2 www.footballaustralia.com.au 2012 FFA National Futsal Championships

On behalf of the Board and management of Football Federation Australia (FFA) I would like to welcome all players, officials and spectators to the 2012 FFA National Futsal Championships.

These National Championships are our biggest national tournament competition and have a long history in showcasing our nation’s best Futsal talent for boys and girls, men and women.

With Futsal being one of the growth areas within FFA, we acknowledge the efforts of all our Member Federations who actively work to provide opportunities for all players, coaches and referees within their care.

FFA in turn provides opportunities for elite Futsal players under our National Football Curriculum through the National Talented Player Pathway to allow players to truly reach their potential. Since our admission into the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in 2006, the number of opportunities for international Futsal competition has increased markedly with regular club and national team fixtures in the AFC competition calendar.

Indeed this year’s nationals will be of great importance to the Australian Men’s National Futsal team coach, Steven Knight, who will be using the Championships as part of his selection process for the upcoming ASEAN Futsal Championships which will be played in late next month. These championships serve as the qualification tournament for the 2012 AFC Futsal Championships, hosted by the United Arab Emirates in May, which is the qualifier for the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup which will played in November in Thailand.

It also gives me great pleasure to announce that for the first time, the FFA National Futsal will be proudly supported by the Australian Government’s, llicit Drugs in Sport Education Program. As part of this support, Alcohol and Illicit Drug Education workshops will be held for players during the tournament.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our commercial partners Qantas, Nike, Westfield, Hyundai, SOLO, NAB, the Australian Sports Commission, Fox Sports and Optus for their support. I would also like to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of Capital Football for, once again, hosting this event.

Finally, best wishes to all players, coaches and match officials for the coming week. I trust that the tournament is highly competitive, entertaining and successful and played within the spirit of fair play and respect for all.

Ben Buckley Chief Executive Officer Football Federation Australia

Tournament Overview

Once again the FFA Futsal National Championships hit Canberra as the courts of the Nation’s Capital prepare for battle to see who will emerge as the best of the best and claim the title for 2012. The prestigious accolades bestowed on the winners of the FFA Futsal National Championship see a week long display of stunning skills, sweeping action and goals, goals, goals in front of large and appreciative crowds who are drawn to a game that rewards innovation, technique and risk taking.

As usual the home-town ACT will be amongst the favourites to claim honours along with the powerhouse New South Wales Thunder and Lightning. But, as has been shown in recent years, challengers can emerge from anywhere with Victoria reaching their first men’s final for many a year and Tasmania posting some excellent results along the way. There is no reason to expect this edition of the premier national indoor championships to be any different.

2012 will be a huge year for the game of Futsal with the seventh Futsal World Cup scheduled in Thailand from November 2-18 with the Final due to take place in the 15,000 capacity Hua Mark Stadium in Bangkok. Twenty-four teams will compete for the right to be crowned World Champions in what will be a showcase for the sport. Before that of course is the small matter of qualification and the AFC Futsal Championship, from which the Asian representatives will be drawn, will be held between May 12-22 in the United Arab Emirates. So there is plenty of action to be seen for aficionados of the indoor game.

The growth of Futsal Worldwide continues apace with the many benefits associated with the game beginning to be recognised by the pre-eminent coaches of our era. With the small court and lack of walls, players are constantly placed in demanding decision-making situations, requiring quick thinking, good ball control, precise passing, and creative solutions with the rules of the game favouring the more skilful players ahead of the physical aspects which tend to dominate in the outdoor version of the game.

The smaller teams, five-a-side, allows players to get more frequent touches on the ball and more opportunities to score goals improving control, vision and distribution, some of the core factors required in building the complete footballer. Perhaps more importantly than all of the added skill-factors that can be improved through regular exposure to the game is the simple fact that playing Futsal is fun! Throughout the FFA Futsal National Championships you’ll see players straining to make that vital tackle, interception or score the crucial goal, but they will more often than not do it with a smile on their face.

That’s not to say that the level of commitment will be anything other than 100% from all the competing players. Tackles will be firm and defensive patterns well-organized and you can almost guarantee that the teams will fight tooth and nail until the final blast of the referee’s whistle in order to win the game. Be prepared from some fierce contests throughout!

And so the scene is once more set. Canberra has prepared and the courts are ready. The eerie silence that descends across an empty AIS Arena, AIS Training Hall, Southern Cross Club Centre and other venues around our great Capital are soon to be shattered and will be replaced by the roar of the action and the thrill of the moment as the 2012 FFA Futsal National Championships gets underway.

DRAWS AND RESULTS Keep up to date with all the latest results and ladders throughout the 2012 FFA Futsal National Championships by logging on to the Official website at www.futsalnationals.com.au. Results will be updated daily and news reports will be featured prominently.

The 2011 FFA Futsal national Champions ended with quite some finale as NSW Thunder defeated Victoria in a dramatic penalty shoot-out to claim the Men’s Open crown after an epic struggle. The scintillating final that had the almost capacity crowd on the edge of its seats throughout was a fitting way to culminate a weeklong event that, once again, showed the best that Futsal can offer to an appreciative public.

A penalty miss from Victorian Ahmed Azzam ultimately proved the difference in the Open Men’s Final. Azzam saw his penalty pushed onto the post by Thunder goalkeeper Gavin O’Brien as the Sky Blues erupted. Earlier in the match Simon Keith had slotted in off the post in the 19th minute to give Thunder the lead only for Victoria to hit back and equalise with three minutes remaining after Fernando De Moraes fed an exquisite pass to Ernie Simsek to slot home. And it seemed as though Victoria would claim the glory when De Moraes scored with two minutes to play only for Shervin Adeli to clip in a sensational last minute leveller to send the game to spot-kicks and the Thunder to ultimate triumph. Adam Husseni of Tasmania was selected as the Open Men’s tournament MVP for a series of excellent displays for his state. Meanwhile, a thumping strike from Renee Tomkins sealed the Open Women’s title for the NSW Thunder as the Sky Blues continued to rack up the titles on Grand Final day eventually ending with twelve of the seventeen crowns available. Tomkins smashed in the winner from distance to settle a staid tie that was lacking in inspiration but was a tactical battle to the extreme. The Cobras went close to an equaliser but the Thunder deserved their narrow win with Natasha Lo Guidice in outstanding form. Lauren Diduszko of Western NSW was named MVP of the Open Women’s competition.

It was Thunder all the way in the Youth competitions as the powerhouse state claimed victory in both Youth Men and Youth Women at the expense of the locals from the ACT. NSW Thunder claimed the 2011 Youth Men championships by capitalising on a couple of mistakes by the home town Cobras. Twice the Cobras turned over cheap possession inside their own half and Jarrod Basger was on hand to slide home two excellent finishes to put his team in full control. Timothy Denne pulled one back for the Cobras with a shot that Thunder goalkeeper Alastair Bruce should have done better with, but the Thunder were deserving winners on the day. ACT Cobras player Ryan Keir was named tournament MVP with team mate Glenn Smith claiming the Golden Boot award. It was a similar tale in the Youth Women where a sublime goal by Doris Osman gave the NSW Thunder the platform to take home the final with a 2-0 win over the ACT Cobras. Osman was on the end of a slick move to fire home from close range and give the Thunder the priceless advantage in the first half. A second goal, after the break from Helen Petinos, slamming a left foot effort high into the net completed the Thunder win with the ACT going close on a couple of occasions with Catherine Brown hitting the woodwork. Elise O’Kelly of NSW Lightning was named tournament MVP with the Thunder’s Doris Osman, a goal poacher of some repute, the leading goal scorer.

As has been the norm for the majority of the FFA Futsal national Championships, it was the NSW Thunder who dominated proceedings in the Junior sections. However there were some instances where not everything went the way of the usual tournament favourites. The NSW Lightning provided an upset with a 2-0 win over the Thunder in the Boy’s under-16 competition with goals from Luke Clifford and Nathan Clissold to end a competitive event. The Lightning looked in excellent form for the match and played some wonderful futsal keeping possession and pouncing at the right times to deny their stable mates. In something of a consolation to the beaten team Daniel Vellonio of NSW Thunder completed a memorable week by winning the tournament MVP. And, as if to prove that the boy’s effort was no fluke, earlier in the day NSW Lightning broke the NSW Thunder monopoly with a fine 2-0 win in the Girls under-16 competition. In one of the fiercest matches of the week nothing could separate the teams at the interval after a goalless first period. That’s not to say there weren’t chances, but both goalkeepers were determined to keep a clean sheet. It took something special to break the deadlock when Katherine Hawker lashed in a long-range drive that flew into the top corner for the opener. The next goal was always likely to be crucial and it was the Lightning who got it when Montana Bolzan struck. Lightning’s Patricia Charalamboas was named player of the match while Western NSW player Chloe Robinson was elected as the tournament MVP for 2011.

8 www.footballaustralia.com.au 2012 FFA National Futsal Championships

A quite brilliant Athlete’s with Disability tournament concluded with a great Grand Final in front of a large crowd at the AIS Arena. Southern NSW, who had been one of the standout teams of an extremely hard- fought pool stages, were crowned champions after winning 6-1 against NSW Lightning. Nathan Whaylon struck a hat-trick of goals and was in super form as were fellow goal scorers Mitchell Forrest, Caitlin Cooney and John Ruiz. Rodney Afif of NSW Lighting was named player of the match for his hard work in adversity putting in some tremendous tackles and bursting with energy throughout the forty minutes. His performance was crowned with a lovely goal as well.

Queensland’s sole representative on Grand Final Day, the Girl’s under-15 team was unable to end the week as champions, falling at the final hurdle to NSW Thunder. The Thunder, whose Futsal program is obviously in rude health considering the amount of titles gained, added this one to their burgeoning collection on the back of a solid team showing orchestrated by player of the match Lucy Chapman. The match was delicately poised at 1-1 at the interval with the Thunder eventually pulling away in the second half to take the match 3-1. Jessica Elliott, Rebecca Dennis and Vanisha Kumar scored for the Thunder with Jessica Dillon on target for Queensland who battled hard but was ultimately undone at the very end of an emotional week for all involved. The MVP at under-15 Girls level was Candela Bas of Victoria. And Blue continued to be the dominant theme NSW Thunder continued their sensational championships with a 6-2 triumph over fellow NSW side, the Lightning in the Boy’s under-15 Final. Daniel Collins was the shining light for the Thunder scoring a and having a hand in another that was credited as a Lightning own goal. Shannon Fielding and Petros Stefadouros added goals to Collins’ effort, but it was a real all round team performance from the sky blues. The Lightning had their own two-goal hero in Daniel Graham whilst Chris Howell battled hard for the cause. Queensland’s Kayden Oakes was voted as the MVP of the under-15 Boys championship having won the under-14 award in 2010.

Player of the match, The Thunder’s captain Erin Hill, was outstanding in leading her team to a 6-2 victory over ACT Cobras in the Girls under-14, driving forward at every opportunity and presenting a firm barrier whenever the ACT threatened. The bedrock provided by Hill was gleefully built upon by Lisa Meduri and Amy Dahdali, who both scored twice, whilst Alysse Tasevski and Zoe Gomez both added their names to the score sheet. The Cobras did provide some sparks of excellence and were rewarded by goals from Olivia Gurney and Emma Bestek, but the Thunder were too powerful to deny. Jordan Baker of Western NSW took out the MVP award as player of the tournament. A four-goal haul from man of the match Shaun Irwin was the highlight of NSW Thunder’s 8-1 Grand Final thumping of Victoria in the boy’s under-14 age group. Irwin was simply sensational as he bagged a personal milestone that led his team to the title. The impressive Irwin led by example with his goals but he wasn’t alone in impressing the crowd. Kristopher Vlismas added two to the total whilst Robert Perre and Alexander Vlismas completed Thunder’s eight goal haul. The Thunder led 3-0 in at half-time and pulled away in the second half. Victoria managed a brilliant goal of their own from Erhan Yalaz who executed a superb trap and volley into the top corner but it was scant consolation to his team.

A double from Ruby Mosca and a single from Caitlin Murphy were enough for the thunder to claim the Girls under-13 title with a 3-0 win over the ACT Cobras whilst in the boy’s competition Victoria were crowned champions with a narrow 2-1 win over crowd favourites the . These two teams had been the standout of the competition throughout the week scoring a stack of goals and displaying some breathtaking skills to delight the enthralled crowds that have witnessed them play. And this final was no exception. All the goals came in the first half with the Solomon Islands taking the lead through Fred Kalimae before Victoria struck back via goals from Damian Rastocic and Joshua Markovski to win 2-1. At under-12 level the Thunder were simply supreme winning the Girls event by dispatching Victoria 7-2 in the Grand Final, with Hannah Bacon and Georgia Plessas scoring a brace each, whilst Jordan Pyne scored a double of his own as Thunder beat Lightning 4-3 in a thrilling Boy’s under-12 Final. Grand Final day had commenced with the Thunder setting their stall out for the day by winning the under-11 Girls competition with a 4-2 win over Victoria with tournament MVP Princess Ibini-Isei scoring twice. And, in the Boy’s under-11 Final Ahmed Mohammadi went one better with a hat- trick as Auckland Rio emerged victorious from a cracking match with the ACT Cobras winning 4-2, a result that started a wonderful day of futsal. Roll on 2012 and it’s own extravaganza!

www.footballaustralia.com.au 9 2012 FFA National Futsal Championships BOOMERANGS FS SHOW LOCAL CLASS

Whilst the FFA Futsal National Championships provides the pinnacle for state representation there is a flourishing local club scene in the ACT as well. Season 2011/12 saw the second year of the local Futsal Premier League competitions and the implementation of the Junior Futsal Premier League as the impact of the indoor sport continued to group. Perhaps the best example of how the sport in the ACT has developed over the years has been the Boomerangs FS club.

Boomerangs FS, who currently field squads in the NSW Premier League, was the initiative of two passionate local Canberra Futsal people, Kristian Collins and Eddie Senatore. The idea behind the club was to offer players, aged 9 to open, from the ACT the opportunity to play in what is widely regarded as the best Futsal League in Australia in New South Wales. The hope being that players exposed to that level of competition will be better equipped to handle the National Championships.

The Boomerangs started life in the NSW Super League only two years ago with their rapid ascension to the top level a glowing endorsement of the brand underpinned by Senatore and Collins. Collins explained that promotion came somewhat early for the club. “The plan was originally to aim for promotion in our fourth season after what would have been three years of development and training,” Collins admitted. “However midway through the 2009/10 season it became apparent that promotion was a viable outcome. The team continued to play some fantastic Futsal and the results came our way and promotion was secured. We believe that the NSW Premier League is the most competitive league in Australia and for our club to be in that type of environment in just our third year is a fantastic achievement for our players, parents and coaching staff.”

The promotion has certainly paid dividends for the Boomerangs in terms of recruiting new players which in turn has made the standard of Futsal in the ACT improve. According to Collins further exposure to this level can only benefit the game in the region in the future. “The NSW Premier League is like playing in the Futsal Nationals on weekly basis,” Collins commented. “Being exposed to the best players in the country can only benefit our playing stocks in the ACT. But this initiative also benefits our coaches and referees who are also exposed to the best in their respective fields. The Boomerangs main goal is the development of players and this can only be seen as a benefit for the ACT representative teams in turn. Each week you can see the players developing, learning new things and that’s great not only for the players involved but also for the players who our players play with and against locally who will learn from the Boomerangs players’ experiences.”

Such has been the success of the Boomerangs throughout the season that amazingly ninety-five players from the club will kit up for the ACT in the FFA Futsal National Championships with plenty of outstanding players on show across all the age groups (see sidebar). As such you could possibly forgive the Boomerangs administration for resting on their laurels. Not a bit of it however. In the pipeline for the future are possible overseas tours, development academies and even national status in an Australian wide competition. And while this may seem to be a tough task to achieve few would bet against the resourceful Boomerangs to succeed.

“Every single person that has been involved with the club so far deserves some recognition for where we are right now,” Collins said. “It has been a pleasure watching the younger players develop and the parents get excited over the last three seasons. Hopefully that doesn’t end here and we can push on and keep the upward trend that we have seen so far.”

10 www.footballaustralia.com.au 2012 FFA National Futsal Championships NEW SOUTH WALES SUCCESS STORY

It will be all systems go in January as Football NSW’s selected Futsal state squads lock horns in the FFA National Futsal Championships held in the nation’s capital Canberra. Football NSW Futsal has seen a number of successful teams and players take charge in a number of key championship victories against rival state squads across both male and female age groups throughout the years. The underlying message again to all participating representative teams from Football NSW is to continue the winning tradition.

The motto coming out of Football NSW headquarters yearly is “We’re Blue and we’re proud” which will surely be visible at the AIS courts in January. Winning titles has been synonymous to the hard work and efforts being put together by all coaches and players from Football NSW’s representative teams and 2012 will be no different.

What has pushed Football NSW’s Futsal squads to the limit has been the success of the Futsal Premier and Super League competitions which have been running for a six solid seasons.

Known as being arguably the best Futsal club competitions in Australia, a huge total of 2,000 elite players in both junior and senior age groups continue to play at a high level week in week out against talented opponents on a regular basis during the summer season. It is here where the environment of hosting Australia’s best futsal players takes centre stage in furthering their skills as potential Qantas Futsalroos stars.

On-top of the two thousand registered players, a further 10,000 futsal players are registered playing local competitions spreading the good word that is futsal across NSW. In regards to the National titles, Football NSW will be sending its biggest and best contingent to Canberra fielding two teams in each category as well as having teams from both Southern and Western NSW take part. On the subject of Western, the region is developing nicely with the inaugural Western Futsal League competition taking place for the 12, 14 and 16 boys and girls.

Overall, Football NSW will be sending thirty-four teams as well as three AWD squads to Canberra in 2012 with Southern NSW sending eight teams and Western NSW seven. A number of current Futsalroos have developed through the futsal ranks of NSW and with a new breed of up and coming youngsters from both genders coming through, the future certainly looks bright for the sport of futsal in NSW.

What must be noted also is that the inaugural F-League competition kicked off in May this year which was run by Football NSW and endorsed by the FFA – The F-League aims to become the most professional futsal competition in and ultimately Australia and proved to be rather successful as teams from the ACT and Victoria took part against squads from NSW in seeing just who is the best team in Australian futsal. The F-League gives Australia’s best futsal players the opportunity to play the sport all year round providing serious competition for any player wishing to compete at the highest level in the coveted sport. It is hope the introduction of the F-League will increase to profile of , with a women’s version planned for 2012 the sport is on the rise.

ATHLETES WITH DISABILITY AT THE FFA FUTSAL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2012 FFA National Futsal Championships sees the return of the Athletes with Disability (AWD) mixed Futsal National competition with six teams from across the country taking to the courts for the tournament. ACT Cobras, NSW Lightning, NSW Thunder, Southern NSW, Victoria and Western NSW have entered what should be inspirational viewing for sports fans, and Futsal supporters, in particular. Futsal for players with an intellectual disability made its International debut at the 1992 Madrid Paralympics. Through the 1990s it was also very successful at state and national level in Australia. With plans to extend the competition to include teams from South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory and Western Australia in the future. With ongoing development and with a successful National Championships in January, there is potential for players to experience International competition later in the year. Make sure you catch all the AWD action whilst in Canberra! Action is based mainly at the Mpowerdome in Tuggeranong.

2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup

Bangkok, Thailand will be alive with the sounds of Futsal action in November this year when it hosts the seventh FIFA Futsal World Cup from November 2-18 with the Final due to take place in the 15,000 capacity Hua Mark Stadium.

The tournament is held every four years, on the even year between two FIFA World Cups with the first event held in 1989, the year FIFA became the world governing body of futsal. It was held in the to commemorate the popularity of the game there with the hosts falling in the Final to 2-1. Through to the 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup, only two countries have taken the Futsal World Cup. Brazil winning the first three, defeating the host Spaniards in 1996 to win their third title (6-4), followed by winning the next two, defeating Brazil in 2000 (4-3), then Italy in 2004 (2-1) in the first Futsal World Championship final that didn’t feature Brazil. In 2008 Brazil became the first host country to win the Championship beating Spain in a penalty shoot out after an exhilarating match had ended in a 2-2 draw.

As hosts Thailand have already qualified for the tournament and have been joined by the Solomon Islands who won the Oceania Qualification Group played last year. It’s worth noting that the Solomon Islands, who regularly send participating teams into the FFA Futsal National Championships in the lower age-grades, have won the last four Oceania titles, dominating the region since Australia left to join the AFC in 2006. Prior to that it was the Qantas Futsalroos who were the powerhouse in the area winning four titles in succession in 1992, 1996, 1999 and 2004 with the latter title being achieved in Canberra no less as the team accounted for New Zealand, Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa and the Solomon Islands.

Qualification for the event itself is getting tougher and tougher with the amount of teams entered growing year on year. For the Qantas Futsalroos the journey to the FIFA Futsal World Cup is a long and arduous one. Their first step on the road to the finals is the ASEAN Zone qualifiers which were scheduled for Bangkok, Thailand on 26th November to 1st December but which were forced to be postponed until the 21-26 February 2012 due to the floods that ravaged Thailand in recent times. The Futsalroos have been drawn in Group B and will face Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia with the hosts, Myanmar, Philippines and Indonesia in the other grouping. The winners qualify for the 2012 AFC Championships to be held in the United Arab Emirates between 12-22 May this year.

Already ten of the twelve places in the 2012 AFC Championships have been decided with the hosts UAE joined by China, Japan, Iran, Chinese Taipei, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in what is sure to be a tough competition. There are bound to be plenty of twists and turns before that though with the FFA National Futsal Championships providing the perfect setting for the international aspirants to strut their stuff in front of the national selectors.
