Des enquêtes et analyses de type variées s’y succèdent qui, dans leurs différences,s’équi- librent et ne laissent pas parfois de se ressembler. Apartir d’échantillonnages,Alain Cernuschi révèle la transforma- tion d’articles de l’Encyclopédie issus de la Cyclopaedia de Chambers mais inspirés,parfois de manière redoublée,enamont ou en aval, par des Mémoires de l’Académie des Sciences.Ducôté des mathématiques,c’est le développement vers le Supplément puis vers la Méthodique qui retient Christian Gilain. Il ynote,d’un dictionnaire àl’autre,lacomplexité des désignations et des arbres figurés en une période où s’affirme l’analyse. S’agissant du baron d’Holbach, le propos d’Alain Sandrier concerne un autre type de comparaison :entre les nombreuses contributions «philo- sophiques »que le baron aélaborées pour l’Encyclopédie, puis celles qu’il ainsérées dans l’Histoire des deux Indes,puis au service de son entreprise de plus en plus affirmée de militantisme clandestin. Leur teneur est sensiblement différente àlamesure,après 1765, de la lutte anti-religieuse et politique menée par d’Holbach. D’Alembert, relayé par Condorcet, Bossut et Charles,nepouvait pas ne pas paraître dans l’article de Christian Gilain. Il est en outre,lui Jean Le Rond, enfant trouvé, le référent général d’un tout autre type de recherches,celui que Françoise Launay aconsacré àsa«famille », et particulièrement àEtiennette-Gabrielle Pontieux, plus connue sous le nom de madame Rousseau, femme d’un vitrier,samère adoptive.On suit tel Watson, c’est-à-dire avec admiration, les résumés précis et les patientes investigations d’une historienne et enquêtrice avisée. Et puis Diderot… Le Philosophe est convoqué selon trois chefs : comme amateur (fort tiède,oumitigé) des voyages au loin et au près (Eszter Kovacs) :comme auteur ironique des Salons,entre art et nature, entre rire et émotion (Laurence Mall) :etcomme lecteur des romans de Richardson (Shelley Charles) :oùl’on apprend que sa lecture en «traduction fidèle »(de Grandison notamment), àladifférence des Recherches sur Diderot et sur l’Encyclopédie,45, 2010 4 PIERRE CHARTIER belles infidèles en réduction de l’abbé Prévost, ajoué dès la décennie de 1750 un rôle àréévaluer dans la conception et le contenu de l’Éloge de Richardson. Que d’hypothèses,que de pistes,que de précisions nouvelles,que d’éclaircissements àlalecture de ce numéro.Nous voilà prêts àde nouveaux et passionnants déchiffrements au siècle de Diderot, d’Holbach, d’Alembert et de l’Encyclopédie. Pierre Chartier Laurence MALL Entre ironie philosophique et ironie romantique : les Salons de Diderot Si Diderot est avec Voltaire l’un des deux philosophes français du xviiie siècle les plus fréquemment désignés comme ironistes,c’est presque toujours en tant qu’auteur de Jacques le fataliste et du Neveu de Rameau. Les Salons,eux,intéressent évidemment au premier chef comme premier grand texte de critique d’art et source primordiale de l’esthétique de Diderot. Rappelons qu’échelonnés de 1759 à1781, ils sont rédigés pour Grimm, l’éditeur de la Correspondance littéraire,etdestinés par là àun public aristocratique et princier très limité (l’ensemble ne sera publié qu’en 1857). Dans une série de descriptions souvent imaginatives, souvent drôles,Diderot rend compte des peintures exposées tous les deux ans au Salon Carré du Louvre par les peintres et sculpteurs de l’Académie royale.S’y ajoutent et mêlent de véritables fragments d’es- sais sur l’art, la fiction, la société, le langage,lapolitique,lamorale etc., dans un questionnement qui s’étend et évolue sur une vingtaine d’an- nées.Bien que relativement peu étudiée1,l’ironie critique yoccupe une place importante,comme il sera aisé de le démontrer.Elle se manifeste globalement dans un ensemble comique démystificateur dans lequel on inclura ici le burlesque,lasatire,l’humour,laraillerie et le sarcasme,le persiflage,lemot d’esprit2.Laprésence massive de cette ironie critique 1. La gamme de l’ironie moqueuse et démystificatrice est très étendue et les nuances permettant de passer de l’humour au comique,delamoquerie au sarcasme,delasatire au persiflage etc.sont àlafois fines et contestées… On ne tentera donc pas ici de définitions.

    VOLTAIRE AND ROUSSEAU: HUMANISTS AND HUMANITARIANS IN CONFLICT by Virgil W Topazio Whether judged as men, philosophers, or writers, it would be difficult to imagine two persons more different than Voltaire and Rousseau, yet they were both literary giants of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment who believed they had devoted most of their adult lives to the cause of political and moral freedom and justice. Voltaire was the beneficiary of a formal classical education that served as a solid base to his broad cultural background and wide reading. He un- abashedly enjoyed the flourishing eighteenth-century salon life with its pre- mium on wit, conversational skills, and intellect. And despite his capacities for strong emotions, his manner of coping with the overriding problen~of injustice was through the exercise of reason and intellect. Theodore Bester- man informs us in his recent biography of Voltaire: "The truth is that this nlost profound conviction (i.e., love of justice) was the fruit of Voltaire's reason, but it was expressed with all the deepest passions of his being.. Indeed, Voltaire was utterly a man of the mind."' Rousseau, on the other hand, possessed neither the classical education nor the broad systematic learning of Voltaire, though he was an unusually well- read autodidact in the eyes of Marguerite Reichenburg.' What is more important, Rousseau was by nature much more introverted than his extra- verted contenlporary, lacked Voltaire's conversational skills and sharp wit, and what is more, notwithstanding his protestations, was almost totally devoid of a sense of humor. He himself would probably have admitted that in his youth he had sold his soul to a Mephistophelian Paris.

    1 BIOGRAPHY OF SISMONDI HELMUT O. PAPPE I. Jean Charles Léonard Simonde was born on the 9th May 1773 into a Genevan family. In later life he changed his family to de Sismondi after an old Pisan aristocratic family from which he believed the Simondis to be descended. Charles’s parents were the pasteur Gèdèon François Simonde and his wife Henriette Ester Gabriele Girodz; a sister, Sara, called Serina by the family and her friends, saw the light of day two years later. The families of both parents were du haut the Simondes being on the borderline between nobility and upper bourgeoisie, the Girodz being members of the well-to-do upper bourgeoisie. Both the Simondes and the Girodz had come to Geneva as members of the second éimgration after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, that is, both families were Protestant fugitives from religious persecution in France. The Girodz had come to Geneva from Chàlons-sur-Saône in 1689. Henriette’s father, Pierre Girodz, became a successful and highly respected businessman engaged in various commercial enterprises connected with the watchmaking trade. He owned a substantial town house close to the cathedral in the Bourg-de-Four and an imposing country seat ‘Tourant’ at Chênes, both to be the residences of Sismondi after his return from exile in Italy. On the occasion of the marriage of his daughter on the 12th January 1770 Pierre Girodz was able to give her a dowry his town house worth 30,000 Livres as well as 10,000 Livres in cash and 2,000 Livres worth of jewellery.

Rousseau’s Notes sur De l’esprit Sophie Audidière Université de Bourgogne-Franche Comté Helvétius had a dubious reputation among eighteenth-century French Philosophes, being accused of exposing other writers who were more vulnerable to the threat of censorship, condemnation and ar- rest, by publishing works on materialism which drew attention to them indiscriminately. Despite considerable differences between Helvétius, Diderot and Rousseau from a sociological as well as from a philosophical point of view, Rousseau tended to lump the former two together for philoso- phical attention. With his book On Mind (De l’esprit), which earned him this dubious reputation, Helvétius had tried to stake out ground within the circle of eighteenth century philosophers.

LOS LÍMITES DE LA IDEA DE “TOLERANCIA” EN LOS ESCRITOS DE VOLTAIRE (1760–1770) } Adrián Ratto } Universidad de Buenos Aires, CONICET, Argentina] Resumen Entre 1760 y 1770, Voltaire desarrolló una serie de actividades en defensa de la idea de “tolerancia”. El objetivo de este artículo es evaluar, a la luz de las críticas que el filósofo dirige a Jean-Jacques Rousseau en el Sentiment des citoyens (1764), el alcance de dicho concepto en sus escritos durante esa década. Se demuestra que su posición con respecto al tema está atravesada por tensiones y que, en todo caso, de sus textos se desprende una idea de tolerancia limitada, que resulta difícil articular con la imagen que lo presenta como el “apóstol de la tolerancia”, una figura forjada en el mismo siglo XVIII, que se convirtió en un lugar común con el paso del tiempo. The aim of this article is to assess the extension of this concept in his writings over that decade, in light of the philosopher’s criticism of Jean-Jacques Rousseau in Sentiment des citoyens (1764). His position on the issue is shown to be fraught with tensions and his writings put forth, if anything, an idea of limited tolerance which is hard to equate with his standing as the “champion of tolerance”, an image cultivated during the 18th century, which has become commonplace over time.

The social framework of the French Enlightenment was the Republic of Letters, which emphasized the importance of habits and public opinion, and favored shame morality over guilt morality. Guilt morality is primarily concerned with individual conscience, and shame morality with social esteem.

Menudo Universidad Pablo de Olavide Preliminary version: October 27, 2015 Abstract: This paper examines A.R.J. Turgot’s explanation of the scope and method of economic science. We begin by highlighting two contradictory economic methodologies in Turgot’s writings according to the literature: one in his text on progress and another in his papers on concrete economic matters. An initial hypothesis in this paper holds that this ‘contradiction’ does not exist. To do so, we shall use his texts on scientific methodology, history of science and epistemology, mainly written during the decade of the fifties. The argument is that his taxonomy of sciences explains that the different methodologies observed by the literature, depending on the discipline, are the forms that the unit of science can take in each stage of the progress of the human spirit. A corollary to this hypothesis is that Turgot’s multi-disciplinary works describe a scene of the birth of economic science that is very removed from the political arena. Both debates on types of knowledge, the independence of disciplines, the specialized language and the association of authors are better explained from the sociology of science than from the history of political thought.
