Leading the Way... Leading the Way LEADING T HE W AY ... SUMMER 2020 | JULY / AUGUST As we mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of A Letter To our oasis of Jewish life, we echo your profound sense of pride at how The Hampton Synagogue has led the Our Congregation... way, particularly in serving both our congregational family and the global Jewish community through the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have heard from so many of you that our televised services and programs on JBS TV bring you comfort, inspiration, and even have been “a spiritual lifeline” in these trying times. With over 200,000 homes across America and around the world viewing our Shabbat and holiday services, we have truly established the global congregation. At the same time, The Hampton Synagogue continues to serve our congregants here in the Hamptons whom, from the earliest days of the pandemic, found safe haven in the vibrant, beautiful community we built together. We have ensured the continuity of our local kosher supervision and eruv maintenance. And we are especially proud that, in close coordination with local and state officials, The Hampton Synagogue was the first major synagogue in New York State to reopen. Governor Andrew Cuomo's appointment of Rabbi Schneier to his Interfaith Advisory Council for the reopening of houses of worship and religious institutions in New York State is testament to the leadership we have shown throughout this period. Within this brochure, you will find our acclaimed programming for July and August that continues to “make the ordinary extraordinary,” even in these most extraordinary times. With the special assistance of Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, we present an exciting, new drive-in venue at Francis Gabreski Airport for our summer-long Jewish Film Festival. The Humble Toast, the most talked-about kosher food truck in the Tri-State area, will be at each screening, providing the perfect complement to a wonderful family weekend experience. Our 24th Annual Author Discussion Series will continue in-person at the synagogue, in addition to being televised nationwide on JBS TV. Our full schedule of stimulating classes will continue, both live and online. Your accolades for our achievements are manifested by your generous response to the 2020 Annual Gift Campaign. Particularly, we thank the members of our Pillars Society, whose annual gifts of $18,000-$200,000 express their supreme dedication to The Hampton Synagogue. Your magnanimous support is especially inspiring to us as we continue to lead the way. • The Presidents' Tailor
The Presidents’ Tailor FROM AUSCHWITZ TO THE WHITE HOUSE Synopsis Martin Greenfield survived the Holocaust to become America’s greatest tailor. Now, at 92, his legacy is at stake. Can his sons Jay and Tod modernize their father’s bespoke menswear empire to compete in the age of fast and cheap without sacrificing his legendary craftsmanship? Maxmilian Grünfeld learned to sew while mending shirts for SS soldiers in Auschwitz when he was fifteen. Four years later, he re-invented himself as the American Martin Greenfield, and was making suits for the former general and future US president Dwight D. Eisenhower, who liberated him from Buchenwald in 1945. The Presidents’ Tailor is an hour- long documentary about how one man transformed into the other against all odds. With his infectious smile, resourcefulness, and insistence on “quality with intrinsic value”, Martin Greenfield quickly rose from his humble beginnings as a floor boy at the GGG menswear factory in Brooklyn to become the highbrow tailor of choice for US presidents and celebrities alike. But times are changing. Today, Greenfield Clothiers stands alone as a beacon in the once thriving men’s tailoring industry in New York City. The Presidents’ Tailor is a poignant reminder of the distinguished craftsmanship which once gave birth to the golden age of American manufacturing. Martin Greenfield “You have to smile if you’re happy. That’s when I started smiling, and I never stopped.” - Martin Greenfield Martin Greenfield has always loved to work with his hands. His tailoring career began, ironically enough, in Auschwitz, when a fellow prisoner taught him to repair a guard’s old shirt.

Just Us A publication from Supreme Court Civil Branch, First J.D. New York County and New York County Clerk’s Office Remembrance Issue No. 4, May 2015 Introduction by Hon. Martin Shulman, Program Co-Chair with Hon. Deborah Kaplan On Tuesday, April 28, 2015 [6th of lyyar 5775], the Jewish Lawyers’ Guild, Supreme Court, Civil Branch, New York County (Gender Fairness Committee), and the New York County Clerk’s Office sponsored our annual Holocaust Remembrance Program. Our first such Remembrance Program was presented in 1994, and these programs have become a vitally important tradition in our court. I was most privileged to moderate this year’s program and in the process offer some thoughts of my own. I noted that President Obama - who had recently toured the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum with Holocaust survivor and renowned author Elie Weisel - characterized the museum as a reminder that nations too often do not do enough to prevent atrocities, and that said, even as Mr. Weisel challenged the President to do more about the killing of civilians in Syria and the threat posed by Iran, the President ruefully confessed that “it’s a bitter truth. [that] too often the world has failed to prevent the killing of innocents on a massive scale, and we are haunted by the atrocities that we did not stop and the lives we did not save.” Remembrance Issue Editor: Loren Schwartz 2 In my remarks I also acknowledged Irwin Coffer, a journalist, who wrote that the genocide of European Jewry succeeded not only because of a culture of hate and an industry of death perpetrated by the Nazis, but also because of ubiquitous crimes of indifference.

Tailor Shimon Rosenberg - Turx (...and Advisor) to Presidents The Incredible Story of Martin Greenfield Martin Greenfield is a legend in men’s clothing. He has hand-tailored suits for Presidents from Eisenhower to Obama, as well as for famous celebrities. But if Martin’s suits are famous, his personal story is less well-known. Martin came to America with nothing, started as a floor boy in a Brooklyn suit factory and worked his way up to be one of the most celebrated tailors in the world.
