REFERENCES • . 261 8 ABSTRACT Using the tools of feminist literary criticism, this dissertation examines the female domestic servant in the writings of Charles Dickens and Sigmund Freud. I have read the female retainer in the Dickensian canon as one of the domestic ideal's most useful signifiers. Although Dickens certainly writes from the assumptions of his own time and posits over-determined gender assignments, his texts, as do those of Sigmund Freud, frequently erupt with what Julia Kristeva has dubbed the messy semiotic (Kristeva 1986, 99). Both Freud and Dickens speak through intriguing circumlocutions, in which the very ideologies seemingly sustained are subverted. The female servant in the works of both Freud and Dickens often signs repressed desire. She is the liminal figure between lower class earthiness and bourgeois decorum. She may assume positions between the maternal and the paternal. She may function as as either chastising adult or naughty child. She is an outsider in the familial cell, yet she is part of the most private and intimate spaces. For the twentieth century reader, who oscillates in code switching and social placement, the female servant of the Victorian novel is a relevant and stimulating hermeneutic configuration. 9 CHAPTER I LIMINALITY AND SERVITUDE "What is socially peripheral is often symbolically central." The family never was in any of Freud's texts, completely closed off from questions of economic class. And the most insistent locus of that intrusion into the family circle (intrusion of the symbolic into the imaginary) is the maid/governess/ nurse ••• she is the hole in the social cell. Old anarchist slogan. 10 Teach me my God and King In all things thee to see And what I do in anything To do as if for thee A servant with this clause Makes drudgery divine Who sweeps the room as for thy laws Makes that and the action fine The Handy Book for the Young General Servant The Dirty Cleaners Servants proliferate in Victorian fiction. They figure as a sea of unofficial non-persons and constitute an entire captive population within the victorian novel. I believe that their presence is intensely intriguing and that their textual vitality is both diverse and extensive. They function as comic relief. They work as extensions of their mistresses, and as devoted feudals they profit from the benevolence of the mistress or master figure. Frequently they mirror readerly aggression. They are sources of paranoia as they exercise power inappropriate to their station. As insistent watchers of the master class, they provide an unsettling level of voyeurism and make up an inverted police force in the victorian household. The most interesting signifying traces left by female servant representations in the novel 11 of the Victorian era, are, it seems to me, those in the liminal places hinted at in the fault lines between erotic and social content; between surface level and 'psychic economy; between conscious logic and unconscious intensities. Female servants in Victorian novels walk through established categories in ,order to become the manipulators of plot structure--as does Nelly of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights or Esther of Bleak House. Through hypergamy, they challenge the organization of patriarchal order--as does Richardson's Pamela. As the "invisible" and silent supports of a social system in which they cannot partake, in the fuzzy state between taxonomies, they can be read as both victims and as sinister agents of power. 1 Unclean and often polluting members of the lower orders they are the ones who whiten the front step of the bourgeois home (Huggett 106) and separate the home-as- romantic-refuge from the anxieties of the ruthless and competitive mercantile world.

Dickens had become popular through his Sketches by Boz(1816), which were a series of sketches of London life, with strong emphasis on character portrayal. The kind of sociological- ironic tone of the present novel, part journalism and part work in the great tradition of the novel, shows the overwhelming passion of Dickens forsocial character analysis. The powerful portraits to come— in David Copperfield, Great Expectations, or Oliver Twist—are heralded in The Pickwick Papers. Story Mr. Samuel Pickwick is the organizing principle of this episodic novel which tracks some of the adventures of its protagonist. Samuel Pickwick is not a dominating figure, but rather a spirited enthusiast (in the spirit of his time) for the English countryside and country ways, a sentimentalist, and a compassionate appreciator of the eccentricities and local colorings of the English people. Not only is Pickwick wealthy, but he is ‘administrative,’ for it is he who enlists three of his friends to join him on coach jaunts throughout the English countryside. In appearance and manner Pickwick is, like all Dickens’ characters, a broad caricature: the man ‘who had agitated the scientific world with his Theory of Tittlebats,’ an amateur naturalist picking up, as were many in the times of Wordsworth, privileged amateurism, and the thoughts of Charles Darwin. Travelling throughout England by coach, stopping at Inns for the night, Pickwick is in constant touch with what seems to him the most agreeable face of his land.

    THE TERRIBLE TWINS – how Freud and Marx legitimised our throwaway society1 One of the difficulties facing eco-critical discourse, which is at the centre of this conference, is to make that leap – an extrapolation or Kierkegaardian necessity – from theory or literary excerpt to the field of action, that is from the passive reader, the self, the “ego”, to a sense of responsibility towards the environment, to “eco”. I propose to look at how some ideas in the thought systems of seminal thinkers like Freud and Marx were used to create in different ways, sometimes unwittingly to their originators – were they alive to peruse them – a discourse of a false self or ego, leading to the present state of individual unaccountability towards the real world, the environment, or eco. I will draw on particular expostulatory works, among the vast literature, which have been compiled in recent years on the questions which readers have interrogated and which are germane here, i.e. “Freud on Women”, edited by Elizabeth Young-Bruehl, and “Why Marx was Right” – by Terry Eagleton: both provide readings of Marx and Freud which form a background to this essay. I call Freud and Marx the terrible twins because they share broad cultural similarities and because of the huge dissemination of their works in the academy, and particularly in the wider society, where they interacted with each other, and where often problematic areas in their discourse had been simplified for rapid communication through the mass media and popular understanding. 1 This essay is based on a paper given to the Ego to Eco conference at NUI Galway in June, 2011, and has been updated to include references to scholars and academics who over the years have contributed to the questions outlined here 1 The idea of the self in Freud is entirely subjective, but supported by some empirical evidence, while in Marx the idea of the self belongs entirely to the objective, empirical discourse of scientific philosophy or epistemology.

She is faithful to David and his James Steerforth family all her life, never abandoning David, his mother, or Miss Betsey.

The project relies on the following self-castration formula: the author’s recognition of herself as a being defined by lack. This lack refers to the inability to signify within the phallocentric system of language. In addition to this initial recognition, the female author realizes writing for public consumption emulates the process of castration but, nevertheless, initiates the writing process as a way to resituate the origin of castration—placing it in her own hand. The female writer also recognizes her production as feminine and, therefore works to castrate her own femininity in her pursuit to create texts that are liberated from the critical assignation of “feminine productions.” Female self-castration is a violent act of displacement.

    Charles’ Childhood His Childhood Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 in Portsmouth. His parents were John and Elizabeth Dickens. Charles was the second of their eight children . John was a clerk in a payroll office of the navy. He and Elizabeth were an outgoing, social couple. They loved parties, dinners and family functions. In fact, Elizabeth attended a ball on the night that she gave birth to Charles. Mary Weller was an early influence on Charles. She was hired to care for the Dickens children. Her bedtime stories, stories she swore were quite true, featured people like Captain Murder who would make pies of out his wives. Young Charles Dickens Finances were a constant concern for the family. The costs of entertaining along with the expenses of having a large family were too much for John's salary. In fact, when Charles was just four months old the family moved to a smaller home to cut expenses. At a very young age, despite his family's financial situation, Charles dreamed of becoming a gentleman. However when he was 12 it looked like his dreams would never come true. John Dickens was arrested and sent to jail for failure to pay a debt. Also, Charles was sent to work in a shoe-polish factory. (While employed there he met Bob Fagin. Charles later used the name in Oliver Twist.) Charles was deeply marked by these experiences. He rarely spoke of this time of his life. Luckily the situation improved within a year. Charles was released from his duties at the factory and his father was released from jail.
