a Utopia during the progressive era the helicon home colony 1906-1907 lawrence kaplan From early October, 1906, until the middle of March, 1907, when it was completely destroyed by fire, a Utopian community known as the Helicon Home Colony (and also called Helicon Hall) operated successfully on the fashionable east hill of Englewood, New Jersey. Prominent persons associated with the experiment in one capacity or another, like Upton Sinclair, John Dewey, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Jo Davidson, Sinclair Lewis, William James and others contributed to its reputation. Although largely ignored by historians of the period and barely remembered, except by a handful of local residents, Helicon Hall provided lively copy for the media. Stories about the colony regularly appeared in contemporary newspapers and magazines, shocking and titillating a readership just beginning to question the mores and values of the Victorian age. The Victorian frame of mind, which dominated the American public consciousness during the late nineteenth century, offered a whole range of universal "truths" for the conduct of life and thought. Starting from assumptions regarding an unpleasant and unchanging "human nature," the American Victorians held particularly dogmatic views about middle class behavior which attained the sanctity of absolute laws. Thought to be basic to every other institution was the family unit, whose stability supposedly determined the very health of society.1 And essential to family 0026-3079/84/2502-0059$0l .50/0 59 life remained the submissive role of women. As the weaker and more sensitive sex, females were trained from childhood to be full time wives and devoted mothers. -

A Notable Pennsylvanian: Ida Minerva Tarbell, 1857-1944 Josephine D. Randolph DuBois, Pennsylvania L'Agenc, Buclukw Stuhad Yearbook, 1931, p. 24 Ida M. Tarbell Gives One-hour Course Bucknell was fortunate in securing the services of Ida M. Tarbell, internationally known biographer, who gave a series of lectures ex- tending from March 17 to April 11. One credit hour was allowed each student who took the course in biography given by the noted writer. Recent articles by Miss Tarbell are "Father and Son", in the March AMERICAN MAGAZINE, and "Lincoln's First Love", in COLLIER'S for the week of February 8. Miss Tarbeli was a student in Paris at the Sorbonne and College de France from 1891 until 1894. From then until 1906 she was an asso- ciate editor of McCLURE'S MAGAZINE, becoming associate edi- tor of the AMERICAN MAGAZINE in 1906 and continuing in that capacity until 1915. Her dubs include the National Arts, Cosmo- politan, and Pen and Brush, of which she is president. 216 Pennsylvania History Few reformers are more widely recognized in American history than the Progressive muckraker, Ida M. Tarbell. Her expose, The History ofthe Standard Oil Company, originally serialized in McClure's Magazine beginning in No- vember 1902, and published in book form in 1904, is generally regarded as a classic example of investigative journalism. Tarbell gained prominence on the national level as a muckraker, but she was a Pennsylvanian first, and it was her Pennsylvania roots and experiences that sparked her interest in Progressive journalism. Although Tarbell studied in Paris for three years, and subsequently lived for many years in New York City and Connecticut, throughout her life she maintained close, if sporadic, ties to western Pennsylvania, especially with her family and with Allegheny College in Meadville where she completed her formal education.' Tarbell is the subject of several studies, including two biographies and two volumes devoted to her journalistic work. -

I argue that television appealed more to advertisers as a mass-market medium than general interest magazines. Magazines had to find a new way to appeal to advertisers, and they did so by becoming niche publications that could offer advertisers a specific type of audience, rather than just a huge amount of readers. -

authorial professionalism and the literary marketplace 1885-1900 nelson lichtenstein During the last two decades of the nineteenth century professional authorship in America achieved its modern dimensions. The institutional and economic framework within which the American man of letters had functioned was reestablished on a new economic basis involving large and complex markets, relative economic security and a qualitatively new relationship between publisher and editor. The concept of authorial professionalism took root as a new generation of American writers threw off the last vestiges of a pre-commercial, romantic view of their craft. During the 1890s these authors became conscious of their role as producers of a literary commodity, which in common with other fruits of a market economy might be bought and sold at the highest price. The basis for much of this transformation lay in certain technological and demographic changes which wedded the entire institution of American literature more closely to a capitalist ethos. When American literature first took on a recognizable coloration in the early nineteenth century it inherited from its English background much of that nation's attitude toward the role of the man of letters in the creation and dissemination of his work. Traditionally, and perhaps mythically, the creative writer was not a professional author or a producer of a literary commodity but a gentleman amateur who exhibited his talent to his social equals but did not depend upon it for a living; or he accepted the patronage of -

Sisson III, in 1970. I had asked Russ for advice on who I could contact on questions about some of London’s hard-to-find short fiction. "Jim Sisson is the guy," said Russ. Sisson, a Berkeley, California, researcher, was very helpful from the outset and his encyclopedic knowledge of London’s work quickly resolved my questions. In subsequent correspondence I learned that Sisson felt London’s short stories were not adequately treated in Jack London: A Bibliography, compiled by Hensley Woodbridge, John London and George H. Tweney (Georgetown, CA: Talisman Press, 1966). He complained that the stories were buried among magazine articles, chapters from The Cruise of the Snark, The Road, and other nonfiction works, all lost in a welter of foreign language translations including Latvian, Finnish, Turkoman, and Ukrainian. He also claimed that many of London’s stories were missing from Woodbridge, remaining buried in obscure and long-defunct magazines, uncollected in book form. -

Sign Location Charles (1858-1939) and Elaine Goodale (1863-1953) Eastman lived with their six children at Lodestone from 1911 to 1919, the period in which Charles published nine of his eleven books and Elaine published three of her seven books. Charles was born Santee Dakota and his books focus on his commitment to social justice for Native Americans. His biographies, Indian Boyhood (1902) and From the Deep Woods to Civilization: Chapters in the Autobiography of an Indian (1916), detail his flight from a Minnesota reservation to Canada after the Sioux uprising of 1862 and his studies at Dartmouth and Boston University, where he earned the M.D. that allowed him to provide medical care for victims of the Wounded Knee Massacre. There he met Goodale, a social worker and poet, who was Superintendent of Indian Education for the Two Dakotas. She collaborated with Charles on some of his works and independently produced her own poetry, novels, and memoirs. Born in Pennsylvania, Francis gained degrees at Harvard and then chose to make Western Massachusetts his home where he taught briefly at Amherst High School and Mount Holyoke College. -

ABSTRACT CULTURAL RECONSTRUCTION: NATION, RACE, AND THE INVENTION OF THE AMERICAN MAGAZINE, 1830-1915 Reynolds J. Scott -Childress, Doctor of Philosophy, 2003 Dissertation Directed by Professor James B. Gilbert, Department of History Cultural Reconstruction asks: How did the U.S. develop a national culture simultaneously unified and fractured by race? The little -examined history of American magazines offers a vital clue. The dissertation’s first part demonstrates how post – Jacksonian American culturists, deeply disturbed by the divisive partisanship of “male” politics, turned to the “female” culture of sentimentality with the hope of creating a coherent and inclusive nation. These culturists believed a nationally circulating magazine would be the medium of that culture. This belief derived from the wide success of the penny press revolution of the 1830s. Cutting against the traditional reading of the penny press, Cultural Reconstruction claims that newspapers were a major proponent of sentimentality but were barred from creating a national audience by their intense local appeal. Antebellum magazinists, from Edgar Allen Poe to James Russell Lowell, attempted to adapt the sentimental worldview of the penny press to a national audience, but were frustrated by a series of cultural rifts expressed chiefly in gendered terms. Part two of the dissertation examines how the post –Civil War magazine furthered the project of sentimentality and became the leading medium of national culture. Responding to the 1870s collapse of Political Reconstruction, editors such as Richard Watson Gilder at the Century employed a series of innovative aesthetic strategies —greater realism, local color, and regional dialect —believing they were creating a cultural panora ma of American life. -
