Dear Customer, The Europadisc offices happen to be situated above a laundrette, which is lovely in winter, but not quite so pleasant when the temperatures are already sweltering outside! As I write, forecasters are threatening thirty degrees once again, but we plough on, perhaps just a little thankful that business is slightly quieter at this time of year… Two eagerly awaited Elgar titles arrive this month: Barenboim’s Dream of Gerontius, recorded live in Berlin last September with the stellar cast of Andrew Staples (as Gerontius), Thomas Hampson and Catherine Wyn-Rogers; and another fascinating issue from Somm exploring his works for military band, once again including some on CD for the first time. Other July highlights for us include Brabbins’s second instalment of Walton for Hyperion (see ‘Disc of the Month’ below); a beautifully compiled set of Kurtag’s works for ensemble and choir on ECM New Series; a second volume of Haydn String Quartets from the superb Chiaruscuro Quartet on BIS; works for cello and piano by Faure, again on BIS; and a follow-up to Veronique Gens’s hugely successful recital disc, ‘Neere’, entitled ‘Visions’ and featuring French Romantic arias by the likes of David, Godard, Saint-Saens, Franck and Massenet.

  • Summer 2007 a Magazine for Alumni and Friends of the Eastman School of Music from the Editor
SUMMER 2007 A MAGAZINE FOR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS OF THE EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC FROM THE EDITOR “Beautiful problems” When I am putting together the many different items that make up an issue of Eastman Notes, I sometimes ask myself if there is a through-line (or if you prefer a musical term, a Leitmotif) that truly ties them together, and makes the maga- zine something more than an Eastman miscellany. When I listened to the distinguished composer Mario Davidovsky, who vis- ited Eastman this spring as the composition department’s fi rst Howard Hanson Composer-in-Residence, I took copious notes, of course. In going over them be- fore writing my article on the event, I was struck by a scribbled phrase: beauti- ful problems. This was Davidovsky’s own description of his compositions, but he NOTES seemed to be referring to the process and challenge of composing a piece, not the fi nished work. I can easily see why a composer, whose approach to his work Volume 25, Number 2 is both craftsmanlike and intuitive, might see his job in this light. Summer 2007 The phrase stayed with me long after the Davidovsky piece was written (see page 20). I found myself applying it to other events I was writing about for this Editor issue, in which people offer imaginative solutions for some pressing questions David Raymond and problems. Contributing writers Jamal Rossi • At Commencement 2007, two musicians addressed questions of immediate Christopher Seaman concern to young people leaving school, commencing a career, and beginning Contributing photographers to address the challenges of life.

  • 2019/20 Season
2019/20 SEASON APRIL - JULY 2020 2 • Director’s Introduction • 3 We are looking forward to a summer packed full of fun, ambitious and exceptional performances. Leading soprano Roberta Invernizzi gathers a host of friends to celebrate women Baroque composers in April, while acclaimed Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes returns for his second appearance in the season, performing a solo recital for two evenings in a row. Wigmore Hall continues to champion contemporary composers and emerging artists, and in May we combine the two endeavours in a Composer in Focus day featuring musicians from the Royal Northern College of Music. Saturday 9 May will spotlight the work of ‘the renaissance woman of contemporary British music’, Errollyn Wallen. Further explorations of the music of Britten, Brahms and Beethoven thread through the summer programme, including the culmination of Jonathan Biss’ Beethoven sonata cycle, a concert dedicated to Britten’s Canticles with Allan Clayton, Iestyn Davies and others, and more Brahms from the Castalian String Quartet, joined in April by Nils Mönkemeyer and Ursula Smith. Sir András Schiff will lecture on and perform Schubert’s D960 in April and Beethoven’s final piano sonatas in June.Rachel Podger continues her focus on Bach in her residency, and the wonderful Concertgebouw Winds with Jeroen Bal on piano presents a BBC lunchtime concert at the end of April. Les Talens Lyriques presents a programme of love songs with renowned tenor Julian Prégardien in May, followed less than a week later by Lionel Meunier’s ensemble Vox Luminis and a programme featuring more Britten – his Hymn to St Cecilia and Sacred and Profane top and tail the performance.
