PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I am pleased to report on the continued growth and success of Volleyball ACT in the 12 month period from January to December 2010.

A 22% increase in membership in the period demonstrates that the ongoing work of our clubs in attracting and retaining new members, our junior recruitment programs and general advertising and marketing are effectively attracting new members to the sport.

This period saw a change from financial year to calendar year financial reporting and already it has given the Board and management a greater level of detail allowing better and more accurate information for ongoing financial planning. The surplus of $15,727 for the 2010 period is a great result which shows strong performance and a continuing financial stability.

This was also the first year of the 2010‐2013 Strategic Plan which focuses on increasing participation, strengthening clubs and further advancing our elite development pathways.

After its first full year of operation the Heat Volleyball Academy is already showing positive results with ACT representative teams competing strongly on the national stage and many athletes going on to higher national team representation. Joel Tyrrell and Jacques Borgeaud debuted for the Australian National Men’s team while 3 other academy athletes were selected in Australian Junior teams for international competitions.

The Canberra Heat Men had a hugely successful 2010, winning Gold at the Good Neighbour Tournament and Bronze in the Australian Volleyball League. They were rewarded for their performances by being chosen as ACT Sportstar Team of the Month in November.

The 45th annual Good Neighbour Tournament attracted an impressive 126 teams, 14 more than the year before. This event is the largest and most enduring of any club tournament in Australia and it continues to attract entries from most states and territories as well as from overseas.

The State League competition experienced a growth in team entries and welcomed a new club, the ACT Dragons. The sustainability of our clubs is imperative in providing appropriate opportunities for the participation and development of players, coaches and officials. Our clubs continue to be supported by a key group of volunteers that play a critical role in keeping our sport vibrant.

VACT continues to enjoy the support of Sport and Recreation ACT who provide financial support to underpin our core operations.

After over 6 years on the VACT Board Gary Antognelli has decided not to contest re‐election in 2011. I would like to formally recognise the significant contribution Gary has made to VACT and thank him for his efforts.

I would also like to thank the Board and VACT staff, Alex Vallentine and Steve Currie, for their commitment during the year to improving the Volleyball experience on offer to the ACT community and to enhancing the profile and reach of Volleyball in the ACT.

Phil Borgeaud President

TREASURER’S REPORT

In the first full calendar year financial reporting period the organisation performed extremely well, reporting substantial increases to both the overall revenue and the operational surplus.

Our financial report for the period was again prepared by RSM Bird Cameron Chartered Accountants and after being successfully audited, the report shows a surplus of $15,727 which is a 33% increase on the previous 12 month period.

The change from financial year to calendar year financial reporting has provided a clearer financial picture and has allowed for much easier planning and reporting over a 12 month period.

Our triennial operational funding from Sport & Recreation Services ACT continues to be an important source of income, along with our regular competition income and revenue raised from the Good Neighbour tournament.

The ongoing strong financial performance and stability of Volleyball ACT owes a great deal to our General Manager Alex Vallentine, the Finance Committee and the Board.

I look forward to a continuing strong financial position for the organisation in future years.

Gary Antognelli Vice President – Finance

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

The 2010 period was a successful time for VACT as we have continued to grow and develop all of our programs and services to members, while at the same time building a solid financial platform to continue expanding in the future.

I would like to thank the board, staff, volunteers and clubs of the Volleyball ACT community for their continued hard work and dedication to the sport of volleyball.

Clubs are a vital part of the VACT community and in 2010 we were pleased to welcome the ACT Dragons as our newest club. Creating a robust and effective club structure is a key strategic goal for VACT moving forward.

Our core business, local competitions, continue to be successful with both the State and Open Leagues growing during the period.

In November 2010 we ran the 45th Good Neighbour Volleyball tournament and attracted a near record 126 teams. Congratulations to the Canberra Heat Men, who took out the Men’s Honours Gold Medal for the first time.

The Canberra Heat Volleyball Academy had a great first year of operation and we are proud of all our athletes who have been selected in Australian teams as a result of the academy development pathway we have implemented.

Overall volleyball in the ACT is developing and growing well and after strong financial performance and a 22% membership increase in 2010, we look forward to continuing the progress of the organisation in 2011 and beyond.

Alex Vallentine General Manager

LEAGUES

LEAGUES ADMINISTRATOR REPORT

Firstly I would like to thank all court supervisors and referees, without whom our competitions could not operate.

2010 has been another strong year for Volleyball ACT’s competitions. State League has remained healthy and clubs are continuing to improve their administration as well as provide increased development opportunities for their members. These increased development opportunities saw numerous clubs enter teams in to the Open League resulting in significant growth in this area.

State League State League saw new club, Dragons enter the competition along with a team from the AIS in the Premier Men’s division, maintaining the healthy number of teams from 2009. Once again teams first competed in the 6 week VACT Cup and clubs are now utilising this pre‐season competition to gauge and prepare their teams for the main season. A full day of finals was again held at the AIS with a number of matches going the full 5 sets. The two premier games in particular were exceptionally close with ANU upsetting the previously undefeated Panthers Red to take the Women’s title, while Panthers held off a dogged Dragons outfit to claim the Men’s title. The Club Championship for 2010 went to Dragons on the back of some strong performances, particularly in the Reserve Divisions. We look forward to seeing the rivalries grow as clubs compete for this title in the future.

Open League Following on from 2009, Women’s Division One continued to grow, to the point where a Division Two competition for Women was added for the Spring Season. Men’s Divisions One and Three also grew while Men’s Division Two remained small yet sustainable. This growth can be largely attributed to an increased club presence with a number of new club teams entering the various divisions.

Recreational League With clubs moving their attentions towards Open League, the Recreational Leagues experienced a slight decline in team numbers for 2010. The competition held at Tuggeranong experienced the greatest decline and its long term future is an area of concern, however the League as a whole remains in a strong position.

Beach League/Summer Indoor The Beach League experienced a small decrease in team entries for the 2009/10 season with competitions being held across two nights. The League continues to have issues with the standard and lack of maintenance of the Civic Pool courts and this could be contributing to the loss of teams from previous years. The Summer Indoor competition remains strong and continues to be a popular choice over the summer months with solid team numbers for the 2009/10 season.

AUSpike Junior Volleyball Competition The AUSpike Junior Volleyball Competition continued with the format introduced in 2009 consisting of a series of single day tournaments during school terms 2 and 3. The competition added 2 age divisions for U15 and U17 players. This proved hugely successful for the girl’s competition with 2 divisions running for all 5 rounds, however a viable boy’s competition proved difficult with a number of rounds being cancelled due to lack of players/teams.

Overall, 2010 has been a successful period for VACT’s competitions and hopefully will provide a platform for continuing growth and success in 2011.

EVENTS OVERVIEW

Good Neighbour Volleyball Tournament

27th‐28th November 2010 (45th year)

The 45th Good Neighbour Volleyball Tournament was held on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th November 2010 across 4 venues (AIS, National Hockey Centre, National Netball Centre and ANU).

There were a near record 126 teams competing across 13 divisions. The Men’s divisions in particular proved extremely popular, with Divisions 1‐4 full and 9 teams entered into Men’s Honours.

Good Neighbour continues to be Australia’s largest and most enduring club volleyball tournament and is a highlight on the Australian volleyball calendar.

Continuing to raise the standard and quality of the tournament continues to be a key focus and depending on venue availability we hope to continue building team numbers in future years, particularly from overseas.

DEVELOPMENT

DEVELOPMENT MANAGER’S REPORT

Volleyball ACT continues to build its development pathway with a number of new initiatives being introduced providing further opportunities for members of all ages and skill levels. The establishment of another Spikezone program for north side children, further improvements to the AUSpike competition and an updated Schools Cup competition in addition to the regular junior representative programs, schools clinics and coaching/refereeing courses have made for a busy development schedule.

Australian Representative Players We were proud to have five Canberra Heat Academy athletes selected for National Team duties during 2010. Alex Turner, Jordan Power, Jacques Borgeaud travelled to Thailand as part of the Australian Junior Boys Development Tour, Dan Tyrrell also attended as part of the coaching staff. Alex Sneddon travelled to Thailand for the Australian Junior Girls Development Tour. Jacques and fellow Heat Academy athlete, Joel Tyrrell, were selected as part of the senior men’s side for the home series against Canada and Joel also travelled with the team to the World Championships. We look forward to seeing these athletes and more in representative sides in the future.

2010 Australian Junior Volleyball Championships The ACT sent four teams to the 2010 Australian Junior Volleyball Championships held in Perth. After an outstanding performance in 2009, the program continued to produce some strong performances in 2010.

Trials for the teams started in early February and continued through March with the culmination of the trial period being a full day of training at Lyneham Hockey Centre. All teams had two weekly trainings providing ample opportunity to develop and improve. After being introduced in 2009, the specialist sessions for setters and passers continued, allowing for added touches in these key areas.

Championship report: The ACT was looking to build on the strong results of 2009 at the 2010 edition of the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships, held in Perth from the 4th to the 10th of July.

After achieving great results in tournaments leading into the championships, the U/19 men, made up primarily of 4th placed U/17 men from 2009, were looking to go one better and get amongst the medals in 2010. A tough 5 set first game loss at the hands of NSW set the scene for the week ahead. After performing fantastically in the sets they won, the team couldn't maintain a consistent level of play and mental focus, particularly at the latter stages of sets, and thus continually dropped sets by very close margins after being in winning positions. The team finished with 2 wins and in 6th place. The lessons learnt from these championships should hold them in good stead for the next few years as many of the athletes move into the senior Canberra Heat squad and the same team participates in a home event in 2012 in U/21's.

The U/19 women got off to a great start, winning in 5 sets against the home WA team. From there the team faced some tough losses against much more experienced teams, and finished the week with the single win and in 5th place.

A young U/17 Men team, made up mostly of U/16 athletes, improved with each game during the week, despite struggling with injuries. Despite the setbacks early in the week in their pool, the team turned out some brave performances in the Challenger Pool games, winning 2 from 3, and finishing in 8th spot.

Finally, the best performing ACT team of the week was the U/17 Women, emulating the U/17 Men of 2009, to make the bronze medal play‐off on the Saturday. The girls went through their pool undefeated before going down to SA, New Zealand, WA and Queensland in the Championship Pool. However, their initial pool results were enough to see them into the bronze medal game against SA. The girls did their best against a very strong SA outfit that probably should have been playing for gold if it wasn't for some unfortunate injuries early in the week, but ultimately lost out with SA taking the bronze in a 3‐1 victory.

For the first time in a number of years an ACT player featured in an All‐Star Seven team, with Alex Sneddon, captain of the U/17 women, rewarded for her efforts during the week.

Congratulations to all teams, coaches and managers and we look forward to a big 2011.

2010 Australian Under 15 Volleyball Championships Four ACT teams competed in the Australian Under 15 Championships held in Albury from April 6th ‐ 9th.

Girl’s team, ACT Gold had a particularly good tournament finishing in 5th place and were perhaps unlucky to miss out on a semi final berth. The result continues ACT’s strong performances over recent years and bodes well for the future. Overall it was another positive tournament with all ACT teams recording wins. Congratulations to all players and coaches on another enjoyable week.

Special thanks to Kim Magro and our team of ‘cabin mums’ who kept the players well fed and in clean uniforms throughout the tournament.

2010 Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championship Sixteen athletes travelled to Adelaide to take part in the SA Open and the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships.

In trying conditions, the ACT players did their best against some of the nation's top beach volleyball players in the SA Open, a tournament part of the National Beach Series. With the wind blowing early on, and only getting stronger in the afternoon, all the ACT teams were knocked out in the first day via the ruthless double elimination format.

The National Junior Beach Championships also started in blustery conditions before finishing with two perfect days, allowing the ACT teams to play in more familiar conditions. Seven ACT teams took part, with most improving on their initial seeding. Congratulations to the U17 Women’s pairing of Jennifer May and Georgia Niedermeier on achieving a top 8 finish, a credible 5th out of 23, a ranking that may well have been even higher with a kinder draw.

U/17 Women 5th Jen May / Georgia Niedermeier 16th Kate Wagner / Charlotte Watkins

U/19 Men 17th Matt Tyrrell / Jake Larkin 20th Mitch McGee / Steve Savic 21st Shayne Crombie / Simon Hone

U/19 Women 10th Courtney Power / Cass Holt

U/23 Men 10th Nils Langford / Cameron Beck

Well done to all the athletes and thankyou to the coaching staff of Chris Currie, Steve Currie, Dan Tyrrell and Andre Borgeaud. Good luck next summer!

Spikezone In Term 4 2010 a new Spikezone centre was established at Amaroo School in conjunction with ACT Dragons Volleyball Club. This provides opportunities for children in the growing Gungahlin region to participate in this national junior volleyball program and is a vital link for continuing junior development. Panthers and Belconnen Spikezone programs continued throughout 2010 and each retained a core group of participants each week. We hope to continue to develop and build each centre and add competitions against the other programs in 2011. Special thanks to each club for their continued support of the Spikezone program.

Continued success of this competition lies with the clubs and VACT will be working on attracting junior teams from all clubs to participate in AUSpike in 2011 and beyond.

ACT Volleyball Schools Cup The ACT Volleyball Schools Cup merged with the School Sport ACT competition in 2010 and this resulted in a record 59 teams from 21 schools across the ACT taking part. Congratulations to the following teams who took out their respective divisions: Under 15 (Yr 7/8) Boys‐ Lyneham High School Under 15 (Yr 7/8) Girls‐ Lyneham High School Under 17 (Yr 9/10) Boys‐ Lyneham High School Under 17 (Yr 9/10) Girls‐ Stromlo High School Open Boys‐ Lake Ginninderra 2 Open Girls‐ Lake Ginninderra 1

Active After School Communities Program VACT continues to contribute to the Active After School Communities (AASC) program which is run in conjunction with the Australian Sports Commission. The program continues to provide good experience for younger coaches and Belconnen and Panthers Volleyball Clubs have now taken a more active role in the program.

In term 4, VACT, Belconnen Volleyball Club, Volleyball Australia and the Australian Sports Commission established a pilot program to create a successful link between AASC and Belconnen’s Spikezone program. Due to staffing issues with the relevant After School Centres, the program could not go ahead as planned however all parties remain keen to complete such a program in the future.

School Clinics VACT ran a number of clinics at various schools during the 2010. The challenge for VACT has been to provide clinics that are both financially viable for the school and the organisation, with a number of schools having policies that prevent them from paying for sporting clinics. Thanks to all coaches who assisted with these clinics over the period.

Canberra Heat Men

Canberra Heat Men started the year without having secured an AVL finals berth since 2003 and hanging onto the Silver medal from Good Neighbour in 2008. Despite this starting point, we were to see the rise of a team that were out to cause an upset in 2010.

Major Highlights Good Neighbour Gold Medal Australian Volleyball League Bronze Medal

These solid results were achieved by a relatively young, yet extremely dedicated and passionate squad. The squad included the likes of the 2009 AVL MVP Andre Borgeaud, national junior and youth representative players Alex Turner and Jordan Power, and returning from the pasture, one of the Canberra Heat veterans, Brad Osborn.

The Heat pre‐season preparations included unprecedented commitment to training, games and team building. Heat played a number of Heat Gold v Heat Blue exhibition matches, as well as matches against the AIS and UTSSU. Another vital component of the team’s development was competing in the NSW State Volleyball League held at Homebush Olympic Park on Sundays.

After a solid preparation, the first objective of the AVL season was to make the final four. The team was playing very well during the rounds, only just going down in five sets to Uni Blues (VIC), the eventual gold medalists, in the first round. Heat were acutally the only team to take a set off them in that round. The second round started with an equally close match against the Blues; however, it was a must win match against WA that secured a top four placing.

The team was developing with every game, but they were yet to play their best volleyball. With an extended break in the AVL round, the Heat had Good Neighbour Honours to maintain their form. The first game of the tournament saw Heat just lose to AIS with two players being taken out of the game injured. The team then built over the weekend to get the chance to play AIS once again in the grand final. With some great team play, Heat secured the Gold! This was the first time the AIS didn’t win Good Neighbour in a year that they played.

With the confidence that came with a win against AIS, Heat had to focus on beating UTSSU in the AVL quarter final in Melbourne. Heat had not won a game against UTSSU in the round matches; however, managed the win in 5 against the odds. A thrilling match with the fifth set going to the wire. Heat were 9:14 down and served out the match to win 16:14. A great game to watch, and even better game to play in.

With an exhausting five setter under their belt, Heat had to back it up with a game against the AIS (who lost against Uni Blues earlier in that day). This winner of this game secured the chance to play against Uni Blues for the gold medal. The loser had to play UTSSU for the Bronze. Unfortunately, Heat were unable to regroup against some very good coaching from the AIS.

With a night to regroup, the Heat came out firing against the UTSSU in the bronze medal match. Not only did they take out the bronze, they did it in 3 sets. A great finish to the year and a great foundation to build on in 2011.

Canberra Heat Women

On the back of a solid WAVL season the previous year, the Heat Women were primed for success in 2010. The return of Olympian Sil Ruddle and the addition of two Fijian National Team players to the core of the 2009 team shaped a formidable side that was confident of a finals berth. However, for many in the team that confidence was severely eroded when, just prior to the competition, the international recruits struck visa problems and were unable to play in the league. Although Heat did not make the finals, the team enjoyed a very competitive season taking three of the five opposing teams to five sets, including eventual runner up Uni Blues (VIC). Heat finished the season in 5th place (of 6 teams) with a win against QLD Pirates ‐ a very creditable performance.

Despite a good preparation, Heat’s last minute team reshuffle meant that confidence was low heading into the first round. It was absolutely fantastic for the team to experience and respond to, the enthusiastic support of a home crowd for the opening Friday night match against the strongly fancied UTSSU (NSW). It was a difficult first up match, with UTSSU playing a very aggressive and much faster style of game than the team was accustomed to. Although going down in straight sets, Heat fought hard and rallied, with the support of the crowd, to stay with UTSSU and this fighting spirit set the tone for the season. After the high energy and emotion of that match the team found it difficult to back up the next morning and SA got the better of Heat by virtue of consistently strong serving. Showing great character, Heat recovered to play some inspired volleyball against the big hitting, highly credentialed Uni Blues (VIC), a team consisting of numerous Australian team players. In a match of fluctuating fortune, Heat captured a nail biting 4th set 26‐24 to take the match to a decider and scores were level at 8 all before the wheels fell off – Heat going down 8‐15 on the back of some strong serving from the Victorians. Although disappointed to have let the match slip, the team was buoyed by the performance, especially considering that last season Heat had to wait until their penultimate match before winning a set.

In the final match of the round, Heat fought out a tough five set battle with the QLD Pirates. Heat had the momentum taking the third set 27‐25 to hold a 2‐1 set lead, only to have the Pirates fight back and take the fourth. The crowd was a gain an influencing factor and included all the ACT junior teams. This time Heat held firm in the 5th and came away with the win – the first in two seasons. It was important that the appreciative crowd saw, and shared in, the team win and court side celebrations and this gave the team a real lift.

The Sydney round was encouraging as the younger players really started to assert themselves in the league. Jen May played a blinder in the opening match but it wasn’t enough to upset the very consistent and relentless WA Pearls. Heat then made amends for a below par performance against SA in the first round by playing good solid volleyball to take a 2‐1 set advantage and were poised for a second win, only to have SA rally and take the fourth and finish strongly in the fifth. The loss took a lot out of the team, both physically and emotionally.

With only 1hr to rest before facing UTSSU, Heat struggled to reproduce the form of the previous match and UTSSU were comfortable winners. Perth was a difficult round for the team. It was held immediately prior to the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships and some players struggled with the dual focus. The competition was stronger also, with several overseas based players returning for this round. Heat had high expectations of another win against the QLD Pirates but despite playing a hard fought match and taking a thrilling second set 31‐29, National Team player Rachel Rourke (based in USA) proved to be the difference, winning 26 pts on her own!

On the final day Heat faced the two top teams, Uni Blues and WA Pearls. Both teams had scouted Heat well and were able to put a lot of pressure on the passers which greatly affected overall team confidence. The team found it difficult to mount a strong attack and were beaten comfortably. This was a reflection of the top teams raising their level and Heat not being able to match their power, consistency or intensity.

Despite a challenging final round, the team was reassured of its progress by numerous comments from players and coaches remarking on how much Heat had improved over the past year. These comments were supported by the fact that Heat had three players (Sil Ruddle, Jen May and Fiona Kirkpatrick) feature in the Top Ten statistics and that Sil Ruddle was a joint winner of the league’s Most Valuable Player award.

Sil officially retired from all levels of volleyball after Heat’s final game of the season against the WA Pearls. AVF CEO Joan Perry presented Sil with flowers and paid tribute to her long and distinguished career, her willingness to continue to support WAVL and to provide leadership to a young ACT team, and her position as a role model for many up and coming Australian players of the future. Heat sincerely thanks Sil for her commitment to the team over the past few years in particular and acknowledges the significant impact that she has had on the development of the team and the competitiveness displayed.

Sil Ruddle was the joint winner of the league’s Most Valuable Player award (together with Tara West from WA).

Three Heat players finished in the Top Ten Statistics; • Sil Ruddle; 5th Best Scorer, 4th Best Blocker, 8th Best Defender • Jen May; 9th Best Scorer • Fiona Kirkpatrick; 5th Best Server, 7th Best Blocker

The support is greatly appreciated and is vital for Canberra Heat to continue to be a developing competitive force in the WAVL. Thanks also go to the VACT staff, the Belconnen, Dragons, Panthers and ACT U/19 men’s teams who played practice matches against the Heat women and to the wider volleyball community for their fantastic support of the team in the home round – it all makes a huge difference!

REFEREE FORUM REPORT

Two Level 1 courses were held during the year (one at Albury Wodonga in February 2010 and one in May 2010). There were twelve participants and fifteen participants respectively. These participants are now part of the National Officiating Accreditation Scheme and can expect regular updates as well as support from the AVRC and NOAS. It is now the responsibility of the senior referees and VACT to keep these people interested and motivated so they can become an integral part of VACT competitions and the overall national structure.

The Good Neighbour Tournament was also an integral part of referee development and should continue to be so. The tournament in 2010 was again of an excellent standard and a great opportunity for referees to gain experience officiating in high level matches. Interstate and local referees were able to service all Honours men’s and women’s matches. This was greatly appreciated by all teams and certainly added to an already excellent tournament. Attracting intestate referees should be seen as a priority in the coming years.

Bruce Driver represented VACT as a referee at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships held in Perth during the middle of July. Michael Fitzpatrick was also appointed as Technical Delegate for this tournament.

Phong Nguyen was appointed to the 2nd Asian Men’s Cup in Iran in August.

Michael Fitzpatrick attended and completed an International Referees Candidates Course held in Taipei, in March 2010.

Dean Turner, once again displayed the high regard that the volleyball Asian region has in him when he continued to represent Australia on the Referee’s Commission of the Asian Volleyball Confederation. We certainly cannot be said to be uninformed as Dean, by being on the commission, brings back the latest interpretations and directions from the FIVB, the world’s governing body.

I would like to thank all the referees in the VACT competitions who gave their time throughout the year. Many of these referees give their time freely outside their paid competition hours to further the interests of VACT and help our sport of volleyball.

ADFA VOLLEYBALL CLUB REPORT

Objective: The ADFA Volleyball Club (VC) aims to promote volleyball at the Australian Defence Force Academy and in the ACT Defence community through regular competitions, social functions and affiliated events.

Preliminary Considerations: The ADFA Volleyball Club is governed by the Academy Sports Council and is subject to laws pertaining to the Australian Defence Force.

The ADFA Volleyball Club is comprised of Army and Air Force Officer Cadets, Navy Midshipmen, Advanced Students and Staff members of the Academy as well as other Defence personnel within the ACT region. In addition to this, the Club has some civilian members who have received special authorisation to play.

Committee: Supervising Officer: FLTLT Jude Chew (RAAF) President: Officer Cadet Katilyn O’Brien (RAAF) Vice President: Officer Cadet Matthew Holecek (RAAF) Treasurer: Officer Cadet Daniel Cuthill (ARA) Secretary: Midshipmen Raina Taggart (ARA) Social/ Fundraising Coordinator: Officer Cadet Megan Annetts (ARA)

Teams in VACT Competitions: Men’s 1st: State League Reserve Men Men’s 2nd: Open League Division 1 Men Women’s 1st: State League Reserve Women Women’s 2nd: Open League Division 1 Women

Training: Open League Trainings – Monday 1730 h to 1830 h at ADFA (Indoor sports centre) Reserve League Training – Monday 1830 h to 2030 h at RMC (Indoor sports centre) Optional Training – Thursday 1730 h to 1830 h at ADFA (Indoor sports centre)

Additional Comments The ADFAVC has suffered from a decline in player participation over the past couple of years. This is a problem that ADFA will have to deal with and this year looks to be more promising with a larger number registering over the last year.

The ADFAVC has some issues with the organisation of payment and player registration fees, in which we plan to work closely with Volleyball Australia to rectify issues. As with most defence organisations, it is difficult to organise the distribution of funds within a short amount of time. We appreciate the patience Volleyball ACT has shown in this area.

The length of the 2010 volleyball calendar is a concern to the Club. As the sport starts in March and ends in November, this spans close to 3/4 of the year. Very few other sports have playing seasons of this length, with most beginning in April and ending in September/October. As Volleyball is considered most Midshipman/Officer Cadets’ second or third priority sport, it is often a negative deciding factor for new players considering playing the sport.

Each year the ADFAVC sees the arrival of new members and the departure of 3rd year cadets. This creates constant fluctuation of club numbers and annual changes in the club committee. The posting of defence personnel also adds to this problem, losing players as well as coaches. At ADFA, volleyball is not the most popular sport and finds it difficult recruiting enough players for the start of seasons. We often find throughout the season that many people become unavailable due to injury or workload commitments. This means that season to season the amount of teams entered and level of entered competition by ADFA will change.

I hope to instil in the ADFAVC a greater sense of pride and commitment to our club. I noticed throughout last year that many players had a lacklustre attitude to volleyball games. This year looks to be one of change and improvement with budget constraints and extra player pressures leading to better management and governance.

Additional Comments: The community atmosphere developed over previous years at the ANUVC was built upon this year. The main social event of the year was the Volley‐Crawl around Civic with a World Cup Soccer theme. This was well attended and a very fun night. A huge thanks must go to Myf Evans and Elaine Cheung who organised the pub crawl. Similarly, the club's Annual Ball was a success in handing out the team awards and electing a new executive for 2011. Next year the club will strive to retain more people who sign up at the ANU Market Day, endeavour to enter teams in the University Games competition and work on strengthening the men’s side of the club again.

BELCONNEN VOLLEYBALL CLUB REPORT

Objective

To promote and increase participation in the sport of volleyball in the Belconnen region of the ACT.

2010 Committee

President: Nils Langford Vice‐President: Kian McNab Secretary: Joy Tyrrell Treasurer: Alex Rousak Member: Andre Borgeaud Member: John Sneddon Member: Daniel Tyrrell

2010 Season Overview

Belconnen Volleyball Club enjoyed another successful year in 2010, with the club continuing to grow and achieve good results in competition. The 2010 State League was not the most successful season by the standards of our club, yet a Belconnen team still featured in a medal match in every division, with our Reserve Men the standouts finishing with a silver medal.

We remain predominantly a junior club, and with a record 45 athletes and 7 coaches representing ACT junior teams in 2010, our future looks bright indeed. Our senior athletes also experienced considerable success in 2010, with 21 Belconnen players representing either the Canberra Heat or the Australian Institute of Sport in the Australian Volleyball League. Special mention must be made of our national representatives; Alex Sneddon, who vice‐captained the Australian Junior Women at the Asian Junior Championships in Vietnam; Jacques Borgeaud, who represented the Australian senior men’s team in the home series against Canada, as well as representing the Australian Junior Men at the Asian Junior

Championships in Thailand; and Joel Tyrrell, who represented the Australian senior men’s team at the Asia Cup in Iran, in various international friendlies across Europe and Argentina, and at the World Championships in Italy.

Our club continues to promote volleyball in the wider community, running a ‘Spikezone’ program for primary school children at Canberra High, conducting clinics at schools, and helping coach high school and college teams at the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup. Our club trainings at the AIS have also continued to expand, to the point where we are now searching for an alternative training venue to accommodate all our players.

None of this success would have been possible without the continued efforts of our Committee and our experienced coaching staff, and the club would like to thank them for their contributions. We would also like to thank our new sponsor, the Eastlake Football Club, who have recently acquired the Sports Club Kaleen and have pledged to continue to support all of Kaleen’s sponsored sporting clubs. Their generosity enables our club to reduce our fees and keep more people playing volleyball.

We would also like to thank Alex Vallentine and Steve Currie in the Volleyball ACT office for their efforts throughout the year. Volleyball in the ACT has come a long way in the last few years, and the success we are now experiencing at a national as well as a local level is due in no small part to these two committed and efficient administrators.

Finally, Belconnen Volleyball Club always welcomes new members of all ages and abilities who wish to be part of our fun and rewarding volleyball community!

Juniors Panthers coordinates a weekly Spikezone – Mini Volleyball session for primary school‐aged players at Active Leisure Centre, Erindale. The weekly sessions provide an introductory level for junior players incorporating skill practice and games. It is the largest and most successful Spikezone centre in Canberra with 3 to 6 teams participating each week. Panthers’ Spikezone also allows an opportunity for developing coaches to gain experience, with several senior players now assisting with coaching at Spikezone sessions.

Additionally, Panthers has worked together with VACT to deliver volleyball sessions as part of the Active After School Communities program. This program consists of Panthers volunteers coordinating and running one hour volleyball based sessions at Primary Schools across the Tuggeranong and Southside region. The program runs for 7 weeks of a school term and is booked by the after school program at these schools. This endeavour provides an opportunity for Primary School children to be introduced to volleyball in a friendly and comfortable environment, and hopefully lead to the future development of volleyball in the ACT.

In 2010 the Panther Cubs Academy has continued to grow. Weekly sessions, aimed at high school‐aged players, run from 5pm‐6:30pm on Fridays at Active Leisure Centre, Erindale. Player numbers have steadily improved throughout the year and female and male Panther Cubs teams have entered in the Volleyball ACT AUSpike series of tournaments. Panther Cubs is now beginning to establish links with local high schools to improve the standard of junior volleyball in the Tuggeranong area.

Senior teams Panthers entered a number of teams in senior competitions in 2010. Two women’s teams and one men’s team took part in both spring and autumn Open League competitions with encouraging results. Panthers also competed with 5 teams in the VACT State League, with Premier Men winning, and Premier Women (Red) claiming second place. Our senior team training sessions were impeded by a clash with Women’s Heat training through the State League season (even after Women’s AVL) meaning that our most senior women players were restricted from practicing with their club team mates. Regardless, senior teams trained under Coach Neil Boyes on Monday evenings at Southern Cross Stadium, Tuggeranong.

Australasian Volleyball Masters – Easter 2010 Tuggeranong Panthers Volleyball Club hosted the Easter Masters Championships in 2010 at Southern Cross Stadium. Planning for the event begun in November 2008 and an organising committee was formed in June 2009.

Generous sponsorship for the event was provided from the Tuggeranong Valley & Amateur Sports Club, MYOB Software and the National Zoo and Aquarium. Although team entries were slow coming in, the tournament went ahead with only 8 teams, some coming from Perth and New Zealand.

This was the 25th anniversary of the tournament and plans were made to celebrate this milestone appropriately through a commemorative t‐shirt and a memorabilia display and slide show at the tournament dinner.

The tournament itself ran very smoothly with every team playing 7 games over the 4 days with some very competitive volleyball put on display. Tournament officials did an excellent job and all games were played in the Masters spirit with no need for any dispute resolution.

Traditional functions were held at the Vikings Town Centre in Tuggeranong. With a smaller number of teams it meant that the events were more intimate with plenty of mixing between teams. The Championship dinner was one of the highlights of the weekend with great food, a nostalgic slide show, a record number of awards and a packed dance floor.

The finals day on the Monday was a fitting end to the tournament with all teams playing close games concluding with the medal presentations made by Panthers Volleyball board members.

Overall it was a successful tournament considering the reduced numbers. All participating teams have since congratulated Tuggeranong Panthers Volleyball Club on a well conducted and enjoyable championship event. This event would not have been possible without the efforts of the fantastic organising committee – Fiona Lyall, Bronwyn Evans, Joanne Maples, Pam Chilman, Wendy Macpherson, Jan Elliot and Bruce Hughes.

Additional Comments In 2010, Tuggeranong Panthers Volleyball Club held their inaugural Presentation Dinner. The night proved to be a successful night with up to 60 Panthers Volleyball players and their family. Awards were presented to the Most Valuable Player for all Panthers teams that competed in VACT’s competitions throughout 2010, Junior and Senior most improved players and the Most Valuable Panther. A big thank you goes to Erin Gillies for organising the event, and The Vikings Group, Vikings Town Centre and Gingers Catering for the room hire and meals.

Everything Panthers Volleyball has achieved in 2010 would not have been possible without the valuable support from our long‐term sponsor, The Tuggeranong Valley Rugby Union & Amateur Sports Club. This support allowed us to continue to subsidise our junior program and to continue our Panthers Cubs Junior Academy, as well as reduce training fees for all of our registered players.

In addition to this Panthers has received additional sponsorship from A1 Plaques. This sponsorship provided us with generous support that went towards the purchase of much needed playing shirts, the donation of trophies for our inaugural presentation dinner and the supply of Panthers signage to allow our club to be displayed at training sessions and games.

We at Panthers have continued to enjoy an excellent working relationship with Alex and Steve at VACT and their competitions organisation has been continually outstanding.

We acknowledge and thank all members of our club for their contribution, especially those on our board who have worked tirelessly to ensure the stable and successful club in 2010.

ACT Dragons Volleyball Club

ACT DRAGONS VOLLEYBALL CLUB REPORT

2010 was the ‘Year of the Dragons’. Winners of the VACT Club Championship and numerous University of Canberra Blues and Leadership Awards, including Sporting Club of the Year, the Dragons definitely roared in 2010.

Dragons Volleyball Club was established in late 2009 by a group of players, managers and coaches who wanted to establish a club that was inclusive, focused on developing people and nurturing talent, able to provide diverse opportunities in high performance, disability, junior, divisional and recreational volleyball, and based on principles of trust, friendship and good sportsmanship.

Membership and financials In 2010, Dragons grew from a core of about 20 member players and administrators to a membership of over 100. The club is proud to boast a diverse membership, which includes young and mature players, people with disability, international visitors and students, and members from a non‐English speaking background and Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.

The club is financially viable and secure through steady membership growth, the generous support of Foundation Members, in‐kind sponsorship and fundraising. Amalgamation with the former UC Devils Club and affiliation with the University of Canberra (UC) has helped stabilise the club and establish a supportive partnership with the UC student union body.

Governance The Dragons Volleyball Club is an incorporated association. In 2010 the management committee consisted of five executive members and five additional members, including a UC student representative. The club developed its business and financial plan in its first year.

Achievements Through the dedication and talent of players, coaches, administrators, managers and support people, Dragons won the VACT Club Championship in 2010.

The club also scooped the pool at the University of Canberra 2010 Blues and Leadership Awards: • Upstart Award: Best New Club • Sporting Club of the Year • Sporting Club Leadership Award: Robyn McCurdy • Lion Nathan Club Person of the Year: Robyn McCurdy

These achievements recognise the exceptional efforts of the club in sports performance, good organisation and in the dedicated and determined work of its Treasurer Robyn McCurdy.

Highlights of the club’s performance throughout the year include silver in Men’s Division 1 and 2 in the Autumn recreational season, gold for Men’s Reserve and 4th in Men’s Premier, Women’s Premier and Women’s Reserve in the VACT Cup, silver in Men’s Division 1, silver in Women’s Division 2 and bronze in the Open Division 3 in the Spring recreational season.

Our strongest successes were in the State League competition with the final results as follows: • Men’s Premier: Silver • Men’s Reserve (G): Gold • Men’s Reserve (S): Bronze • Women’s Premier: 4th • Women’s Reserve (G): Silver • Women’s Reserve (S): 5th

The club is proud of its high performance sports men and women and would like to congratulate Emma Walter (Canberra Heat Women), Pascal Schweitzer (Canberra Heat Men), Nathan Eikenbary (Canberra Heat Men) and Justin Pronin (ACT Under 19 Men) for their success in representing the ACT in volleyball. Justin received a small grant from the club through its Texas Hold’em Poker Fundraiser to help with his travel costs.

The club ran a highly successful tournament in April, the Devil’s Challenge, building on a long‐ standing tradition of the former UC Devils club. It was tremendous to see so many teams competing and helping our junior teams get some valuable practice in the lead up to the 2010 junior nationals in Perth.

Achievements are not just about winning games and getting sports awards. The club made some significant community contributions in its junior development program with Melba and Amaroo Primary Schools and in establishing D‐Volleyball in the ACT, a seated volleyball program, for abled and disabled players. The club aims to support and increase participation in the national D‐Volleyball program as well as provide an option for the local disabled community to participate in an internationally‐recognised Paralympic sport.

Finally, on behalf of the Dragons Volleyball Club, I would like to thank Peter McCurdy for his exceptional leadership and commitment to the club as its first President, the indomitable and tireless Robyn McCurdy who is the heart and soul of Dragons, our inaugural management committee who worked long hours and with unflagging enthusiasm to establish and run a brand new club, and to our Foundation Members who made sure that a bright idea stabilised and grew.

To our wonderful green and silver army of members and players who really played, coached and managed their hearts out, you guys made us the top club in 2010 – thank you!
