Material Cataloged Separately The Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft Collection includes approximately 800 printed books, pamphlets, and broadsides (classed together under the call number PT1100.F7), 28 codex manuscripts (found under the call number BANC MSS 98/49 [no.]), a medallion, bas-relief, and an album of photomechanical prints (found under the call number BANC PIC 1998.001 [no.]), chiefly from the 17th century. Historical Note A particularly important aspect of the German Baroque period was the emergence of social structures which promoted literacy and the humanistics arts and sciences. Learned societies were established throughout Europe to bring scholars and writers together. One such society was the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft (Fruitbearing Society), known also as the Palmenorden (Order of the Palms) because its emblem was the then-exotic coconut palm tree. Founded in 1617, it played a major role in encouraging the use of written German, and in establishing linguistic and stylistic norms for the language. This collection represents the early years of its activity during the 17th and early 18th centuries.     The Fruitbearing Society and its memorable member emblems A reader from Germany here, with one large fun fact. One day, while tracking the name “Levin” from the Nazi era into the current German aristocratic families Marschall and Schulenburg, I happened upon the 17th century Fruitbearing Society, where several Levins were assembled. The full member list contained, it seemed, every aristocrat and his brother. Among the names were 7 Levin, 2 Achaz, 2 Achatz, 1 Achatius, 1 Job, 5 Jobst, 1 Moscherosch. So I looked closer. It was a so-called literary society, the German name “Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft” being more fitting, as they were “bringing” their fruit to others rather than simply bearing it, as we shall see. The society’s logo was a coconut palm tree (see above), and its slogan was to “utilize all”. Its stated goal was the refinement of the German language by purging foreign words, but they had very little to show for it in that regard. This setup was suspicious at first glance, because a society wishing to shield a language from foreign influences would not pick an exotic foreign tree as a logo. Except if the tree wasn’t foreign to them. Let us think: where would such trees grow? Jerusalem, maybe? According to official lore, the society was founded by Ludwig von Anhalt-Köthen (see above, note the cap), who had brought the concept from Italy on August 24th 1617 during the funeral festivities for his sister. With them were his son of the same name, his two entourage courtiers Albrecht Christof and Bernhard von Krosigk, his sister’s three sons Johann Ernst, Friedrich and Wilhelm IV von Sachsen-Weimar (4 more brothers would join later), plus the man who had been the private tutor and entourage to these brothers, Caspar von Teutleben.

A bearded cleric of Eastern-European appearance looks directly out at the viewer with a penetrating gaze. He is dressed in a tall soft cap and dark Trobes, augmented by thick sash and a crucifix on a chain. Although his dress is relatively sober, the rich velvet of his cap, glinting colours of the chains around his neck and cap suggest that the sitter is a figure of wealth and importance. Currently the sitter’s identity remains elusive. He appears in another very similar portrait by van Tweenhuysen in the Muzeum Narodowe in Wroclaw, Poland. In the Wroclaw portrait, the sitter turns in the opposite direction, and his right hand rests upon a book, but he is dressed in the identical restrained but luxurious costume.
