  • ON the TAKE T O N Y J O E L a N D M at H E W T U R N E R
Scandals in sport AN ACCOMPANIMENT TO ON THE TAKE TONY JOEL AND MATHEW TURNER Contemporary Histories Research Group, Deakin University February 2020 he events that enveloped the Victorian Football League (VFL) generally and the Carlton Football Club especially in September 1910 were not unprecedented. Gambling was entrenched in TMelbourne’s sporting landscape and rumours about footballers “playing dead” to fix the results of certain matches had swirled around the city’s ovals, pubs, and back streets for decades. On occasion, firmer allegations had even forced authorities into conducting formal inquiries. The Carlton bribery scandal, then, was not the first or only time when footballers were interrogated by officials from either their club or governing body over corruption charges. It was the most sensational case, however, and not only because of the guilty verdicts and harsh punishments handed down. As our new book On The Take reveals in intricate detail, it was a particularly controversial episode due to such a prominent figure as Carlton’s triple premiership hero Alex “Bongo” Lang being implicated as the scandal’s chief protagonist. Indeed, there is something captivating about scandals involving professional athletes and our fascination is only amplified when champions are embroiled, and long bans are sanctioned. As a by-product of modernity’s cult of celebrity, it is not uncommon for high-profile sportspeople to find themselves exposed by unlawful, immoral, or simply ill-advised behaviour whether it be directly related to their sporting performances or instead concerning their personal lives. Most cases can be categorised as somehow relating to either sex, illegal or criminal activity, violence, various forms of cheating (with drugs/doping so prevalent it can be considered a separate category), prohibited gambling and match-fixing.

Sir Peter Leitch Club Newsletter RLWC 2017 5th October 2017 Only 3 weeks until the first game! #190b C’mon the Kiwis By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan O POINT beating around the bush, and yes I have heard all about Jason Taumalolo, David Fusitu’a and NManu Ma’u, but the Kiwis are my team and you have to get on with it, so onwards and upwards. It’s not like the Aussies aren’t suffering the same thing, with Andrew Fifita opting for Tonga ahead of the Kan- garoos. As I drove home last night Radio Sport was going off, with all sorts of opinions about the North Queensland Cowboy’s decision to play for Tonga ahead of the Kiwis, and then of course with Thursday’s defections, many are arguing the Kiwis are a shambles. Well if they are, they are my shambles, and come October when the ball gets kicked off at Mt Smart I will still be in the stand, and I will still be cheering for the boys. I have had the pleasure of meeting our coach David Kidwell many times, and he is a great bloke, but simpler than that, he is the coach and I will back him to do the best job he can. There are still some real positives for me in the Kiwis side. Simon Mannering is named, and there had been plenty of talk that he would not make it, with the Kiwis opt- ing for a rapid-fire game that might not suit his style.

THE ACTION KICKS OFF THIS SATURDAY NIGHT Sir Peter Leitch Club Newsletter RLWC 2017 24th October 2017 It’s 4 days until the Kiwis play # their first game of the 2017 RLWC 193 Back The Kiwis By Enjoying Lunch By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan E ARE only days from the kick-off of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, with Australia and England W– in what will be a hell of a match - doing the honours on Friday night. Of course the Kiwis take on Samoa on Saturday night at Mt Smart, and that one should be a good game too. League legend Olsen Filipaina is taking the ball out, which is pretty cool given he has represented the Kiwis and Samoa. The game I am looking forward to is the Kiwis v Tonga in Hamilton, because there is not going to be a lot of love lost when those two sides meet, after everything that has gone on. Before a ball is kicked I have the Kiwis lunch at the Ellerslie Events Centre to look forward to on Friday. When Pete asked if I would take it on with Gordon Gibbons and Tony Feasey, I foolishly said yes, not want- ing to let Pete down. But in truth Gordon has been amazing and we have an incredible line-up of Kiwis greats taking to the stage, and players with a long history of World Cup and test glory in attendance. I have been to several of Peter’s Kiwis lunches and enjoyed every one of them.

  • Rugby, Media and the Americans!
RUGBY, MEDIA AND THE AMERICANS! THE IMPACT ON AUSTRALIAN RUGBY INTRODUCTION For most of its history, rugby was a strictly amateur football code, and the sport's administrators frequently imposed bans and restrictions on players who they viewed as professional. It was not until 1995 that rugby union was declared an "open" game, and thus professionalism was sanctioned by the code's governing body,’ World Rugby’.1 To some, this represented an undesirable and problematic challenge to the status quo in which the traditions of the game would be eroded and benefits would accrue only to a small coterie of talented players. To many others the change was inevitable and overdue. In various countries different combinations of veiled professionalism or officially condoned shamateurism that lurked behind the amateur facade throughout the twentieth century. For instance, it was well known amongst New Zealand rugby players, or at least this author, that their fellow Auckland provincial rugby representatives were remunerated handsomely behind closed doors through the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. This effectively allowed them to train as semi professionals that, it could be argued, aided the run of success Auckland enjoyed through the same period as the National Provincial Champions (NPC). The statistics reflect that in 61 challenges in the period from 1985 to 1993, Auckland were undefeated. The team itself was full of All Blacks that won six titles in the 1990s. Playing for Auckland could be considered as close as it got to being a full time professional in this era.2 An alternative for frustrated rugby players was either to swap 1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_football 2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auckland_rugby_union_team codes and join the rugby league profession either in Australia or Europe or play rugby in another country, again being paid ‘under the table’.
