    Concert 1 September 29, 2018 Three Dance Episodes from On the Town—Leonard Bernstein Almost three decades after Leonard Bernstein’s death, the critics are still arguing over the meaning and impact of his legacy. What is clear, however, is that the world rarely enjoys the genius of someone who excels supremely in so many artistic endeavors. Pianist, conductor, television personality, teacher, mentor, social gadfly, and composer of both popular musical theatre and “serious works,” Bernstein wore all hats with avidity. And he enjoyed stunning success in most. He had a passion about everything that he essayed, whether conducting the Mahler that he loved so well, or in his many teaching roles, helping audiences “peel” apart the mysteries of music. He knew so much, and could do so much, that he genuinely thought that he could do it all. His leadership of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and other orchestras is legendary, but everyone knows there were some concerts that, frankly, got away from him in his self-indulgence exhuberance. He worked assiduously as a composer of “serious” music, but those works—from youthful successes to his late efforts--have enjoyed only mixed success. All that says is simply that he was human. Other than his epochal conducting, there is one field in which he garnered almost universal acclaim, and that is musical theatre. When all is said and done, he possessed a talent and a facility for the stage that was as deep as it was prolific. He understood the genre and its demands well. He plunged in early, writing for student productions at Harvard, and working with a cabaret group (that included Judy Holiday) while a student at the Curtis Institute.

Inspired by material by Guy Bolton and John McGowan. Originally produced on Broadway by Roger Horchow and Elizabeth Williams THE STORY ACT ONE It is backstage at the Zangler Theater in New York City in the 1930s during a performance of the "Zangler Follies." Impresario Bela Zangler is in love with Tess, his Dance Director but since Zangler is married, Tess rejects his advances. Also back stage is Bobby Child, heir to a wealthy banking family, who yearns to be in show- business. Bobby talks Zangler into letting him audition on the spot, but the audition is not a success. Outside the theatre, Bobby is accosted by Irene, his wealthy fiancée, whom he doesn't want to marry, then by his mother, who insists that he go to Deadrock, Nevada to foreclose on a property. Bobby escapes the argument by conjuring up the Follies Girls. When he returns to reality, he chooses Deadrock over Irene and hurries off to Grand Central station and for Deadrock. Deadrock is a has-been mining town where the only woman in town is Polly Baker, a feisty postmistress. Her father, Everett, owns the Gaiety Theater that has now gone to seed. Everett has received a letter from New York stating that a banker named Bobby Child has been sent to foreclose on the theatre as the mortgage payments have not been made. Polly vows that if she ever meets this "Bobby Child "she'll do "something ugly".

    I); Welcome to the 1958 Summer of Musicals . Welcome to Broadway in the country. Last season was the first time Guy S. Little, Jr., presented his SUMMER OF MUSI- CALS in Sullivan. That season was the culmination of many years of planning and dreaming. When very young he spent three seasons in summer stock at Keene, New Hampshire, and at Gateway Musical Playhouse at Ocean City, New Jersey. There he learned theatre business from the ground up . from making negligees for the leading lady to building scenery and stages. He was so enthralled with the theatre that he majored in drama at the University of Miami. While there he played numerous roles at the Ring Theatre and appeared in six operas with the Miami Opera Guild in support to Metropolitan opera stars. At Miami he met his wife, Jerili, who was a voice and drama major also. There he also had experience in directing, designing and publicity work. After receiving his B.A. he did graduate work at The American Theatre Wing and at Columbia University in New York City to further prepare himself to be a theatre producer. For the past ten years he familiarized himself with all Broadway productions of the past and present. He col- lected props and costumes for the day when he would operate a summer theatre. All during these years of preparation his dream was to bring the theatre to the Midwest, to the country. Why should New England be the only place where one could see the best of Broadway in summer stock? Would not the Mid- west, would not his home town support a SUMMER OF MU- SICALS? And so SUMMER OF MUSICALS opened July 3, 1957, with ERIGADOON featuring a New York cast.
