The cultural landscape of Nowy Wiśnicz is a precious and fragile reminder of the distant past. Formed in its basic lay-out in the 17th century, according to a design of the Italian architect Matteo Trapola, it has survived to the present day without any significant changes. The most important of Wiśnicz’s histo- rical monuments is undoubtedly the castle which dominates the town. Nearby there is a wooden manor house from the middle of the 19th centu- ry, known as Koryznówka, and inside it the Com- Photo: JerzyPhoto: Ochoński/photospoland.com memorative Museum of Jan Matejko, who was a frequent guest in Wiśnicz. We especially encourage you to spend free time in the centre of Nowy Wiśnicz. The Wiśnicz market square is an exceptional place which appeals with the beauty of its architecture as well as the parti- cular small-town atmosphere. Walking around the square, you can admire the beauty of historic buil- dings among greenery, rest in the shade of huge chestnut trees, and also find out much about the history of the town and its inhabitants. In the years 1975-1980 the building was completely renovated along with its furnishings, and in 1981, thanks to the efforts of its owners, a museum was opened inside. In it you can view 18th-19th century furniture, paintings, sketches and other objects that recall the periods in which Jan Matejko stayed in the Wiśnicz area. The former monastery of the Discalced Carmelites, currently a prison A dominant element of the Wiśnicz landscape are the former buildings of the monastery of the Discalced (barefoot) Carmelites erected by Stanisław Lubomirski after 1621 as a thanksgi- ving for the victory at Chocim. Since the mona- stery was closed in 1786 it has been the home of a strict-regime Correctional Centre. Situated in the middle of the buildings, the Monastery Church of Christ the Saviour was an exceptio- nal monument of baroque art. Of its architec- ture only the seven-metre walls have survived, as the church itself was destroyed by the Na- zis during the Second World War. JEWISH HISTORICAL INSTITUTE BULLETIN NO. 75 (1970) SZYMON DATNER GERMAN NAZI CRIMES AGAINST JEWS WHO ESCAPED FROM THE GHETTOES “LEGAL” THREATS AND ORDINANCES REGARDING JEWS AND THE POLES WHO HELPED THEM Among other things, the “final solution of the Jewish question” required that Jews be prohibited from leaving the ghettoes they were living in—which typically were fenced off and under guard. The occupation authorities issued inhumane ordinances to that effect. In his ordinance of October 15, 1941, Hans Frank imposed draconian penalties on Jews who escaped from the ghettoes and on Poles who would help them escape or give them shelter: “§ 4b (1) Jews who leave their designated quarter without authorisation shall be punished by death. The same penalty shall apply to persons who knowingly shelter such Jews. (2) Those who instigate and aid and abet shall be punished with the same penalty as the perpetrator; acts attempted shall be punished as acts committed. A penalty of severe prison sentence or prison sentence may be imposed for minor offences. (3) Sentences shall be passed by special courts.” 1 In the reality of the General Government (GG), § 4b (3) was never applied to runaway Jews. They would be killed on capture or escorted to the nearest police, gendarmerie, Gestapo or Kripo station and, after being identified as Jews and tortured to give away those who helped or sheltered them, summarily executed. Many times the same fate befell Poles, too, particularly those living in remote settlements and woodlands. The cases of Poles who helped Jews, which were examined by special courts, raised doubts even among the judges of this infamous institution because the only penalty stipulated by law (death) was so draconian.

CENTRE FOR REGIONAL AND LOCAL ANALYSES REGIONAL INVESTMENT ATTRACTIVENESS 2012 Lesser Poland voivodship Dr hab. Hanna Godlewska-Majkowska, Ph. D. university professor at the Warsaw School of Economics Agnieszka Komor, Ph.D. Patrycjusz Zarębski, Ph.D. Magdalena Typa, M.A. 2012 Warsaw, October 2012 Regional investment attractiveness 2012 Introduction This report has been prepared thanks to the application of results of scientific research conducted since 2002 by the Institute of Enterprise, Collegium of Business Administration of the Warsaw School of Economics, under the supervision of Prof. H. Godlewska-Majkowska, Ph.D. All Authors are core members of the team that develops the methodology of calculating regional investment attractiveness in order that important characteristics of regions are captured as closely as possible both in general terms and from a point of view of specificity of a given kind of business activity as well as a size of investment. Potential investment attractiveness (PAI) indices measure the location-specific advantages of regions. In their simplified version they are calculated for territorial units of various levels of statistical division of the country (gminas/communes, poviats/counties, subregions, voivodships/regions). These are PAI1 indices, which refer to the whole regional/national economy (PAI1_GN) and selected sections: C – manufacturing industry, G – trade and repair, I – tourism and catering, M – professional, scientific and technical services. Besides, some indices are only calculated for voidoships on the basis of much more characteristics available on the regional or macroregional level. This allows us to evaluate their investment attractiveness in a much broader context. These are PAI2 indices, which are calculated both from a general point of view and with reference to the above mentioned sections of the economy (PAI2_C, PAI2_G, PAI2_I, PAI2_M).

PL ISSN 0081-6434 studia geomorphologica carpatho-balcanica vol. lV, 2021 : 153 – 184. ADAM ŁaJcZaK (KraKÓW) CHANGES OF THE VISTULA RIVER CHANNEL PATTERN AND OVERBANK ACCUMULATION RATE IN THE CARPATHIAN FORELAND (SOUTH POLAND) UNDER HUMAN IMPACT Abstract : the rate of overbank accumulationth in the Vistula floodplain within the carpathian Foreland has increased since at least the 16 century as a result of drainage basin deforestation (mainly in the carpathian portion) and agricultural use of this area. however, since the 1850s, additional causes have included deepening of the Vistula channel and its tributaries (mainly the carpathian ones) initiated by regulation works which delivered additional sediment for overbank accumulation within the inter-embankment zone. since the 1950s, a rapid decrease in the overbank accumulation rate was noted. this resulted from the retention of the majority of the sediment by deep reservoirs on the carpathian tributaries of the Vistula, reforestation of- the carpathian portion of the drainage basin, and the slowing down of the rate of deepening of the Vistula channel. an estimate was made of the differentiation of the rate of overbank accu mulation within the inter-embankment zone in the longitudinal profile of the study section of the Vistula. the author proposed a modified model of temporal change of the rate of overbank accumulation in section of the course of the Vistula studied, distinguishing a stage in which changeKeywords was influenced by regulation works. : overbank accumulation, floodplain, inter-embankment zone, inter-groyne basin, river regulation, river Vistula, carpathian Foreland INTRODUCTION accumulation of sediment transported by mountain rivers on floodplains in mountain forelands has occurred as a result of increasing human impact during the recent centuries (Wolman 1967; gregory 1987; starkel 1987a,- 1994, 1995a, 2001b, 2005, 2014; Łajczak 1995a, 1999; czajka 2000; Warowna 2003; Łajczak et al.

Zuzanna Schnepf-Kołacz Polish Help to Jews in the Countryside during the German Occupation. A Sketch Using the Example of the Righteous among the Nations1 There is a challenge the researcher dealing with the issue of provision of help to Jews in the Polish countryside during the German occupation has to face – the base of sources is highly diverse and it fails to provide an unambiguous image because it includes almost exclusively personal documents.2 For unlike in towns and cities, in the countryside help was provided by individuals, who were nei- ther supported, nor inanced, nor organized in any institutions. Consequently, the documents of the Polish or Jewish underground include only reports regard- ing the general situation in the countryside and we will not ind any detailed presentation of the issue of help there. Autobiographic Jewish sources offer the greatest amount of information. There is but a handful of the most precious texts as far as insight in the occu- pation-period situation is concerned. These are diaries written in hiding in the countryside.3 Postwar testimonies and memoirs are the most numerous 1 This article is an abridged version of the text originally published in Zarys krajobra- zu. Wieś polska wobec zagłady Żydów 1942–1945, ed. Barbara Engelking and Jan Grabowski (Warsaw: Stowarzyszenie Centrum Badań nad Zagładą Żydów, 2011), 195–258 (publisher’s note). 2 I use the term “personal document” in its broader meaning. For me a personal document is any document containing a description of a state of mind of a given person. • Lipnica Murowana Was Built in the 14Th Century on a Cruciform Plan
    1. St. Andrew’s Church in Lipnica Murowana was built in the 14th century on a cruciform plan. The nave and the chancel form the longer part of the building. There are side chapels both on the right and left side halfway along the church, forming the arms of the cross. A sacristy was later added on the left side of the chancel, as viewed from the main entrance. The whole church building is 28 meters long. At the widest, that is across the side chapels, it is 20 meters wide. A 31-meter-high tower rises above the facade. The church is covered with a gable roof made of new ceramic tiles of brick-red colour. The walls are plastered and painted cream. The facade was built of irregular blocks of sandstone. The last renovation took place between 2009 and 2011. The frontal wall of the facade is supported with two massive buttresses. They are several meters high masonry elements that reinforce the sides of the building. Above the facade and the vestibule ascends a massive quadrilateral tower. It is plastered. There is a clock at the top of each of its walls. Light-coloured hands cruise around black dial plates with Roman numerals. Beneath the clocks, there are semicircular windows without panes. The facade features a window topped with a soft arch. It is filled with stained glass. Underneath the window is the main entrance. The stone arch-shaped portal is an original medieval element. The entrance is guarded by a black forged gate. The side chapel on the right has one window and a vestibule with a door.
