Those of you who visit the McCoy next season will probably notice a change in the way we do things. Many of you have already received promotional materials touting "Our First Repertory Season!" Though many are familiar with the term "repertory theatre", not everyone understands exactly what that means, so perhaps a brief explanation is in order. It means that, instead of presenting a "run" of two or three weeks then closing that production, as we have done in the past, it is kept in the repertory and performed again. During Season 7, the McCoy will offer. five plays, the first three being performed in repertory, then closed, and the remaining two produced in "rep". It is in this manner that theatre was presented before the early years of the Twentieth Century and a manner in which we can find numerous advantages. This format enables audiences to see more than one play at the same theatre in the span of two evenings. It also enables a performer to play two different roles within the span of two evenings. The repertory format fits neatly within the McCoy's philosophies as an educational theatre. Since rehearsal continues even after a show has opened, there is a greater potential for growth in the performances of the artists involved. And since the focus of a production is concentrated on the play, the performance, and what is being experienced rather than on elaborate technical aspects, this format agrees nicely with the physical capabilities of the McCoy. It's a big step, but we're going to take it. We hope you'll join us for this season of growth at our ever-growing theatre.
