2017 Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club Limited Annual Report 2017 MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2017 MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2017 2 FOREWORD TO THE REPORT Welcome to the 2017 Annual Report of the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club Limited. As has been the case for many years, this Report has been produced in order to ensure the records from the season past are properly documented as part of our role in maintaining the heritage of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. By doing so we do not purport to represent the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Limited (the Sea Eagles) which is a separate legal entity from the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club Limited (the Football Club). The MWRLFC is a minority owner of the MWSE and the Board believes it is critical to maintain the history of the Club, including the documentation of statistics and individual player records. We regard the production of this Report as an important contribution to the Club as a whole. In 2017 we have continued to maintain the system of allocating a number to every player who has played a match in the first grade/NRL team. Whether it be one game or 300 games, they are given a unique, permanent number from the day they make their debut. As foreshadowed in the 2016 Report we are pleased that under the current management of the Football Department of the MWSE that each player now has their number on their gear. We would like to see this developed further in the future. Once again this Report has been compiled from publicly available data and our own records without cooperation from the MWSE. The production of the Report is done on a voluntary basis and the cost of printing the Report is funded by the Football Club and its members. We will continue to produce this Report as we view it as a valuable contribution to the history of our great Club. Overall it’s been a very positive year for the Sea Eagles family. While it didn’t begin well either on or off the field, the ongoing efforts of several people began to bear fruit as the season went on, topped of course by the magnificent and historic grand final win by the under 20’s side featured on the cover of our Report. At the start of the season none of the so-called experts rated our NRL team’s chances of making the top eight. But after a shaky first two games followed by a thumping defeat of the Cowboys in Townsville, the team began to produce some consistency and class led by new Captain Daly Cherry-Evans. There were some amazing late victories, including two golden point wins against the Canberra Raiders and one against the Warriors, which nearly had half of the northern beaches in the emergency ward, and a sensational second half come from behind win against the Roosters at Brookvale. After completely outclassing the fancied Panthers at Brookvale in the final game for the season, we returned to the finals after a two-year absence. Our loss to the Panthers in the first week of the finals was extremely disappointing and the circumstances that led to the loss more so, but all the signs are there for us to go further next year. Congratulations to DCE and the team and Coach Trent Barrett. We are excited to see what season 2018 will bring for the Sea Eagles. On a sadder note, 2017 also saw the official retirements of two more greats of the modern era – Brett Stewart (233 games) and Steve Matai (230), following Jamie Lyons’ retirement last year. “Snake” and “Skivy” are irreplaceable – both one club players who have given us many unforgettable moments and enormous success including two Premierships (2008 and 2011). On behalf of all members I wish them both all the very best health and happiness in retirement. I’d be happy for them to join my touch footy team anytime! It’s been another year of change for the Board of the Football Club. Earlier in the year long time Board member Chris Jones resigned. As well as being a passionate Sea Eagles supporter and Football Club member, Chris was responsible for setting up all our online systems and website and we thanks him for his service on behalf of the Football Club. We were however extremely happy that Chris’s vacant Board position was filled by former first grade player David O’Donnell. Dave debuted for the Club in 1989 and played 81 first grade games at hooker. Dave currently runs a successful business, and for many years has devoted his time to local junior rugby league at the Mona Vale Raiders. He brings new skills and experience to our Board. We are also farewelling fellow Director Bob Reilly. Bob was a founding Director of the post privatised Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club. Along with other founding Directors such as Philip Dean, Kerry Sibraa and Cathy Wagner, he fought hard to ensure the members of the original Football Club were able to keep their stake in the Sea Eagles within the new privatised structure. Fighting to protect the rights of the members and the Preference Share was not always easy and came at a high personal cost for Bob and his family. There can be no doubt Bob’s heart was always in the right place and we owe him thanks for all he has done for the Football Club and his unwavering support for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. Thanks Bob. Thanks also to my fellow Directors for their ongoing service to the Club and I wish all our members a safe and happy Christmas and 2018. GO MANLY! Cliff Lyons CHAIRMAN MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2017 5 NRL TEAM SEASON 2017 HEAD COACH’S REPORT - TRENT BARRETT 2017 saw our NRL side finish the regular season in sixth position, two wins out of the top four, a vast improvement from 2016. However we were most disappointed to bow out in week one of the Finals in a controversial loss to Penrith. Over the course of the year I witnessed the team and a lot of individuals take their games to a new level and grow as the rounds ticked over. At the halfway mark we sat in second position on the table and the team certainly started to believe we were heading in the right direction. Our captain Daly Cherry-Evans had his best and most consistent season for a few years, he was very un- lucky not to make the QLD Origin side and also narrowly missed out on the Dally M player of the year. His leadership in his first year as captain was outstanding. We had five players nominated for Dally M positional awards, with Dylan Walker taking out the centre of the year award, a great achievment. The continued development of the Trbojevic brothers, Addin Fonua Blake and Api Koroisau was evident, and the emergence of Brian Kelly, the resurrection of Curtis Sironen and Aku Uate gave me a lot of satisfaction.

  • 2012 Football Club Chairman’S Report
MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2012 FOOTBALL CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Going back to back in the NRL competition has proven too big a task for the defending Premiers each year since 1992, but I can proudly say that in 2012, Geoff Toovey and the boys gave it a red hot go. Despite a host of difficulties, including pre-season disruptions, travelling to the UK for the World Club Challenge, injuries, suspensions and off field distractions, the team, led by Co-Captains Jamie Lyon and Jason King, rallied together magnificently to finish in the Top 4, falling only one game short of another Grand Final appearance after defeat by eventual 2012 Premiers, the Melbourne Storm. Whilst we may not have achieved our ultimate goal of successfully defending our 2011 title, we should not lose sight of just how difficult it is to remain near the top of the NRL competition each year. Accordingly, we should all be extremely proud of what was still a very successful 2012 season for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. In his first year as Head Coach, Geoff Toovey did a fantastic job despite a less than ideal preparation and I am sure he is itching to get into 2013, knowing the experience of his first year under his belt will stand him in good stead for the challenges that lie ahead. With the nucleus of the side being retained long term, particularly our young halves, Keiran Foran and Daly Cherry-Evans, we can all be justifiably confident that a 9th premiership is well within our reach in coming seasons.

Of course the Kiwis take on Samoa on Saturday night at Mt Smart, and that one should be a good game too. League legend Olsen Filipaina is taking the ball out, which is pretty cool given he has represented the Kiwis and Samoa. The game I am looking forward to is the Kiwis v Tonga in Hamilton, because there is not going to be a lot of love lost when those two sides meet, after everything that has gone on. Before a ball is kicked I have the Kiwis lunch at the Ellerslie Events Centre to look forward to on Friday. When Pete asked if I would take it on with Gordon Gibbons and Tony Feasey, I foolishly said yes, not want- ing to let Pete down. But in truth Gordon has been amazing and we have an incredible line-up of Kiwis greats taking to the stage, and players with a long history of World Cup and test glory in attendance. I have been to several of Peter’s Kiwis lunches and enjoyed every one of them.
