It is approximately 0.7 mile due east of the intersection of Johnson Avenue and the New Jersey Turnpike Extension. UTM: 18.580900.4506780 Quad: Jersey City Date of Construction: 1891; subsequently modified at an unknown date, possibly 1909. Present Owner: State of New Jersey, Division of Parks and Forestry, Department of Environmental Protection, Trenton, Mew Jersey 08625 Present Use: The structure was unused and vacant at the time its demolition commenced in August 1979. It was destroyed by fire before demolition was completed. Significance: Pier G was the last multistoried covered freight pier of heavy timber construction surviving on the Hudson River waterfront in Hudson County. It was among the last remains of the Lehigh Valley Railroad's New York Harbor terminus complex. EXISTING CONDITIONS As part of the background work in developing this Circulation Element, a detailed assessment of the history of circulation in Jersey City and an inventory of the baseline conditions of the City’s transportation system were prepared. 2.1 History of Circulation in Jersey City Photo Source: Jersey City Division of City Planning Strategically located on the Hudson River and with easy access to Upper New York Bay, the City of Jersey City was an important center for shipping and maritime activity during the peak of the industrial revolution of the early nineteenth century. This status was reinforced when the Morris Canal was completed at Jersey City in 1836, giving the City shared direct linkage with the Delaware River at Phillipsburg and with important inland points, such as Newark and Paterson. Jersey City continued to serve as a transit point between Upper New York Bay and inland points to the west, but as the industrial revolution progressed, new technologies enabled the development of newer, more efficient forms of transport than canals. Consequently, railroads followed and terminals were constructed along the Hudson River waterfront and other points in the City. One example is the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, which originally opened in 1864 and is located in what is now Liberty State Park. With terminals located on the Hudson River, it was not long before ideas about a rail linkage to New York City began to evolve. This led to the construction of what is now known as the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) train, which commenced operations in 1907 after many arduous years of tunneling under the Hudson River.

THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF JERSEY CITY DOES ORDAIN: WHEREAS, the City of Jersey City (the "City") does possess rights-of-way through all public streets, thoroughfares and sidewalks located within the City; and WHEREAS, the City is authorized pursuant to N.J.S.A. 40:67-1 et seq. and N.J.S.A. 40-A:12-5 to estabiish, change the grade of or vacate any public street, highway, lane or alley, or any part thereof at the discretion of the City; and WHEREAS, St. George and St. Shenuda Church Pafriarchate of Alexandria ("Petitioner") has filed a Petition with the Municipal Council of the City of Jersey City requesting the vacation of portions of Freeman Avenue as Field Avenue, which parcels are more particularly described by the metes and bounds descriptions and depicted on the attached Right of Way Exhibit, attached as Exhibit "A" to the Ordinance; and WHEREAS Freeman Avenue and Field Avenue are located within the City of Jersey City, County of Hudson, State of New Jersey; and WHEREAS, there is no municipal or public need for the portions of Freeman Avenue and Field Avenue and the Petitioner now desires those portions of both rights of way to be vacated; and WHEREAS, the area

    Chapter 1: Background and Planning Context 1.0 INTRODUCTION The City of Jersey City is planning for substantial growth along its western waterfront (Hudson County, New Jersey) with a mix of new residential and commercial uses on former industrial sites. Major projects will include the new development of Bayfront, the new West Campus of New Jersey City University, and proposed improvements to Route 440. The success of this new development depends on new or enhanced transit service that creates a convenient connection between the western waterfront of Jersey City and existing transit services, including the Hudson‐Bergen Light Rail (HBLR). The HBLR Route 440 Extension Alternatives Analysis (the “Proposed Project”) is being undertaken by New Jersey Transit Corporation (“NJ TRANSIT”) and is considering alternatives to improve mobility for existing and future residents of the western waterfront by providing convenient connections between the HBLR West Side Avenue Station and development on both sides of Route 440. NJ TRANSIT plans to apply for federal funds administered by the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA’s) Major Capital Investments Program for a Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) for this transit improvement. Consistent with FTA requirements for this program, NJ TRANSIT is conducting an alternatives analysis to identify goals and objectives for the transit enhancement, evaluate potential alternatives, and select an LPA. 1.1 OVERVIEW OF HBLR SYSTEM HBLR is a 17.5‐mile light rail system that operates in Hudson County and serves the cities and townships of Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne, Weehawken, Union City, and North Bergen. NJ TRANSIT owns the system and contracts its operation to 21st Century Rail Corporation.
