Aymanov, as a talented actor, thinker, who made an invaluable contribution to the formation and development of the Kazakh stage art. Shaken was a multi-faceted artist. Before we talk about Aymanov's arrival in the cinema, we will consider the development of film production in the country. Электронный журнал «Столица Науки» ИЮНЬ 6(23) https://www.scientific-capital.ru Shaken Aymanov, as a talented actor, thinker, who made an invaluable contribution to the formation and development of the Kazakh stage art. Shaken was a multi-faceted artist. Before we talk about Aymanov's arrival in the cinema, we will consider the development of film production in the country. In 1910, the first cinema was opened in Verny (now Almaty). The possibilities of developing the cinema art of each country in the space of the Union republics were determined by the results of experimental research based on advanced models of the all-Soviet school of cinema, taking into account national specifics. Such a model of the multinational Soviet school of cinema, developed from the point of view of the principle of diversity within unity, has become a whole phenomenon in the history of world cinema [1, p. 9]. In the history of any state, the development of cinema will go through certain stages. The artistic genre is always a continuation of the documentary sphere of the genre. The very beginning of the development of cinema begins with each stage in the history of individual republics. It has several reasons. First, if there are periodic features and socio-economic opportunities in public relations, then, on the other hand, the history of individual republics preserved national art, formed from the depths of centuries, and the features of spreading this heritage from generation to generation, which, in turn, contributed to the formation of cinema as an independent industry. These features are also evident in the history of Kazakh cinema. The formation and development of Kazakh cinema was directly influenced by Soviet cinema. Today, it would be possible to divide the history of Kazakh cinema into several stages, which formed their own laws and traditions of their own practical school. Of course, the first stage is characterized by the function of the first mobile installation that came to the Kazakh steppe, the Kazakh audience first got acQuainted with the screen work, saw the power of cinema, which was very interesting to them.. This is 1910-1927 [2, article 96]. The second stage - the period of 1928-1938 - the appearance of the first film productions of chronicle stories on the Kazakh land. These years were a turning point in the history of world cinema. After a period of silence, cinema was "talked about", Электронный журнал «Столица Науки» ИЮНЬ 6(23) https://www.scientific-capital.ru there was a deep theoretical potential of cinema as a new field, and in 1938-1944 the Almaty film Studio was established, the first national competition of screenwriters was organized. During the war, the activities of major film studios in Almaty, such as Mosfilm and Lenfilm, had a direct impact on the formation of our national cinema. The center has delivered the necessary technical equipment for film production to Almaty and started training national specialists who was able to master them. In the 1945-1960 years of formation and development of national cinema. During these years, the first feature films of the Alma-ATA film Studio were put into production. During this period, the school of national directing was being developed. The cinematic paths of Shaken Aymanov, Mazhit Begalin, Abdolla Karsakbayev, Sultan Khodzhikov, Sharip Beisembayev began to form. The possibilities of training specialists in the field of Cinema at the professional level are defined [3, article 45]. The arrival of shaken Aymanov in the cinema corresponded to the years of formation of the history of Kazakh art cinema. The very first film in the field of Cinema was the film "Amangeldy", made in 1938. After learning that the film began shooting in the village of Karakastek near Almaty, he voluntarily enters the episode and became a consultant for this film. In General, the film "Amangeldy" was the first full-length sound film made in the Studio of newsreels "Lenfilm". The screenplay was written by Kazakh playwright Gabit Musrepov and writer Vsevolod Ivanov. According to the Kazakh cinema, a cinema historian Bauyrzhan Nogerbek, the screenplay was attended by Beimbet Maylin. About the shooting of the film, art critic Kabysh Siranov said:"... this film was one of the first pictures based on national cinematography" [4, p.10] - expresses his opinion. Shaken Aymanov, after the film" Amangeldy", in 1940, according to the script of M. Auezov, played the role of Sarsen in the film" Rayhan", in 1942 as Zhapar in the short film "Ak Gul" and received the warm support of the audience. The first artistic work of the Alma-ATA film Studio, created independently after the war, in 1945 in the film "Songs of Abay" Shaken Aymanov played the image of Sharip, one of the main roles. The acting skills of Shaken Aymanov, accurately emphasizing the roots of the character features of the most complex character Sharip, Электронный журнал «Столица Науки» ИЮНЬ 6(23) https://www.scientific-capital.ru showed this "unpleasant character" so "attractive". Movies after the film "Abay" allowed Shaken to make difficult roles. Then sh. Aymanov as an actor played the main and supporting roles in a number of films: "Altyn Muis" (1948), "Zhambyl" (1952), "In one district" (1961), "Aldar Kose" (1964), "In the foothills of Naizatas" (1969), etc. In the film "Zhambyl", shot according to the script of N.Pogodin and A. Tazhibayev, the role of Zhambyl – this was the high role of Shaken Aymanov in the movie. Sh. Aymanov met Zhambyl during a visit to the decade of Kazakh literature and art, held in Moscow in 1936. During the long journey, the young people heard many stories, poems and thanked the poet. Muscovites strongly respected Zhambyl and welcomed. During the trip, Shaken learned several of the poet's poems. This was its distinctive feature [5, p. 85]. During the filming of the film, it was not easy for the 38-year-old to play the role of Zhambyl. Two Directors Dzigan very much searched, and the screen image of Zh. Zhabayev turned out successfully. The film, shot over 2 years, was shown in many foreign countries and was well-rated. The role of shaken Aymanov in the films "Zhambyl"earned special respect. The role of Zhambyl, was an example of which could serve as a national character, can be called the culmination of Aymanov's acting skills. On his creative path in cinema, Shaken Aymanov played as an actor of unique image of deep characters, the founder of Kazakh cinema in the context of national directing. After the film "Amangeldy", the historical-revolutionary theme was reflected in the film "Steppe Girl", shot in 1954 at the film studio "Almaty". This film is Shaken Aimanov's second directorial work. The main theme of the film is the news that came to the Kazakh steppes in the twenties - the liberation of the Kazakh woman as a result of the revolution. The main character's attitude to the new life is shown step by step, his aspiration to knowledge reaches the level of an outstanding scientist, and thus the main goal is to describe the formation of personal character in the new environment. His first work as a Director in the film "Legend of love" (1953) originates from the history of the Kazakh national directing. As an actor and Director, Shaken Aimanov Электронный журнал «Столица Науки» ИЮНЬ 6(23) https://www.scientific-capital.ru made a great contribution to the release of about 20 feature films on the screen. With some creative crises that occur in the first films, I was not lost through every film, constantly learning on the edge of the profession of filmmaking. The last screen work of Shaken Aymanov "The end of the ataman" (1970) continues the historical and biographical genre of Kazakh cinema in this period. Script authors - A. Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky, E. Tropinin. The story of the film covers the period of the civil war and is based on historical data. The film was a success and received "excellent" ratings in both Almaty and Moscow. Moscow released the film "The end of the ataman" on the all-Union screen "For the best". The distinctive plot rhythm in Shaken Aymanov's film "Atameken" is accompanied by a deep philosophical poetics of description.

Sergey Abashin Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow) [email protected] Cultural Processes and Transcultural Influences In Contemporary Central Asia Issues addressed and the aims of the text What is this text about? What are the goals of its author? Some preliminary explanations may help shape the expectations of the reader and prevent possible disappointment. My main purpose is to give a three-dimensional overview of the state of cultural affairs in Central Asian societies after the states in the region achieved independence and to describe the main current tendencies defining local cultural processes and transcultural influences in the long term. I am interested in such themes as: culture and the changing political landscape; the institutional environment for culture; culture and education; culture and language; culture and ethnic minorities; culture and religion; the cultural marketplace; culture and business; culture and globalisation. My questions: how is the Soviet experience of "cultural construction” used and transformed in the modern nation-states of Central Asia? what restrictions on cultural production are imposed by the political situation and economic possibilities of these countries? how do the processes of isolationism and globalisation interact? what changes are being wrought by the islamisation of these societies? what is the future potential of secular, European-style, culture? who are the main players in the region’s cultural space? These questions might seem too general, but without considering and judging them, any attempt to understand the essence of events in narrower fields of cultural life is, surely, doomed to failure. In an “analytical note”, a number of general recommendations for the work of international organisations in the cultural sphere of Central Asia are presented.

I analyze different visual and narrative strategies developed by the directors of youth cinema during the Brezhnev period as mechanisms for circumventing ideological control over cultural production.

  • New Russian Cinema
New Russian Cinema By Christina Stojanova Fall 1998 Issue of KINEMA The transition to market economy and the dismantling of the USSR created an unprecedented crisis in Russian film industry. The awesome All Union Ministry of Cinematography (Goskino) was dismembered. This almost paramilitary institution, whose senior officials were also allegedly senior KGB officers, directed, or rather policed, the Soviet film production process with the stick of censorship, and the carrot of lucrative awards. Understandably, the censorship is not going to be sorely missed. What is missed, however, are the generous state budgets and the firm general line, drawn by the military from the Ministry, in accordance with the ever-changing Kremlin ideological vision. Distribution-wise the situation in Russian cinema followed the pattern characteristic for the other post- communist countries. American films, kept for so long beyond the ideological pale, took over the repertoire, occupying around 75% of the programming time, with a tendency to reach 85% during the next decade. In the Russian Federation, the number of film theatres has dwindled from 3,000 to 1,500, and continues to fall. After the production boom from the early 1990s (300 films for 1991-92 alone), the figure has stabilised around 50-60 per year. To say that the government has entirely ceased to finance Russian cinema will be wrong. But the traditional mismanagement of state funding, the need to support an enormous army of redundant administrators, and pay salaries to non-working, tenured film-makers, renders government funding far from sufficient vis-à-vis runaway inflation and constantly rising costs.

Both fi lms tell stories of young war lords during periods of political transition which question old allegiances and loyalties redefi ning national and cultural belongings. Arthur brings the Sax- on invasion to a brief halt in the period of Roman retreat and Mansur (alias Ablai Khan) leads Kazakhstan into freedom in the eighteenth century. Both heroes are grappling with alienation from their origins caused by colonial hegemony. Coping with the instabilities of their hybrid identities they choose opposing ways of building new identities. Arthur Fuqua’s king takes on the challenge of merging various cultural heritages founding a civilization that symbolizes the transnational aspirations of contemporary Europe. Sergei Bodrov‘s Mansur annihilates Kazakh colonial past when he unknowingly kills his brother in arms. Erali‘s sacrifi ce ends the endless disputes of the Kazakhs that originate in their hybrid identity thwarting national restoration. Thus both fi lms serve ambiguous ideological purposes by defi ning a hostile other. The Saxon invaders represent racist Nazis who were defeated in order to create modern Europe. The defeat of the Jungar invaders helps constructing an essentialist historical order in which the creation of Kazachstan appears to be the restoration of a pre-modern nation. Both fi lms show the ideo- logical power of mediaevalism off ering multi-layered methods of addressing a diverse global audience.
