This new musical is brought to the stage in partnership with writer Rupert Holmes (Tony® Award winner for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Music and Lyrics for The Mysteries of Edwin Drood), Grammy® Award- winning composer Melissa Manchester, and Oscar-nominated lyricist Sharon Vaughn. TUTS Underground not only brings a wider musical theatre experience to Houston, but also serves as a launchpad – giving the TUTS Underground audience first view of new, emerging works. Based on The New York Times best-selling series (with a cult following) The Sweet Potato Queens ® by author Jill Connor Browne, the musical version is loosely based on Browne’s life – showcasing the juxtaposition between her life before creating the larger-than-life character of a Sweet Potato Queen, and after. An uplifting, empowering tale of perseverance and following dreams, The Sweet Potato Queens reminds audiences that everyone deserves to be special. Susan Koozin stars as Queen Jill with Kathryn Porterfield in the role of Jackson Jill. Her friends – all named Tammy – are Christina Stroup as Floozie Tammy, Julia Krohn as Flower Tammy and, new to the TUTS Underground stage, Kerissa Arrington as Too Much Tammy. The rest of the cast includes Dylan Godwin as George, Adam Gibbs as Tyler, Theresa Nelson as Mama and Kevin Cooney as Daddy.     Concert 1 September 29, 2018 Three Dance Episodes from On the Town—Leonard Bernstein Almost three decades after Leonard Bernstein’s death, the critics are still arguing over the meaning and impact of his legacy. What is clear, however, is that the world rarely enjoys the genius of someone who excels supremely in so many artistic endeavors. Pianist, conductor, television personality, teacher, mentor, social gadfly, and composer of both popular musical theatre and “serious works,” Bernstein wore all hats with avidity. And he enjoyed stunning success in most. He had a passion about everything that he essayed, whether conducting the Mahler that he loved so well, or in his many teaching roles, helping audiences “peel” apart the mysteries of music. He knew so much, and could do so much, that he genuinely thought that he could do it all. His leadership of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and other orchestras is legendary, but everyone knows there were some concerts that, frankly, got away from him in his self-indulgence exhuberance. He worked assiduously as a composer of “serious” music, but those works—from youthful successes to his late efforts--have enjoyed only mixed success. All that says is simply that he was human. Other than his epochal conducting, there is one field in which he garnered almost universal acclaim, and that is musical theatre. When all is said and done, he possessed a talent and a facility for the stage that was as deep as it was prolific. He understood the genre and its demands well. He plunged in early, writing for student productions at Harvard, and working with a cabaret group (that included Judy Holiday) while a student at the Curtis Institute.

    “Ya Got Trouble” from The Music Man Context (from Wikipedia): In July 1912, a traveling salesman, "Professor" Harold Hill (Robert Preston), arrives in the fictional location of River City, Iowa, intrigued by the challenge of swindling the famously stubborn natives of Iowa ("Iowa Stubborn"). Masquerading as a traveling band instructor, Professor Hill plans to con the citizens of River City into paying him to create a boys' marching band, including instruments, uniforms, and music instruction. Once he has collected the money and the instruments and uniforms have arrived, he will hop the next train out of town, leaving them without their money or a band.     11. Name: Rupert Holmes Years: February 24, 1947 – Present Residence: Nanuet, New York Brief Biography: Rupert Holmes was born under the name David Goldstein in Northwich, Cheshire, England. His father was an American army officer and his mother was an English woman. His family was musically inclined, evidenced by his father being a band leader and his brother growing up to be an opera singer. His family relocated after a few years to Nanuet, New York, where Holmes grew up and attended nearby Nyack High School. After graduating, Holmes went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music where he majored in clarinet. He married in 1969 to Elizabeth Dreifuss, whom he had three children with. In his twenties, Holmes was a session musician (composing, playing, and recording) and worked with groups such as The Cuff Links, The Buoys, and The Archies. It was at this time that he made his first appearances on the billboard charts. He went on to be a recording artist in his own right by 1974. His work was noticed by Barbra Streisand and was utilized in the movie A Star Is Born. "Escape" debuted on Holmes' fifth album, Partners in Crime, and reached the Hot 100 No. 1 Hits of 1979 becoming the last number one song of the 1970s. A number of his songs such as “Town Square” and “Terminal,” directly or indirectly reference where he grew up around Nyack. He wrote a single for The Jets called "You Got It All" which was later rerecorded by Britney Spears in 2000. Holmes also went on to become a playwright with plays such as The Mystery of Edwin Drood, the Tony Award-nominated ("Best Play 2003") Say Goodnight, Gracie, and musical theatre version of the film The First Wives Club.
