In her capacity as Academic Coordinator for Critical Culture Gender & Race Studies at Washington State University (WSU) in Pullman, Rose generously offered her wealth of knowledge and experience to help me navigate the white waters of academia on so many occasions that I have lost count. As a friend, she patiently lent a sympathetic ear, wise counsel, and moral support—lifting my spirits on some occasions and sharing my joy during others. Alys and I first met as fellow graduate students at Summer Field School in 2011. Our friendship deepened over the years as we bounced ideas off each other in long walks after class, attended the 2013 Oregon California Trail Association (OCTA) national conference together, and shared personal experiences in and out of academia. I sorely missed her companionship when she moved from the Pullman campus to Vancouver to finish her studies, but I take comfort in knowing that we are never more than a phone call away from catching up. iii My sincere thanks go out to each of the five members of my outstanding committee: Rich King, Rory Ong, Orlan Svingen, Laurie Mercier, and Mary Collins. I am fortunate indeed to have such a gifted and versatile panel of advisors and mentors. First, I would like to thank the Chair of my Committee, Rich King. His steady hand on the till over the past five years helped keep me on track. With his background in Cultural Anthropology, experiences as Chair of Comparative Ethnic Studies (CES) and Interim Chair of Critical Culture, Gender & Race Studies (CCGRS) during their challenging transition that combined three departments, and his impeccable academic credentials that include deep research on the topics of race and racism, Dr. King’s guidance and intellect inform every page of this project. His insightful, constructive observations in the final labors of this project hold a value beyond any measure that my words can hope to express. I have known Rory Ong since 2001, and I could not have survived all the turbulence of my initial forays into studies on culture and race (or the seven-year interruption that ensued in 2003) without his patient guidance. After my return in 2010, whether we were talking after the American Studies Colloquiums, during a formal appointment in his office, or simply while walking across campus, Rory took the time to address my concerns, allay my anxieties, and channel my enthusiasm while encouraging my research and ultimately guiding my queries in constructive directions. Always gracious, Rory nevertheless always kept me honest. While I met Orlan Svingen more recently in 2011 when I attended his Summer Field School in Virginia City, Montana, this project would not exist without our association which gave me a first-row seat to observe his passionate but reasoned role as a scholarly advocate on behalf of tribal nations that dates back decades. It was during the 2011 summer field school that he held in Virginia City that my focus and direction began to crystallize, and I found myself iv deeply engaged and profoundly committed to following in his footsteps while adding perspectives garnered from my earlier and current experiences in culture and race studies. Orlan’s most recent fifteen years of work with the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, and more specifically the Lemhi Shoshone (Sacajawea’s people), coupled with his general knowledge about and experience with U.S. tribal history and law garnered from decades of previous work with other tribal nations transcends its initial importance to both this project and to my overall sense of purpose. Quite simply, he has been a guiding light in more ways than I can count. Similarly, Mary Collins has illuminated my path through the complex landscape of tribal communities in today’s tangled network of federal, state, and local interactions and subsequent relationships with tribal people, particularly as we constantly redefine the changing role of anthropologists in a highly sensitive environment of political and social tensions. Her introductions to other luminaries in the field such as Anthropologist Darby Stapp and Coeur d’ Alene Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) Linda Wagner opened invaluable avenues of awareness that I could not have accessed on my own. The presence of members of various local tribes at her retirement party and their sincere gifts of gratitude offer a rare testimonial to the level of respect that she holds in their hearts and their communities—and now, in mine. As a professor on the Vancouver campus, Laurie Mercier and I had fewer opportunities to interact, but those rare moments yielded genuine pearls of wisdom. As former President of the Oral History Association, Laurie brings unique perspectives to the table in that regard. Although the physical distance between the Vancouver and Pullman campuses restricted our face-to-face interactions and opportunities for her to contribute and enlighten presented less frequently; when they did, Laurie never failed to offer highly relevant, insightful comments at every stage of this endeavor. She always managed to provoke deep contemplations and astute self-evaluations that v pointed me in profoundly productive directions of inquiry for which I am, and will remain, deeply grateful. Special recognition goes out to Victor Villanueva who has maintained a presence in my life as a constant and supportive mentor from the beginning of my doctoral education in 2001— sometimes active front and center stage, and other times, quietly supporting and inspiring in the wings. As one of my staunchest allies and steadfast, enthusiastic supporters, I am proud to count Victor as a lifelong colleague and dear friend. However, current discussion of immigration, legal and illegal, and the philosophical underpinnings is ‘lost in translation’, not necessarily on ideological lines, but on political orientation. In this paper we reexamine the philosophical underpinnings of the melting pot versus multiculturalism as antecedents and precedents of current immigration debate and how the core issues are lost in translation. We take a brief look at immigrants and the economy to situate the current immigration debate. We then discuss the two philosophical approaches to immigration and how the understanding of the philosophical foundations can help streamline the current immigration debate.     9 Tokyo Standardization, ludic language use and nascent superdiversity Patrick Heinrich and Rika Yamashita The study of language in the city has never been a prominent subject in Japanese sociolinguistics. The negligence of city sociolinguistics in Japan notwithstanding, there is a wide range of issues to be found in Tokyo, which reveal the intricate ways in which language and society relate to one another.1 In this chapter, we discuss two interrelated issues. Firstly, we outline the case of language standardization, which subsequently led to various destandardization phenomena and ludic language use. Secondly, we discuss how language diversity in Tokyo has grown in recent years and how it is no longer swept under the carpet and hidden. Tokyoites, too, are diversify- ing as an effect. We shall start, though, with a brief sociolinguistic history of Tokyo. From feudal Edo to Tokyo as a global city There exists no such place as “Tokyo City”. There is “Inner Tokyo”, comprised of 23 wards; there is “Metropolitan Tokyo” made up of the 23 wards and the Tama region; and there is “Greater Tokyo”, which refers to Metropolitan Tokyo plus the surrounding prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa and Saitama. The Tama region, rural until 1920, is now home to one third of the population of Tokyo Metropolis, while Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama prefecture have doubled their population over the past 50 years. Greater Tokyo comprises more than 35 million inhabitants. It is the largest urban center on earth. One third of the Japanese population lives there on less than 4% of the Japanese territory – and the number of inhabitants continues to grow.

    Latin America JOHN GLEDHILL, The University of Manchester ‘Latin’ America is a region constructed in a context of imperial rivalries and disputes about how to build ‘modern’ nations that made it an ‘other America’ distinct from ‘Anglo’ America. Bringing together people without previous historical contact, the diversity of its societies and cultures was increased by the transatlantic slave trade and later global immigration. Building on the constructive relationship that characterises the ties between socio-cultural anthropology and history in the region today, this entry discusses differences in colonial relations and cultural interaction between European, indigenous, and Afro-Latin American people in different countries and the role of anthropologists in nation-building projects that aimed to construct national identities around ‘mixing’. It shows how anthropologists came to emphasise the active role of subordinated social groups in making Latin America’s ‘new peoples’. Widespread agrarian conflicts and land reforms produced debates about the future of peasant farmers, but new forms of capitalist development, growing urbanisation, and counter-insurgency wars led to an era in which indigenous identities were reasserted and states shifted towards a multicultural politics that also fostered Afro-Latin American movements. Anthropology has enhanced understanding of the diversity, complexity, and contradictions of these processes.     “Intermarriage” Why we study Intermarriage Family systems reproduce race by insisting upon endogamy, or marriage within the group. Racial intermarriage, the opposite of endogamy, tends to undermine racial barriers. In any society in which race is important, racial intermarriage will be a focus of legal, social and political interest. As the United States has been a society deeply divided by race from its very beginning as a nation in which slavery was practiced, the issue of intermarriage has always been important in the United States. The Racial Caste System and the 19th Century: Intermarriage as the Implicit Threat Before the civil war, the vast majority of blacks in the United States were slaves. Although there had always been some sexual relationships between white (male) slave owners and black (female) slaves, white society worked diligently to make these relationships invisible. White American society adopted what they called the “one-drop rule,” which meant that anyone with as much as “one drop” of nonwhite blood could not be considered white. By legal definition, if a white slave master made a black slave pregnant, her child was black (due to the “one-drop rule”) and a slave as well. Formal marriage was generally not possible among slaves (because slaves had no legal standing), and therefore formal marriage between free whites and slaves was also impossible. One irony of the one-drop rule was that it was created to clarify racial distinctions but the rule left white racial status always vulnerable. The discovery of some previously unknown brown or dark ancestor (or even an ancestor who was remembered by someone as dark), would rob all descendants of their whiteness, and therefore of their property and their rights.

    History Commentary - The Sacagawea Mystique: Her Age, Name, Role and Final Destiny Columbia Magazine, Fall 1999: Vol. 13, No. 3 By Irving W. Anderson EDITOR'S NOTE The United States Mint has announced the design for a new dollar coin bearing a conceptual likeness of Sacagawea on the front and the American eagle on the back. It will replace and be about the same size as the current Susan B. Anthony dollar but will be colored gold and have an edge distinct from the quarter. Irving W. Anderson has provided this biographical essay on Sacagawea, the Shoshoni Indian woman member of the Lewis and Clark expedition, as background information prefacing the issuance of the new dollar. THE RECORD OF the 1804-06 "Corps of Volunteers on an Expedition of North Western Discovery" (the title Lewis and Clark used) is our nation's "living history" legacy of documented exploration across our fledgling republic's pristine western frontier. It is a story written in inspired spelling and with an urgent sense of purpose by ordinary people who accomplished extraordinary deeds. Unfortunately, much 20th-century secondary literature has created lasting though inaccurate versions of expedition events and the roles of its members. Among the most divergent of these are contributions to the exploring enterprise made by its Shoshoni Indian woman member, Sacagawea, and her destiny afterward. The intent of this text is to correct America's popular but erroneous public image of Sacagawea by relating excerpts of her actual life story as recorded in the writings of her contemporaries, people who actually knew her, two centuries ago.
