Windows: The SSH Client is a program package that allows you to safely communicate with the Sparky Unix server in order to access your account for E-mail and document storage. You can the Shell and Transfer client on the desktop of any SINC PC. Otherwise, you can download the SSH client (includes SSH shell and SSH File Transfer) to your PC (free of charge) from Softweb, Stony Brook’s software distribution page, https://softweb.cc.sunysb.edu. You can find SSH under E-mail & Telnet. You will need internet access to use in conjunction with the SSH client.

Special Note for Windows Vista users: You need to turn on the Telnet client by doing the following: 1. Go to Start > Control Panel 2. sure you are in “Control Panel Home” view (not Classic view). 3. Select Programs. 4. Select Turn Windows features on or off. 5. In the Windows Features box, select Telnet Client. 6. Click OK. Installation may take a few minutes, so please be patient.

Mac: Mac users can use Terminal to communicate with the Sparky Unix server and Fetch to transfer files.

UNIX Commands: Sparky Tricks

After the sparky% prompt, type in one of the commands below, hit Enter, and then follow the directions. myquota (gives you your quota and your remaining space) forward_mail (forwards messages from your Sparky E-mail to a personal E-mail of your choice) NetID or club username (changes your password) **when typing in a new password it will appear as though you are not typing anything. Note: clubs can change their password to their e-mail and web space account here as well. alpine (easy to use text-based user interface E-mail)

NOTE: Use the Delete key (not Backspace) to edit anything you type in this environment.
