The first Shakespearean play I ever saw was "The Taming Of The Shrew" and since then I have been a fan as an actor, director and audience member. One of the enduring things about Shakespeare is its timelessness and versatility even after several hundred years. His plays have been set in almost every historical period and even in some imaginary ones. "Kiss Me, Kate" is a great example of that versatility. I've wanted to be involved in a production of this show ever since I learned about it. What is brilliant about "Kiss Me, Kate" is that it takes this wonderful play by Shakespeare; adds the great music of Cole Porter and blends what takes place offstage, and on stage, so you're not quite sure where one play ends and the other begins. And does all this without losing the basic story of "The Taming Of The Shrew". Someone said to me that "Kiss Me, Kate" is the first "Shakespeare In Love". I agree. The film "Shakespeare In Love" introduced Shakespeare to millions of people who had always avoided his works. They discovered that he was not as "stuffy" or as difficult to understand as they thought. I hope that after you see "Kiss Me, Kate", you will have a better understanding of how much fun Shakespeare can be and might even go see one of his plays sometime. I am very proud of this cast, orchestra, crew and staff who have worked so hard on this production. When I began rehearsals for this show, I challenged everyone to make "Kiss Me, Kate" something special; to work harder, to be more creative and to do things differently than they've done in the past, even though it may seem uncomfortable. They have all worked very hard to meet those chal- lenges. How successful we have been is up to you, the audience, to decide. Hope- fully, you will be pleasantly surprised. So sit back, relax and enjoy the perfor- mances of a very talented cast, orchestra and crew in this wonderful production of "Kiss Me, Kate". -Steven Lambert, Director "The thing that makes Shakespeare breathtaking and defines poetry, is the simul- taneous compression of language and the expansion of meaning.
