THE PARTICIPANTS We:RE THOSE INVOLVED IN WORK IN THE ARTS WITH THE DISADVANTAGED IN VARIOUS AREAS, AS WELL AS A PSYCHOLOGIST, A SOCIOLOGIST, AN ANTHROPOLOGIST, A RESEARCH SPECIALIST IN ART EDUCATION, AND REPRESENTATIVES OF STATE AND CITY EDUCATION DEPARTMENTS. THE DISCUSSIONS CENTERED AROUND THE THEORETICAL EVIDENCE AND THE DEMONSTRATION PROGRAMS WHICH WERE PRESENTED BY THE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THEM. THE PROGRAMS COVERED A WIDE RANGE, FROM THEATER PRESENTATIONS AND CONCERTS WHICH TRAVEL INTO A NEIGHBORHOOD AND PROGRAMS IN INFORMAL CENTERS TO THOSE IN SPECIAL SCHOOLS. EXAMPLES WERE CITED TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THE ARTS'CAN PROVIDE THE FIRST EXPERIENCE OF POSITIVE ACCOMPLISHMENT AMONG THE DISADVANTAGED, AND FROM THIS CAN DEVELOP A SENSE OF PERSONAL PRIDE LEADING TO OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS. EMPHASIS WAS ON THE FUNCTIONAL USE OF THE ARTS TO ENABLE THE CREATIVITY IN EACH PERSON TO REACH ITS FULLEST POTENTIAL. Although this has beenthe strong belief ofmany artists and of the bestart educators, therehas been little r literatutie and little basicresearch in thisarea.Discussions with tile specialistsin the Arts andHumanities Branch of the United States Office ofEducation and the Officeof Economic Opportunity led to theconviction thata developmental meeting was essential. The objectives of themeeting were to drawupon the experiences of peopleinvolved in themany areas of the arts and education andupon the theoretical evidencein order to isolate the kinds ofmotivation which thearts can provide; to examine on-goingprograms in thisarea;to suggest other programs as demonstrationsor models; to recommend needed research;to find ways ofdisseminating this informa- tion to reach thosewho are responsiblefor education curricula and planning.it was hoped thisconference would .focusna- tional attentionon the role arts experiencescan play in the educational phase of theWar on Povertyand, ultimately, in relation to thelearning prodess ofall children. METHOD In planning such a developmental seminar, itwas con- sidered important that all of the arts be representedand that as far as was possible invited participants represent those working with different groups of the disadvantagedand not only with the urban Negro.Thus individuals who were involved in work with the American Indians, the SpanishAmericans, the poor whites and in rural as well as urban areaswere invited. A psychologist-artist,a sociologist and representatives of art education departments, city and state schoolsystems who were also involved in work in these areas were includedamong the participants.And finally we included specialists in the field of research in art education. The Agenda for the four day conferencewas planned around seven commissionedpapers which are reprinted in full in the following pages.Following each presentation therewas extensive and lively discussion by allparticipants.Following the two days devoted to thesepapers and discussions the thirty-four participantswere divided into two work groups who were charged with the task of considering variousareas of con- cern in depth and in.formulating recommendations foraction. To help in focusing attention during the workgroup sessions five major topic questionswere prepared: 1.In what ways can weuse the arts to improve the learning process generally? 2.What do we need to know about theuse of the arts in meeting the needs of the disadvantaged learner which researchcan help us determine? What kinds of researchare needed? What are the limitations, if any, on whatwe can learn from research in this field? 3.How can we identify the best of theon-going programs (inside or out of the schools) and make the experience gained froma variety of models available nationally? Whatnew programs may need to be developed and mounted? 2 .1.

In the past, I have argued that Elvis fandom is not a neo-religious practice but that attention to a modified version of Durkheim’s theory of religion can, nevertheless, help to explain it as a form of social interaction. I take that argument further here, first by revealing the ethical and analytical advantages of neo-Durkheimian theory, then by pitting this theory against three aspects of Elvis’ sincere engagement with gospel music. Elvis Presley won three Grammy awards for his gospel albums and was the musician who did most to bring the gospel quartet tradition to the mainstream. His eclectic personal ties to spirituality and religion have become a focus of debate within his fan culture. They offer a set of discursive resources through which to explain the emotional impact and social influence of his music. If star musicians are positioned as centres of attention, what happens when they use their privileged position in the spotlight to offer a “spiritual” message? Example 1 gives the tune’s lead sheet, which shows its melody and chord changes. In the first eight-bar phrase, the harmony moves at a slow, two-bar pace, sliding between chords with roots on E, F, and E beneath a repeating fourths-based melody that contracts to an A4–F4 major third in the last two bars. Shorter’s melody quite often emphasizes diatonic and chromatic ninths, elevenths, and thirteenths against the passing harmonies, thereby underscoring the importance of those extensions to the chords.

Ike Okafor-Newsum) Copyright by Norman Michael Goecke 2014 Abstract This thesis examines the complex sociocultural dynamics that surround the concept of jazz theory from two broad perspectives: formalized or academic jazz theory, which emerged as a result of the formal institutionalization of jazz in the academy, and organic or intrinsic jazz theory, which first arose from African American music-making practices. This dichotomy does not suggest that the majority of jazz community members exist at the extremes of either of these two poles. Contrarily, most musicians tend to occupy the grey area somewhere in between. The aim of this study was to shed light on the complex and elusive intersection between formalized and organic approaches to jazz theory. Through an analysis of informal, formal, and virtual (internet-based) jazz music-learning environments, the results offer a thick description of the way in which notions of "jazz theory" affected the social lives of musicians, fostered racialized jazz identities, defined community boundaries, and influenced music-making practices. The paper includes a variety of case studies, such as Miles Davis' experience studying music at Julliard, an analysis of the first methodological theory books published for jazz students and educators, online forums where jazz students discuss music theory, ii and ethnographic data related to modern day jazz theory that I collected from nonacademic and academic jazz learning environments.

The work also investigates the possibility of a common southern sound or auditory essence which may be embedded within all of the musical genres popularly thought to owe their lineage to the American South. The project is documentary in nature with the written component explaining the scholarship and methodology guiding the accompanying film. At the heart of the work are interviews with eleven contemporary musicians and three scholars of southern culture and history.

LAY ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the ability of emergent modes of documentary photography to articulate and resist social and political violence that is characteristic of neoliberalism, for example the domestic militarization and increased incarceration rates, the shrinking of access to the public sphere, and the particular ways in which certain populations become especially vulnerable to such violence. Shifts in photographic production thanks to new media platforms and the reconfigurations of traditional photography genres have produced photographic strategies that are crucially poised to address such issues. The photographers and projects explored in this dissertation employ new ways of visualizing violence, speaking back to the ways that photography can be used to stultify discourse and misrepresent populations, and harnessing innovative modes of proliferating their work to produce new photographic and political communities. ! ! ! ! iii!     A STUDY OF BILL FRISELL THROUGH PAUL MOTIAN’S ON BROADWAY RECORDINGS BY TRAVIS LEWIS DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Music with a concentration in Jazz Performance in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Lawrence Gray, Chair Professor Charles McNeill Assistant Professor Joel Spencer Associate Professor Reynold Tharp Abstract This study examines Bill Frisell’s work through an analysis of his improvised solos on Paul Motian’s albums On Broadway Volumes 1, 2, 3, Bill Evans, and Monk in Motian while simultaneously examining Frisell’s guitar technique and his musical influences. The analysis of his solos on Motian’s album draw from a selection of twenty transcriptions with a focus on five elements: 1) Controlled Dissonance, 2) Syncopation, 3) Melody, Sequencing and Cells, 4) Note Bends, and 5) Dyads of Sixths and Thirds.
