The Introduction places the research in the scholarly context of the Parry-Lord theory of oral composition, later analyses of transitional texts that contain both oral traditional and literary characteristics, and recent interest in the entire process of transcription, edition and publication of songs belonging to the oral tradition. This is followed by an outline of facts relevant to the social and political history of Montenegro, its epic tradition and earliest textual representation. The first chapter discusses in detail the concepts of oral traditional, transitional and nontraditional texts and offers a synthetic theoretical framework for the analysis of transitional South Slavonic oral songs, based on their phraseology, style, outlook and contextual evidences about their documentation and singers. In the second chapter, this is followed by a textual analysis of five genuine oral traditional Montenegrin songs from Karadžić’s collection and a discussion of their style, themes and overall perspective. In the third chapter, two songs about contemporary Montenegrin battles from the collection are analysed and identified as proper transitional texts; they contain a number of literary elements and were influenced by the Montenegrin ruler Bishop Petar I, but also retain to some extent the characteristics of traditional oral songs. The final chapter identifies nontraditional elements in the four songs that Karadžić wrote down from a literate Montenegrin singer Đuro Milutinović Crnogorac. It is argued that these songs combine a traditional style and outlook with elements distinct from local oral tradition, which the singer had adopted during his education and under the influence of Bishop Petar. The main conclusion of the thesis is that the earliest publication of Montenegrin oral tradition already contained a number of features of literary origin; two out of eleven songs are proper transitional texts, and four others display the influence of literate culture. These texts and features did not originate in the local oral tradition; rather, they were introduced by a literate singer close to the political leadership and then incorporated in the collection of oral traditional songs during the process of its literary documentation and representation. By revealing the complex socio-political framework giving rise to the early-nineteenth century collections of South Slavonic oral songs, this thesis makes a contribution to current research in the textualisation of the oral tradition, and provides a consistent model for the analysis of transitional texts in oral studies. 2 Acknowledgements I am deeply grateful to my supervisors, Dr David Norris and Dr Vladimir Zorić, for being such meticulous readers and for providing guidance and support beyond any conventions. Most of all, I thank my wife Ljiljana, my mother Jelena and my sister Ksenija for their unconditional love and understanding. 3 Introduction This study analyses Serbian oral epic songs published in the first half of the nineteenth century. By oral epic song, I understand the product of a special poetic technique of oral composition in performance, as described by the American scholars Milman Parry and Albert Lord: Oral epic song is narrative poetry composed in a manner evolved over many generations by singers of tales who did not know how to write; it consists of the building of metrical lines and half lines by means of formulas and formulaic expressions and of the building of songs by the use of themes.1 Sources from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth century, such as notes by foreign travellers, occasional instances of folk songs published in the works of writers from Dubrovnik and the Adriatic Coast, and several seventeenth and eighteenth-century manuscript collections of this poetry, confirm that over the centuries a strong oral tradition existed among the South Slavs. Nonetheless, before the nineteenth century, published sources offered only casual and fragmented instances of this oral tradition. 1 Albert B. Lord, The Singer of Tales 2nd edn (Cambridge, Mass / London: Harvard University Press, 2000), p. 4. 4 The earliest published collections of South Slavonic oral songs appeared in the early nineteenth century, when Vuk Stefanović Karadžić (1878-1864) set out to write them down systematically and published his first collections of Serbian folk songs. Born in the Serbian countryside, Karadžić came to Vienna in 1813 after the collapse of the uprising against the Turks, and played a major role in the modernization of Serbian literature and culture. He reformed the language and orthography by promoting the vernacular instead of the Slavonic- Serbian language used at the time, collected the folklore of Serbian peasants and herders and is considered to be at once the first Serbian folklorist, ethnographer and literary critic. 2 Throughout his life, Karadžić meticulously collected Serbian oral epic and lyric songs, and published three editions with ten volumes altogether between 1814 and 1862. In addition, through his acquaintance with leading scholars of the time, such as Jacob Grimm, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe or Leopold Ranke, and his many publications, Karadžić publicized Serbian folk poetry and Serbian culture in Europe. Two of his younger friends and associates, the prominent Serbian poet Sima Milutinović Sarajlija, and Petar Petrović Njegoš II, Montenegrin ruler and writer, soon followed Karadžić’s founding work and published their editions of epic songs, mostly collected on the territory of present-day Montenegro. Milutinović printed his Pjevanija Crnogorska i Hercegovačka in 1833 and 1837, and Njegoš edited Ogledalo srbsko in 1846. During the second half of the nineteenth century, comprehensive collections of oral traditional poetry of other South Slavonic nations, such as Jukić-Martić’s Narodne pjesme bosanske i hercegovačke, Kosta Hörmann’s Narodne pjesme Muhamedovaca u Bosni i Hercegovini, and the first four volumes of Hrvatske narodne pjesme, were published.3 2 Jovan Deretić, Istorija srpske književnosti (Beograd: Prosveta, 2004), pp. 553-82. For long, this process of documentation and textualization of oral tradition generally did not attract systematic scholarly attention. As John Miles Foley emphasizes, ‘until relatively recently investigators have tended to overlook just how an oral epic reached textual form, preferring to deal with it as a readymade object that could be analyzed with available tools.’4 Recent scholarship, however, pointed out that the published collections are not a simple reflection of oral tradition and focused on its textual representation, that is, to the entire process of its transcription, edition and publication. Parry and Lord already prepared the basis for such analysis by indicating that oral poetry contains some distinctive features like formulaic language and composition in performance, and that therefore oral patterns of composition, distribution and performance essentially differ from those we find in written literature. Although more population left to settle in other countries, Serbia in the first place, Montenegro was also on the receptive side – providing home for emigrants – refugees – from other parts of the Balkan Peninsula fleeing from the Turkish terror. The geographical position of Montenegro and influences of the oldest civilisations and cultures of Southern Europe had a crucial impact on early settlement of the territory of the present-day Montenegro as well as on the level of mobility of its population. The entire Montenegrin history is char- acterised to a high degree by migratory movements of various peoples from prehistory to the recent times. In this respect, particularly significant was the migration of the Slavs, whose migratory domination marked the end of the Roman and the beginning of the Slavic rule. After the Great Migration of peoples, broader-range migratory movements in the Balkans were recorded in the time of Turkish conquest of these area. Part of those migratory waves was the migration of Christian population (Serbs) from the areas of Koso- vo and Scutary (Shkoder). Fearing the Turkish reprisals, people fled towards Zeta and the Seaside. Started in the late 14th, this migratory process contin- ued through the 15th century. However, as of the late 15th century, migrations of the Montenegrin population also started so that in this respect Montenegro represents a tru- ly metanastatic (migratory) region from which, in all periods, more people would move out than in.

Here the knife, revenge and a tribal (plemenski) system exist as nowhere else.1 The whole country is interconnected and almost everyone knows everyone else. Montenegro is nothing but a large family—all of this augurs nothing good. —Mihajlo Dedejic2 When the military receives an order to deploy into a particular area, planners focus on the terrain so the military can use the ground to its advantage. Montenegro provides an abundance of terrain to study, and it is apparent from the rugged karst topography how this tiny republic received its moniker—the Black Mountain. The territory of Montenegro borders Croatia, Bosnia- Herzegovina, Serbia and Albania and is about the size of Connecticut. Together with the much larger republic of Serbia, Montenegro makes up the current Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY). But the jagged terrain of Montenegro is only part of the military equation. Montenegro has a complex, multilayered society in which tribe and clan can still influence attitudes and loyalties. Misunderstanding tribal dynamics can lead a mission to failure. Russian misunderstanding of tribal and clan influence led to unsuccessful interventions in Afghanistan and Chechnya.3 In Afghanistan, the rural population's tribal organization facilitated their initial resistance to the Soviets.

Njima se objašnjava dolazak jednog puka srpske vojske, koji je poslije proboja Solunskog fronta nastupao vardarskom dolinom i od Skoplja i Kosovske Mitrovice uputio se prema Crnoj Gori. Pritom se prema Podgorici kretao preko Gusinjsko-plavske krajine, nakon čega je došlo do pobune Bošnjaka i Albanaca, te pokušaja uspostavljanja nove vlasti, a zatim do formiranja dviju vasojevićkih brigada - Donja i Gornja vasojevićka - koje su se kao paravojne jedinice pridružile srpskoj vojsci i djelovale pod rukovodstvom centralne Crnogorske uprave u Podgorici. Tom su prilikom u Plavu i Gusinju formirane i dvije vojne jedinice - dva bataljona - najprije kao komitske jedinice, koje su u početku djelovale u sastavu komitskog pokreta u Crnoj Gori. Strahovalo se da se uspostavljanjem njihove vlasti ne nametnu policijske vlasti, koje su tokom 1912-1913. počinile teške zločine (masovno strijeljanje – prema nekim podacima ubijeno je preko 8.000 Bošnjaka i Albanaca, a došlo je i do nasilnog pokrštavanja oko 12.500 ljudi).

    Hungarian Historical Review 3, no. 3 (2014): 494–528 Antal Molnár A Forgotten Bridgehead between Rome, Venice, and the Ottoman Empire: Cattaro and the Balkan Missions in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries A key element in the history of the missions that departed from Rome as of the middle of the sixteenth century is the functioning of the mediating structures that ensured the maintenance of the relationship between Rome as the center of the Holy Roman Empire and the territories where the missionaries did their work. On the Dalmatian coast of the Adriatic Sea, Ragusa, which today is the city of Dubrovnik, was the most important bridgehead, but Cattaro, today Kotor, also played a significant role as a point of mediation between Rome and the Ottoman Empire. My intention in this essay is to present the many roles of Cattaro in the region, focusing in particular on its role in the maintenance of communication between Rome and missions to the Balkans. Cattaro never lost its Balkan orientation, even following the weakening of economic ties and the loss of its episcopal jurisdiction, which had extended over parishes in Serbia in the Middle Ages. Rather, in the sixteenth century it grew with the addition of a completely new element. From 1535 to 1786 Cattaro was the most important center of the postal service between Venice and Istanbul. As of 1578, the management of the Istanbul post became the responsibility of the Bolizza family. Thus the family came to establish a wide network of connections in the Balkans. I examine these connections and then offer an analysis of the plans concerning the settlement of the Jesuits in Cattaro.

The research revealed the methods of identification and evaluation of different landscape types. Moreover, it showed how such an approach could considerably contribute to the preservation of the space’s identity and quality by taking into account the existing characteristics of the space or the relationship between cultural and natural heritage. The identification of the landscape types was followed by the evaluation of individual elements and assessment of vulnerability in relation to the space’s natural, cultural, and visual quality.

    Hungarian Historical Review 5, no. 2 (2016): 332–356 Michael Antolović Modern Serbian Historiography between Nation-Building and Critical Scholarship: The Case of Ilarion Ruvarac (1832–1905) In the process of the construction of the Serbian nation, the discipline of history had a prominent role, as was true in the case of other European nations. Especially reinforced after recognition of the independent Principality of Serbia at the Congress of Berlin in 1878, this process led gradually to the building of a Serbian bourgeois society with all its modern institutions. A year later, an important controversy began, which was not limited to the academic circles, but strongly influenced all of Serbian culture over the course of the next 15 years. The controversy was marked by the dispute between supporters of a Romantic view of history and the supporters of the modern historical scholarship embodied in the work of Leopold von Ranke and his successors. The Romantics were ardent nationalists who, though they lacked an adequate knowledge of the relevant methods, used the past for the legitimation of their own nationalistic ideologies and were trying to demonstrate the continuity of the Serbian nation from Antiquity to modern times. Ilarion Ruvarac (1832–1905) played the key role in the refutation of this nationalistic para-historical ideology. Ruvarac accepted Ranke’s methodology, and he insisted on the “scientific character” of historical knowledge and its objectivity. He therefore insisted that “historical science” had to be based on critical assessments of archival sources, which could lead historians to the “historical truth.” According to this principle of historical scholarship, he researched different topics concerning the history of the Serbian and Balkan peoples from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century.

PREDGOVOR IVad mi je odbor „Matice Hrvatske" u srpnju ove godine povjerio, da napišem zemljopis i poviest Bosne za hrvatsko obćinstvo, najvećom se voljom prihvatili posla, i to tim radje, što je već punih sedam godina upravo Bosna bila najmilijim predmetom mojih privatnih studija. Naumili napisati djelo, gdje bi najveći trud uložio u samu poviest te liepe hrvatske zemlje, i to na temelju mnogobrojnih novijih izvora, što jih izdadoše Miklošić, Pucić, Šafafik, Theiner, Rački, Ljubić, Makušev i neki magjarski historici. Nadao sam se, da ću u ovom djelu koješta dopuniti, što bijaše nepoznato starijim piscem o Bosni, kanoti Schimeku, Engelu i Jukiću, a možda štogod i izpraviti, što su jedno­ strano shvatili neki noviji povjestnici, a napose Rus MajkoAL Ciela knjiga imala je iznositi 15 štampanih tabaka. Pišuć medjutim knjigu započeli geografijom, a ta se preko moje volje tako raztegnu, da mi napokon neostade ni vremena ni prostora za samu historiju. U toj me ne­ volji pomogne odbor „Matice Hrvatske" odredivši, da se za ovu godinu kano prvi svezak izdade samo zemljopis Bosne; a poviest Bosne da napišem nešto obsežnije za buduću godinu, te će se ovaj dio mojega rukopisa izdati kano drugi svezak djela o Bosni. Pri sastavljanju zemljopisa Bosne uzeli si za temelj slično djelce neumornoga franjevca I. Fr. Jukića, koje je doduše već pred četvrt stoljeća svj tlo ugledalo, ali ipak i danas još mnogo vriedi.
