Signed: ____________________________ Date: ______________________ 2 Abstract Intellectuals and the State: The Resilience and Decline of Neo-Confucianism as State Ideology in Joseon Korea This dissertation attempts to revaluate the role of Neo-Confucianism in the historical development of the Joseon dynasty, in particular in relation to the eighteenth and the early nineteenth century. Japanese imperialist historians wanted to justify their colonization by emphasizing the backwardness of Joseon Neo-Confucianism, and Korean nationalist historians wanted to refute Japanese imperialist historiography by finding the seed of modernity in the late Joseon intellectual trends they labelled as Silhak, ‘Practical Learning’, a school of thought they argued developed in opposition to stagnant and conservative Neo-Confucianism. Despite their different agendas both groups based their research on the assumption that what Korea needed at the time was to “modernize.” Recent research on Joseon intellectual history has attempted to move beyond the teleological question of Korean modernization, but it has largely been limited to late eighteenth century trends and certain schools of thought. This study, however, situates these intellectual developments in the longer term historical development of the dynasty, and by focusing on how Neo-Confucian intellectuals reacted to a series of dynastic challenges and formulated further Neo-Confucian ideology to overcome them.     WORLD HISTORY: 1750–1914 KOREA From Hermit Kingdom to Colony By MiChael J. seth the World encroaches on the hermit Kingdom At the end of the eighteenth century, Korea was a land with more than a millen- nium of political unity, proud of its rigid adherence to Confucian cultural norms, and at peace with its neighbors. Under the reigns of two able kings, Yŏngjo (1724– 1776) and Chŏngjo (1776–1800), Korea prospered. In the nineteenth century, however, the state entered a period when weak kings were dominated by power- ful clans related to the monarch through royal marriages. Some historians see this as a sign that Korea was entering a decline after 1800. There was an uprising in the northwest in 1811–1812, a rice riot in Seoul in 1833, and some small scale peas- ant uprisings in the countryside, mainly aimed at local officials. Yet, its political and social institutions appeared quite stable. The social and economic domination of the country by the hereditary yangban elite (the high- est social class of Korea during the Chosŏn dynasty, 1392–1910), who competed for government office by taking the civil service exams, was secure. ABSTRACT This study provides a new theological approach for interpreting the Non- Church Movement (NCM) in Korea. Previous studies have been written from a historical perspective. Therefore, an examination of the spirituality and characteristics of the NCM from a theological standpoint is a new approach. The present study investigates the connection between the NCM and Confucianism. It attempts to highlight the influence of Confucian spirituality on the NCM, in particular the Confucian tradition of learning. It also examines the link between the NCM and Quakerism, in particular the influence of Quaker ecclesiology on the NCM. This too has not been examined in previous studies. The thesis argues that the theological roots of NCM ecclesiology lie in the relatively flat ecclesiology of the Quaker movement in the USA.

    STUDIA ORIENTALNE 2021, nr 2 (20) ISSN 2299-1999 https://doi.org/10.15804/so2021209 Haesung Lee1 Joseon Literati’s Righteous Principles (Yiriron) as a Moral Practice in the Political Realities – Its Meaning and Limitation in a Historical Context Introduction:Dohak – the Joseon Neo-Confucianism Neo-Confucianism flourished as a central ideology and absolute social order during the Joseon dynasty (朝鮮 1392–1910). “Neo-Confucianism” is a gen- eral term commonly applied to the revival of the various strands of Confucian philosophy during the Chinese Sòng dynasty (宋 960–1280 C.E.), re-exam- ined and reconstructed by Zhu Xi (朱熹, 1130–1200 AD.) It provided Koreans with philosophical speculation, moral and social norms, and a most strongly functional lifestyle. However, the terms of Joseon Neo-Confucianism con- note some specific characteristics, compared to classic Confucianism and the Chinese version of “Neo-Confucianism”2. The term of Dohak (道學 Chin. Dàoxué) – Dao (Way) Learning – already existed in classical Confucian context. Through an analysis of official documentation and multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork, this paper aims to introduce the current revitalization of ancient Confucian schools and rites, and the boom in children’s decorum camps and other Confucian-related educational programs on the Korean peninsula. Examining some of the schedules and curriculums, the textbooks studied, modernized rituals, and the agendas of the Ministry of Culture, the Confucian Association, and the New Religious Movement that lead the reforms, I deliberate upon possible reasons for this trend taking place at this particular time, contemplate the attempts to rebrand Confucianism as culture for better marketing, and point out some of the curious tensions and ironies this resurgence entails.
