Svet vredi tek u svojim krajnostima i traje tek zahvaquju}i sredstvima. On vredi tek kroz ultra i traje kroz umerenosti. Poka`i u jednoj re~enici wen blesak, wen odgovor, weno ni{tavilo, wene temeqe..." Bez potpore, investitora i sponzora. Ne{to sli~no ose}am skoro svakog predve~erja, odlaze}i izvan sela u {etwu, do Obrenove Stra`are, pru`nog prelaza, ponekad do Glavi~ice. Idemo pe{ke, polako, moj mla|i sin i ja. Treba nam desetak minuta do obala Peka. Vrlo retko prolaze i automobili...Sve mnogo podse}a na dane mog ranog detiwstva, iako ni{ta vi{e nije isto...

Marija Šarović, a contemporary Serbian scholar on the subject of vampires, observes that in Serbian literature, the vampire appears only in realistic prose during the last couple of decades of the nineteenth century, although there were earlier traces of the same.

The Introduction places the research in the scholarly context of the Parry-Lord theory of oral composition, later analyses of transitional texts that contain both oral traditional and literary characteristics, and recent interest in the entire process of transcription, edition and publication of songs belonging to the oral tradition. This is followed by an outline of facts relevant to the social and political history of Montenegro, its epic tradition and earliest

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Practical Aesthetics: Negotiating Sickness in Serbia and Macedonia A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in Culture and Performance by Christina Novakov-Ritchey 2017 ã Copyright by Christina Novakov-Ritchey 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Practical Aesthetics: Negotiating Sickness in Serbia and Macedonia by Christina Novakov-Ritchey Master of Arts in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor David Delgado Shorter, Chair As cultural practitioners, traditional healers in Macedonia and eastern Serbia negotiate the materiality of the sick body by facilitating aesthetic encounters. Bajanje healers manipulate words, lead, plants, water, and other materials to transform their guests’ relationships to health. Within the bajanje encounter, healers create intimate, culturally-sanctioned spaces through which to materially intervene in their guests’ mental and physical health. Negotiating shame and vulnerability, bajanje healers empower individual members of rural Serbian and Macedonian villages to maintain their own health and the health of their communities. Calling upon a long traditional lineage, these healers delineate a community that extends through innumerable past and future generations. By recognizing how bajanje weaves itself into the daily, material ii routines of healers and their guests, I propose that we recognize bajanje as part of everyday life and by extension that we recognize bajanje as contemporary and enduring. iii The thesis of Christina Novakov-Ritchey is approved. • Vetrovi Kao Mitološka Bića U Predstavama Južnih Slovena U Istočnom Delu Balkana
Vetrovi kao mitološka bića u predstavama južnih Slovena u istočnom delu Balkana Tanja Petrović The article explores the relationship of beliefs and notions related to South-Slavic «wind-like» mythological beings such as (h)ala and lam(n)ja, and the lexicon belonging to the semantic sphere «wind names» in the Eastern Balkan area. It is shown that the most salient characteristics of these mythological beings (they are strong, gluttonous, bring dise- ases and destroy harvests) are used as a motivation for names of particular winds, which confirms high similarity (and often equality) between meteorological phenomena such as wind or storm, and mythological beings in the notions of South Slavs.

doi:10.7592/FEJF2014.59.radulovic FATE WRITTEN ON THE FOREHEAD IN SERBIAN ORAL NARRATIVES Nemanja Radulović Abstract: This paper examines narratives about fate from the Serbian corpus, as well as beliefs related to them. A characteristic motif is that the demons of fate write fate on people’s forehead. Such motifs and beliefs are also encountered elsewhere on the Balkans, especially in the areas that were under Turkish influ- ence (Greece, Albania, Bulgaria), so it is undoubtedly a Balkanism. The presence of the motif among Turks and Arabs indicates oriental roots. However, the bottom source seems to be India where the oldest examples have been recorded. Classical Sanskrit literature (including tales collections, such as Hitopadeśa, Pañcatantra, Vikramacarita, Vetalapañcaviṃśati) provides numerous examples of this motif. This is certainly not a source but only a testimony of the presence of the motif. The contemporary rituals and views of modern popular Hinduism testify to its connection to belief. It seems that beliefs and narratives migrated via Muslim culture to the Balkans. Methodologically speaking, this is not a matter of going back to Benfey or Cosquin, but an example of the importance of regions and cul- tural contacts. The motif and belief seem to be close to the phraseologism “written on the forehead”, but the conclusion is that they have different origins; while the idiom that is present in many languages comes from the idea of “reading”, discerning one‘s nature, the narrative motif clearly has a specifically Oriental origin and is linked to living belief. Keywords: Balkans, belief, fate, India, Islam, migrations, narratives, phraseologisms, regions In oral tradition about fate (ATU 930, 931, 934) spoken in the southern Slavic and Balkan regions, the motif of written fate can often be found.
